Everything you need to know about freckles – and the beauty hacks to try
The actor Julianne Moore is in 'great shock' after her first children's book, Freckleface Strawberry, has been suspended in schools run by the Department of Defense in the United States following a presidential executive order.
The book, a semi-autobiographical story about a seven-year-old girl who dislikes her freckles but eventually learns to live with them, is 'a book I wrote for my children and for other kids to remind them that we all struggle, but are united by our humanity and our community,' Moore said in an Instagram post on Monday.
Moore is a style icon for women with freckles, and at 64 years old has perfected the art of enhancing her skin with make-up without covering her natural marks. Lindsay Lohan, Emma Stone and Sienna Miller are known for their freckles, too. In fact, they have inspired many beauty brands to create specific products to either enhance natural freckles or apply 'faux' freckles to give the appearance of a sunkissed complexion. Here's everything you need to know about freckles.
What are freckles?
'Freckles are often used as an umbrella term for what we refer to in dermatology as ephelides and lentigines – brown marks that typically appear on sun-exposed areas,' says the consultant dermatologist Dr Cristina Psomadakis. She agrees they are entirely natural and should not be on a diversity agenda.
'While they can occur in any skin type, they are most common in fair-skinned individuals, particularly those with red hair or Celtic backgrounds.' For people with a high number of freckles, like Julianne Moore, there may also be a genetic link to the MC1R (melanocortin-1 receptor), indicating a hereditary component, adds Dr Psomadakis.
Make-up advice if you have freckles
'Don't try to cover up or conceal your freckles,' says the make-up artist Lan Nguyen-Grealis. 'There are lots of brilliant tinted moisturisers on the market that will even out the skin tone naturally while still letting your freckles shine through.' Try Studio Body and Face Foundation by Mac, £38, or the Vital Skincare Complexion Drops, £62, by Westman Atelier.

Once you've used a tinted moisturiser, a good concealer can work wonders on dark circles or any blemishes. 'Use a stick concealer rather than liquid to not go over the natural freckles,' says Nguyen-Grealis. Try the Pin Point Concealer, £27, by Lisa Eldridge, which is precise and offers a natural finish.

How to create 'faux' freckles
Using a product such as The Original Freckle by beauty brand Freck, £18, 'dot the pen across the nose, cheeks and random places allowing space,' says Nguyen-Grealis. 'Work from the outside of your face in, and focus on where the sun naturally hits the face.' To keep your faux freckles in place, spray a setting spray over your make-up for a lasting effect. Try the Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray, £32, by Charlotte Tilbury.

If you want a longer-lasting freckle, Nguyen-Grealis suggests using a self tanner with a toothbrush, and 'flick for natural dispersion and leave to dry'.
What to wear if you have freckles
'We tend to see more of the warm brown freckles on people with yellow-based undertones,' says the colour consultant Jules Standish. 'Colours that will therefore be flattering are honey and caramel browns, coral reds and pinks, orange, lime green, golden yellow and teal blues.' Julianne Moore falls into this category, and, says Standish, 'looks particularly glowing and gorgeous in gold and ivory, camel, yellow and orange-red.' Gold also suits warmer complexions better than silver.
For those with light, cool-brown freckles that appear on blue-based skin tones, such as actress Claire Foy, there are some colours in clothing that will suit you better. 'Icy/pastel blues, raspberry reds, magenta pinks, lavender and taupe, dove grey and sometimes black look fabulous,' says Standish, 'as well as silver.'

Chris Hughes' ex confirms pregnancy amid his blossoming romance with JoJo Siwa
Love Island star Chris Hughes's ex-girlfriend has revealed she is pregnant with her first child - while his relationship with Celebrity Big Brother co-star JoJo Siwa is heating up Chris Hughes's professional sport star ex-girlfriend has announced she is expecting her first child - just as his romance with Celebrity Big Brother co-star JoJo Siwa has been confirmed. Professional golfer Annabel Dimmock, 28, shared her happy news via a social media post on Saturday. The golf star took to Instagram showing herself wearing a pink crop top and a pair of short denim shorts. With her legs dangling into a swimming pool, the star showed her growing baby bump. In an accompanying caption, she wrote: "New rookie on tour coming soon" alongside pink heart emojis - and thereby announcing her pregnancy. Fans were quick to take to the comments to wish her well - and noted that the star was posing with baby pink baby shoes. One wrote: "Omg congratulations so happy for you." And another typed: "Congratulations your gonna make the best mum... can't wait to meet her." Annabel previously enjoyed a 14 month romance with Love Island star Chris which lasted from 2020 until 2022. Chris had previously hinted the split hit him hard. "I'm in a good place. I always struggle a bit when it's fresh out of a relationship because everything feels different," he told The Sun in 2022. "But I'm in the gym, I'm keeping myself busy with work. I'm all over the shop. I've got good friends and family around me which is a blessing as well, so I feel good." Annabel's agent had previously told OK! Magazine: "I can confirm they have split and Annabel wishes Chris all the best." She then went on to date Alfie Best Jnr - who is worth £10million thanks to the success of his father, entrepreneur Alfie Best Snr. When the romance was revealed in June 2023, a source told The Sun: "Alfie is a really well liked guy and has been a great match for Annabel. The pair are head over heels but taking things in their stride and not plastering it all over the internet.' Chris has since found a new romance, however, with American pop singer JoJo Siwa, 22. The pair fell for each other after appearing on ITV's Celebrity Big Brother in April this year. Viewers watched in surprise as the pair grew extremely close while in the house - despite the fact JoJo had a girlfriend, Kath Ebbs, on the outside world. When the series concluded, Kath sensationally claimed that JoJo had dumped her at the CBB wrap party. Former Dance Moms star JoJo and Chris then raised eyebrows when they enjoyed a holiday together in Mexico - where they were snapped kissing in a swimming pool. The pair later appeared to confirm their romance as Chris shared a photo of himself in bed with the younger star. JoJo has since discussed their relationship, telling ITV's Lorraine: "Chris and I have had a lot of chats. We've never gone into the kitchen and the head is turning, we've never had that version. He's the best man." Further quizzed on what was going on, she said: "It's so funny To me. It's so funny how straight up people are." Revealing that he had gifted her roses, she said: "They were discount flowers. There's this adorable clip of him, peeling off the sticker... What's even better now, everyone deserves to know, the flowers exist in a blender bottle. He's the best."

Speaking to press, Conor revealed he'd sought advice from past winner Greg O'Shea. Islanders are forbidden from revealing their involvement in the series before entering the villa. Fellow Irish rugby player Greg, 30, won series five alongside Amber Gill. Conor shared: "I know Greg through rugby circles so I spoke to him about going on Love Island. "He just said 'be yourself, it's a really really really cool experience that not many people get. "So enjoy it and yeah take it day by day and if you can be yourself you can't really go too far wrong'. "So that's my plan. He was like 'my advice might be a bit different from others because I won'." He added: "I'm 25 and I've only had one relationship and it wasn't very long. "So I feel like I'm maybe doing something wrong or maybe I'm not in the right places. Love Island Stars Harriett Blackmore and Ronnie Vint Split After Ibiza Getaway "So, hopefully that this is the right place and it should be you know because you're in a lovely villa surrounded by beautiful people, so I'm hoping that this is the one." Kyle has since spoken out about being axed saying: 'I fully co-operated with this police investigation and made it very clear that I had no involvement in this incident. 'I am not a violent person and any suggestion otherwise is a mischaracterisation.' Masked thugs stormed a wake in Stafford and hacked at a dad with a blade in February. Ashman, 23, was one of two quizzed but released with no further action. Sources said the channel was unaware of the incident and he was not flagged as part of contestant checks. The victim, 38, nearly lost his arm. He was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment and kept in for around two weeks. Another mourner was glassed, one struck with a metal pole, and two people run over by a car during the 15 minutes of terror at a social club in Stafford. Ashman, who lives in the town, was one of two men to be nicked on suspicion of affray then bailed. Police confirmed that after the matter had been investigated the pair were released with no further action only last month. A source said: 'This was a horrific attack which could have been even worse. 'Ashman may have signed up to one of the biggest shows on TV with this hanging over his head.' It is not suggested that Ashman, whose job involves laying and repairing water pipes, was involved in the attack.

The couple got engaged in June 2023. Megan looked like a princess in a white bridal gown with a long trail and veil. She was seen smiling from ear to ear as she posed with her new husband on the aisle, surrounded by roses. The ceremony was held at the breathtaking Grantley Hall in North Yorkshire. In the wedding snaps, the 2019 Celebrity X Factor winner can be seen stunning attendees in a a silk Mikado ballgown with a pleated skirt. The dress was complete with a sweeping train and a corset bodice. Megan pulled off an outfit change as day turned into night, sporting an evening dress with a square neckline and pleated overskirt at the back. Megan captioned the sweet post: "Mr & Mrs Burke." The adorable boy was born in Germany as Oliver is currently playing for Bundesliga club Union Berlin. The couple confirmed the new-born's birth with an emotional video compilation of moments from Landon's first few days of his life, which included clips of Megan holding him in the hospital after her C-section. Megan also shared her experiences of breastfeeding so far. The pair delighted fans when they announced they were expecting a baby following a secret IVF journey. The two hadn't been able to fall pregnant naturally with the TOWIE star suffering from PCOS. Things have moved pretty fast for the couple, with the ex-Hoops star getting down on one knee during a romantic trip to Montenegro in June 2023, just five months into their relationship. Megan previously gushed that they had been "inseparable" from their first date. Oliver was born in Kirkcaldy but was eligible to play for England in addition to Scotland, having been brought up south of the border from a young age. However, he opted to play for his country of birth. The sportsman signed with Celtic in January 2019 on loan from West Bromwich Albion. At the time, he had been capped five times by Scotland.
