Japanese guitar maker Fernandes declares bankruptcy due to plummeting sales
There comes a point in many young people's lives where they decide to pick up a guitar, whether it's to impress girls, let out some teenage angst, or because their high school refused to let them take just two classes in a semester even though they already had the necessary credits to graduate, because that meant the school would get less funding from the government, and then their guidance counsellor told them, 'I'm sorry, Steve, but my hands are tied. Why don't you take something fun like Guitar Class?'
And for young people in Japan, a lot of first guitars were made by Fernandes, a Saitama-based company that started in 1969 and grew to receive worldwide recognition. Their guitars were especially popular in the '90s, having been used by members of Metallica and Green Day, while in Japan, they were often held by guitarists in the visual kei genre of rock, including those from bands like X Japan and Buck-Tick.
▼ Here's Hide of X Japan playing his Fernandes (often labeled as Burny) Yellow Heart model.
By 1999, their sales were flying high at about four billion yen (US$26 million), but have been on a steady decline since and fell to 166 million yen ($1 million) in 2022, landing them about 24 million in the red. Despite some efforts to pull out of the slump, Fernandes finally had to file for bankruptcy in June of this year.
It's fair to say that times are tough for a lot of businesses these days, but the spectacular fall of Fernandes left many wondering what happened to cause it in online comments.
'There are just too many secondhand guitars on the market now. Plus, people don't even need instruments to make music anymore.'
'My first guitar was a Fernandes.'
'Sad… It's the end of an era.'
'Does anyone even buy instruments anymore?'
'Once visual kei went down in popularity, times got hard for them.'
'I bought a Fernandes bass and guitar because I loved Hide.'
'They're still great guitars. It's just the times have changed.'
'The policies of the LDP are making all kinds of great companies crash. They need to go.'
'Most people don't buy instruments anymore, and those that do can only afford one.'
'Notice how everyone is saying 'My first guitar was a Fernandes,' but not their second, third, or fourth…'
'People don't have the endurance to learn an instrument with all the instant gratification content out there.'
'The music industry is going down all over the world. It's all EDM now.'
Saying everything is EDM is kind of a cop out. Having grown up in the '90s, there was a hell of a lot of EDM back then too, and don't make me pull out the Macarena to prove it. Even as I write this, rock band Mrs. Green Apple currently holds about a quarter of the spots on the Billboard Hot 100 Japan chart. The world's top musician, Taylor Swift, is also a prominent guitarist, and a lot of younger idol groups are increasingly instrument-oriented. So, even though the musical landscape has changed, guitars still seem to be a big part of it.
What happened to Fernandes was most likely the result of how the company was run or, as one comment pointed out, the general economic conditions of Japan as a whole. It was also reported that the brand name was sold to another company, but it remains to be seen if that means future generations around the world will continue to pick up a Fernandes as their first guitar.

Nintendo Reports Robust Early Sales of Switch 2, Keeps Full-Year Forecast
TOKYO, Aug 1 (Reuters) – Nintendo 7974.T sold more than six million units of the Switch 2 in the seven weeks following its June launch, the gaming company said on Friday, pointing to strong early demand. The successor to the hit home-portable Switch went on sale in the midst of U.S. President Donald Trump's trade war, testing Nintendo's supply chain management. 'The six million units sold are a testament to the incredible pent-up demand for an update of the first Switch,' said Serkan Toto, founder of the Kantan Games consultancy. The company provided the early sales volumes in an earnings update and said it was keeping its forecast of selling 15 million Switch 2 units in the financial year ending March 2026. Kyoto-based Nintendo said operating profit grew 4% to 56.9 billion yen ($378 million) in the April-June quarter, beating analysts' estimates. It said U.S. tariff measures and other changes in the market environment had no significant impact on its current earnings forecast. The Switch 2 was launched on June 5 with titles including 'Mario Kart World' and upgraded 'The Legend of Zelda' series with better graphics. Nintendo sold 8.67 million Switch 2 software units during the quarter with 'Mario Kart World' frequently bundled with the device. 'Donkey Kong Bananza' was released on July 17 and has a score of 92 out of 100 on reviews aggregator Metacritic, indicating universal acclaim. 'Nintendo must use the momentum and the absence of blockbuster GTA 6 this year to carry the Switch 2 through to the holidays,' said Toto of Kantan Games. 'Grand Theft Auto VI' was slated to launch this year and was expected to provide a boost to consoles such as Sony's 6758.T PlayStation 5 but its release has been delayed to 2026. Nintendo's shares closed down 0.75% ahead of earnings and have gained roughly a third this year.

EarthBound shop and art exhibition open in Tokyo for fans of Nintendo's quirkily charming classic
Oh mama! The Mother Shop is now open. Upon its opening in 2019, the sixth floor of the Parco department store in Tokyo's Shibuya neighborhood quickly established itself as a must-visit destination for video game fans, since from Day 1 it had dedicated Nintendo, Capcom, and Pokémon stores. This month, though, Shibuya Parco has made an addition for gamers with more particularly refined tastes, as it now has an EarthBound shop too. OK, so technically it's called the Mother Shop, using the Japanese-market title for the franchise which was renamed EarthBound for its overseas releases. But just like a rose by any other name would smell as sweet, the characters and creatures from Mother / EarthBound are as quirkily unforgettable regardless of what appears on the title screen. ▼ The Mother Shop (right photo) on its grand opening last Friday #MOTHERのかたち 開幕です!発売当時、攻略本などに載っていたキャラクターの粘土フィギュアが、 #ほぼ日曜日 にずらりとならびます。6階では #MOTHERのおみせ もオープン!ぜひどちらもたのしんでくださいね。この夏、渋谷パルコでおまちしています!(きこ) ※本日の入場予約は定員に達しています — ほぼ日曜日 / 渋谷PARCO8階 (@hobo_nichiyobi) July 25, 2025 Among the items on offer are acrylic character/monster keychains, with a whopping 31 different designs! For online shoppers, the only way to get these is to order the entire bundle, at an intimidating price of 23,970 yen (US$165), through the Mother online store. The new Shibuya physical shop, though, also lets you make individual blind-buy purchases for a much more manageable 770 yen a pop. ▼ The bases can be removed for easier looping of keys or use as decorative bag straps… ▼ …or left attached for use as standees. Other cool new items include T-shirts of the cast and the game's iconic 'SMAAAASH!!' critical hit indicator… …and even an ice cube, or ice character, tray. But probably the most appealing of all are the figures of EarthBound's core cast, Ness, Paula, Jeff, Poo, and Mr. Saturn. If these renditions of the characters look especially familiar, that's because they were produced by 3-D scanning the clay figures used for photographs in the game's instruction manual/player's guide. The PVC figures range in height from 8 centimeters (3.1 inches) for Mr. Saturn to 11.2 centimeters for Poo. They're only being offered as a set of all five for 19,800 yen, with a limited quantity to be produced to order, and delivery slated for early October. ▼ There's pixel art on the box tops too! The Mother Store isn't being billed as a popup shop, as it'll be around for longer than the scant few days that term often implies, but it's not a permanent addition to Shibuya Parco. It'll be open until September 8, as its residency is running alongside that of a paid Mother art exhibit on the building's 8th floor, The Shape of Mother, where the original clay versions of the core cast figures will be among the displays. Thankfully, the items shown above can also be ordered online here, but the Mother Shop looks to be a great place for fans to gather while they've got the chance… (さく) — ほぼ日曜日 / 渋谷PARCO8階 (@hobo_nichiyobi) July 29, 2025 …especially with its art wall which visitors are invited to contribute to by trying to draw the series' characters from memory.
