Papers hurled at Amit Shah, MPs stage protests in Lok Sabha

The Lok Sabha on Wednesday witnessed vigorous protests by the Opposition that nearly led to a scuffle between government ministers and senior Opposition leaders prompted the entry of 15 marshals, and forced Union home minister Amit Shah to change his seat during the introduction of three bills that seek to bar ministers, chief ministers or the Prime Minister from holding office after being arrested for serious crimes. When Shah tried to introduce the 130th constitution amendment bill and two other related bills at 2pm, a number of Opposition MPs, especially from Trinamool Congress (TMC), rushed to the Well to protest against the proposed law, even as a verbal duel started between the minister and some Opposition leaders over the merit of the bill. Soon, things took a turn for the worse.
Congress leader KC Venugopal tore apart a copy of the bill as he accused the government of trying to target the Opposition. TMC's Kalyan Banerjee, who was standing in front of Shah, turned around and tried to use the home minister's microphone to oppose the bill.
Soon, a few other TMC MPs came close to Shah and started throwing papers in front of the minister. Parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju, who was seated on the second row, rushed to stand between the protestors and Shah. Minister of state Ravneet Singh Bittu also came running down. Bittu later told HT that the Opposition committed a shameful act and even blamed the 'infighting' in the TMC for the aggravated situation that saw different leaders of TMC protesting in their own way.
Bittu said, 'I rushed because I feared they might harm our home minister.' The TMC later alleged that some of the women MPs were 'assaulted' by Rijiju and Bittu. 'MP Mitali Bag confirmed this to the media. Also, Satabdi Roy was pushed and heckled,' a leader aware of the matter said. The Bharatiya Janata Party refuted these allegations.
At 3 pm, when the House reassembled after an adjournment, Shah sat in the fourth row and introduced the bill amid another round of protests. At least 15 marshals also came inside the House and as soon as the protests restarted, they rushed to the well to protect the treasury bench. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla sent them back as the Opposition raised objections over their deployment.
The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, said, 'There is a lot of action going on about the new bill that the BJP is proposing. We are going back to medieval times when the king could just remove anybody at will. There's no concept of what an elected person is. He doesn't like your face, so he tells ED to put a case, and then a democratically elected person is wiped out within 30 days.'
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee said, 'I condemn the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill, proposed to be tabled, by the Government of India today. I condemn it as a step towards something that is more than a super- Emergency, a step to end the democratic era of India for ever. This draconian step comes as a death knell for democracy and federalism in India.'
TMC's Mahua Moitra took jibes at Shah for sitting in a middle row. 'India watched how Amit Shah did not have courage to sit in his own seat to bring in his Unconstitutional Amendment. Even with 20 extra marshals protecting him, he cowardly sat in fourth row!'
To be sure, when the Women's Reservation Bill was first introduced in the Rajya Sabha in 2010, similar protests had erupted in the Upper House. It is not the first time that a minister sat in a middle row to table a contentious bill to avoid any harm or escalation of protests.

A new V-P candidate, some bills, some protests: a day in Parliament

The Rajya Sabha may soon have its new Chair. The INDIA bloc has picked former Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy as the Opposition candidate for the Vice-Presidential election, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge announced on Tuesday (August 19, 2025). Mr. Reddy has previously also been a judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court and Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court. Facing him is the NDA's pick, Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan, a two-time former MP from Coimbatore and a former Tamil Nadu BJP president. His name was announced on Sunday (August 17), after an endorsement by the BJP Parliamentary Board. Apart from this, Parliamentary proceedings on Tuesday followed a now familiar routine: protests by Opposition members over the special intensive revision of Bihar's electoral rolls, and the quick passing of bills with very little discussion. The Rajya Sabha cleared the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2025, with Union Minister of Mines Kishan Reddy saying in his reply that the process for coal allocation and the working of the Mines Ministry have come a long way since 2014, after Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power. He detailed corruption in coal allocation during the previous UPA government, citing reports from the Comptroller Auditor-General (CAG) and Supreme Court judgements. He also highlighted an increase in private sector participation and ease of doing business, as well as a boost in production which saw India crossing the one billion tonne-mark for the first time. Meanwhile, the Lok Sabha passed the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which seeks to establish a new IIM in Guwahati. The House also resumed its special discussion on the first Indian abroad the International Space Station and India's space mission, even as protests continued to roil the House. BJP MP Nishikant Dubey said that Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla was not a BJP person, and that he represented the nation's 140 crore people as India's first astronaut abroad the ISS. He says he thought that Opposition would support PM Modi and show the world unity as far as space, defence, development and Viksit Bharat was concerned. He linked the Opposition's current stance of protest to its previous actions pertaining to ISRO and the space mission, noting the 1994 arrest of noted scientist Nambi Narayanan on suspicions of espionage and saying that the then Congress government had colluded with China, Russia, US and Soros. He read out a section from a Supreme Court judgement directing Mr. Narayanan's release, which referred to the 'immense physical humiliation' and abuse suffered by a scientist of national repute. He also brought up a CAG report from 2012 which detailed corruption of more than Rs. 200 crore in the space sector. His speech was hindered by protests in the House, and proceedings soon adjourned. Today, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is likely to introduce three new Bills in Lok Sabha which provide a legal framework for the removal of the Prime Minister, Union Ministers, Chief Ministers and Ministers in States and union territories who are 'arrested and detained in custody on account of serious criminal charges.' Also on the anvil is the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025. We keep an eye on proceedings in both House of Parliament today as well. Follow along here. Until next time.

(PTI Photo) NEW DELHI: In a show of solidarity, Congress and TMC leaders accompanied the opposition's Vice Presidential candidate former Supreme Court judge B Sudarshan Reddy to the residence of AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal who assured his party's full support. Though AAP has disengaged from the bloc it joins hands with INDIA bloc members on issues where it deems fit and Sanjay Singh from the party was present when Reddy filed his nomination in the presence of top opposition leaders earlier in the day. AAP has three MPs in Lok Sabha and out of its 10 MP posts in Rajya Sabha currently it has nine MPs including the estranged Swati Maliwal. One seat fell vacant after MP Sanjeev Arora won the Ludhiana West assembly bypoll in June. Congress's Pramod Tiwari and Syed Naseer Hussain and TMC's Kalyan Banerjee were present at the meeting at Kejriwal's residence. "Justice Reddy's judicial career is very impressive. He gave many unbiased judgments in favour of the country. I request everyone to vote for him, keeping party affiliations aside," Kejriwal said. Noting that Justice Reddy is from Andhra Pradesh where NDA ally TDP is in power, Kejriwal said 'we expect parties from AP and Telangana to rise above partisan politics and vote for Telugu pride and national interest. ' With 781 members in the electoral college and 391 required for a majority, the ruling alliance has a clear numerical advantage.

Trinamool raises questions over Dhankhar's absence, CPI writes him a letter

Jagdeep Dhankhar NEW DELHI: Exactly a month after he resigned, on the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament, Trinamool Congress raised the issue of former vice president Jagdeep Dhankhar's disappearance from public life, and Communist Party of India wrote to Dhankhar expressing grave concern over his sudden resignation and his silence and withdrawal from the public domain since then. On Wednesday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had raised similar concerns as he asked, 'where has the old VP gone?' As the Parliament session came to an end on Thursday, TMC's Derek O' Brien reflected on the state of affairs under the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre. 'No byte, no video, no trace...,' he said referring to Dhankhar's disappearance since Aug 21 evening, when he submitted his resignation, citing health reasons. The TMC leader also took a dig at BJP for failing to elect a party president yet. 'No candidate, no face, no consensus....,' he said. Meanwhile, CPI MP and leader of the party in the Rajya Sabha, P Sandosh Kumar, in his letter to Dhankhar, said that his resignation a month ago, citing 'health reasons,' came as a shock to Parliament and the entire country. 'While differences during his tenure in the Chair were natural, the dignity of the office he held was always respected,' he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like CVS Hides This $1 Generic Viagra - Here's the Aisle It's Really In. Friday Plans Learn More Undo What has caused greater anxiety, the letter noted, is Dhankhar's complete absence from the public domain since his resignation. The CPI MP observed that Dhankhar has not addressed the press, nor appeared in public, with even his pre scheduled events being cancelled. 'Such silence and withdrawal, after citing health reasons, has understandably created deep concern among fellow parliamentarians and citizens regarding his well-being,' Kumar said. The letter urged Dhankhar to respond and reassure Parliament and the public about his well-being at the earliest. Kumar said that while the process to elect his successor is already underway, clarity and reassurance from Dhankhar himself would help 'dispel speculation, unease, and unanswered questions that continue to surround his unprecedented resignation'.
