Australian actress starts fundraiser to cryogenically preserve son, who died by suicide after bullying

NBC News27-05-2025
A mother in Australia is raising money to cryogenically preserve her 13-year-old son's body after he died by suicide following "months of brutal bullying," according to the online fundraiser.
Clare McCann, an actress and filmmaker from New South Wales, launched the fundraiser on Sunday, explaining that her son, Atreyu McCann, died May 23.
She wrote that her teenage son "took his own life after months of horrific bullying at his public school."
The mother explained she repeatedly asked her son's school and the Department of Education and Children's Services to intervene, "but nothing was done. No one stepped. And now, my beautiful boy is gone," the fundraiser says.
The New South Wales Department of Education did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday.
McCann told 7News Sydney that from the moment her son started high school, he was subjected to bullying. Even following her son's death, she said no students were disciplined.
"None of them were suspended, none of them were expelled. I feel completely let down," she told the Australian outlet.
McCann is seeking $300,000 to preserve his body within the next seven days — "or the opportunity for him to live again will be lost forever." Cryopreservation is the concept of freezing humans as soon as they die, with the hope of reviving them using future medicine.
"If we miss this window, we lose the chance for any future revival that science may offer. This is about hope and justice. Refusing to let my son's story end in silence," McCann wrote.
In the fundraiser, she said that she planned to use the money for the "immediate cryopreservation and legal transportation," medical and legal services for the procedure and a trust in her son's name.
McCann said she wants to use the money raised to ensure "this never happens again."
"Please help us preserve our beloved Atreyu and give his life the dignity and future that his school stole from him," the fundraiser said.
Australia's only cryogenics facility is on board to try.
"100% sure — we're not certain. No guarantees. But there's a reasonable probability," Peter Tsolakides of Southern Cryonics told 7News.
According to the company's website, its mission is to promote "scientifically based cryonic suspension as a credible option for life extension." The website says cryonic suspension involves encasing a body, cooling it to a vitrified state over several days, placing it in a stainless-steel vessel, and long-term maintenance of a liquid nitrogen storage environment to prevent the deterioration of tissues "for centuries if necessary."
As of Tuesday afternoon, over $7,300 AUD had been raised.
McCann had shared an Instagram post over the weekend, announcing her son's death.
"As my worst nightmare has come to life my child's has been stolen. It breaks my heart beyond what words can compare to share that in a moment of unbearable pain Atreyu took his own life," she wrote.
"This was not his fault. He was let down by the schooling system as he suffered horrendous amounts of bullying," she continued. "Now I humbly beg of you to help me preserve his life and help me fight against this inhumane landslide of child suicides caused by unchecked bullying by schools and teachers."
McCann did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday.

Both teenagers at the time, they met when 1D returned to perform on the ITV singing contest that her band Little Mix went onto win. Just months later, the young stars were a fully fledged couple, sharing sweet selfies from places like Disneyland. But it was never plain sailing as Zayn was alleged to have cheated with an Australian waitress in a London club, and was later hit with more claims of infidelity. In 2013, he demonstrated his commitment by getting a portrait of Perrie tattooed on his arm and even bought her mum a house in Dorset. But in 2015, they split — and she was left devastated, with reports at the time that he had ended their almost four-year romance by text. The ordeal inspired one of Little Mix's biggest hits, the chart-topping Shout Out To My Ex. 'TOXIC' RELATIONSHIP Now 32, the mother-of-one, who is happily engaged to her fiancé, footballer Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. has discussed her "toxic" relationship with Zayn. Speaking on this week's Paul C. Brunson's We Need To Talk podcast, she said: 'I think definitely, at the time, I thought everything we experienced in our relationship was normal. Because it was my first relationship, first love. 'I was like, 'Oh, this is how it's supposed to feel. It's supposed to feel a little bit toxic. In some ways, this is probably normal, right?'. I didn't even want to meet anybody. I was like, that's me done. I don't think I could bear that pain. 'But now, I'm thinking, 'Oh, that probably wasn't good'. And I've noticed it a lot." Perrie also talked about how her past pain affected the early days of her relationship with Alex, who she started dating in 2017 - two years after her Zayn split. 'Like in the start of the relationship, I would handle things differently with Alex, and he'd come at it with such a level head that it would throw me," she said. On what kind of man Alex is, Perrie continued: 'He's very mature. He's very laid back. He's very level-headed. "He's not the type to get mad or get angry or get funny about things. It might sound boring to some, but it's so unproblematic.' 6 Perrie was left 'devastated' by her break-up with Zayn Credit: Instagram 6 The star said she felt 'uncomfortable' when Zayn got in touch with her Credit: Getty ZAYN GETS IN TOUCH Following his split from Gigi, Perrie said Zayn got back in touch with her - something that left her "uncomfortable", especially when she had to tell Alex. She shared: 'My ex reached out and I didn't know how to handle the situation. I'd only been with Alex like a year and a half, two years. And I felt a bit uncomfortable about it. 'And I remember sweating and panicking, thinking, 'I've got to tell him that obviously I've spoken to him.' And I would be terrified... And he was like, 'Okay, well, I really appreciate you telling me, thank you for letting me know. That's fine. Like, hopefully he doesn't contact you again.' 'And I was thinking, 'Okay, cool. That's it.'' HAPPILY EVER AFTER Perrie is now embracing life as a wife-to-be, and a mother-of-one. The singer and her fiance Alex welcomed their son Axel, four, in 2021, and the pair are enjoying being parents. The footballer asked Perrie to marry him in 2022, when he got down on one knee on holiday. The happy couple have been together since November 2016, although they didn't make their relationship public until February 2017.

Betty Grumble's Enemies of Grooviness Eat Sh!t review – nude, lewd and confused

This experimental act from Australia knows how to create merry anarchy with incantatory rituals and boundary-free explicitness. Performance artist Emma Maye Gibson, otherwise known as Betty Grumble, warns us about the nudity but this might not prepare some for what comes. A gigantic 'pussy print' hangs behind her on the wall and at one madcap moment she begins making imprint smudges of her own vagina on paper to hand out. A (hopefully fake) turd on a plate is eaten with knife and fork. There is a frenzy of naked skids across the floor and a performance of masturbation that feels oddly earnest. None of it is especially shocking or dangerous, perhaps because it comes in the spirit of fun, and accompanied by synth pop beats from 'hot assistant' Chris Slist (Megana Holiday). Gibson has abundant warmth and easiness but the show is slow to get going in terms of pace and focus. Her alter ego remains an assemblage of outre wig and mask, rather than a fully assumed identity, so feels slightly redundant. The central problem, though, is the lack of story and context. Gibson introduces the show by speaking of her grief for the Palestinian-Lebanese poet and activist Candy Royalle, who died in 2018. She also mentions her experience of domestic violence. The riotous lewdness that follows seems like a ritualistic assertion of joy in the face of those things. Yet the grief and abuse stay unknown. There is one very potent scene using music and repeated phrases to summon the dark spirit of a courtroom. It carries great dramatic intensity and you wish for more of this. Even if the show is fragmentary, non-narrative and experimental, it seems too unpinned and lands as an explicit variety act, which may be the desired effect for an artist who defines herself as a sex clown. Serotonin is briefly mentioned; so are revenge and justice. There are bird sounds and disco beats. It all feels random, helter-skelter. But it also embodies the bare-bodied life, soul and spirit of a bacchanal, albeit a strangely safe one. At Assembly Roxy, Edinburgh, until 24 August All our Edinburgh festival reviews

Emmerdale fans are all saying the same thing as beloved star returns

Emmerdale's Beth Cordingly has returned to filming at the ITV soap. The beloved star plays Ruby Miligan in the ITV soap, the wife of Caleb Miligan (William Ash) and mum of Steph and Nicky Miligan (Georgia Jay and Lewis Cope). When Ruby arrived in 2024, she was a chaotic character, not afraid to say what was on her mind. She clashed with multiple village residents, but it was only towards the end of the year that we discovered more about her past and therefore, reasons behind her bold persona. The arrival of Steph and her grandfather Anthony Fox (Nicholas Day) caused Ruby to struggle with her emotions. It became apparent there was a reason why Ruby didn't enjoy having Anthony close by but because she didn't reveal the truth, her behaviour impacted her relationships with the likes of Steph and Caleb. It was confirmed in December that Anthony sexually abused Ruby when she was a child. As the new year began, Ruby bravely decided to conduct a DNA test on Caleb and Steph, fearing her daughter might actually be Anthony's child. The DNA test sadly confirmed that Anthony is both Steph's father and grandfather. The storyline was incredibly powerful and saw Beth Cordingly inundated with supportive messages from fans. Away from the dramatic soapland world, Beth enjoys sharing snippets of her life on Instagram. Just recently, she took to the platform to confirm that she had returned to filming at Emmerdale after a brief period away. The clip Beth posted on her page sees her posing in a mirror with a Ruby Miligan outfit on. 'Ruby's back!', she wrote alongside the post. 'And so is her makeup and costume, thank god!'. Beth's followers shared plenty of messages in the comments section, all thrilled that we'd be getting new Ruby scenes soon. 'Yes ruby's back! Stunning Beth xx', this account noted. 'Loved the fit', the account StephsMiligans wrote. CarlasConnorr agreed and said: 'The fit is giving boss lady.' This user joined the many saying the same thing and said: 'You look stunning diva!'. Beth's character Ruby was arrested earlier this month following a fight with local GP Manpreet Sharma (Rebecca Sarker). The two women made a bit of a show of themselves at the depot because they ended up fighting over Ross Barton (Michael Parr). Ruby was struggling in the aftermath of Steph's departure and believed it was Manpreet's fault. She wasn't exactly to blame, as Steph left because Ross failed to tell her that he slept with Manpreet when they weren't a couple. This, along with everything that's happened between her and her daughter this year, left Ruby with the view that if Manpreet and Ross never had their fling, Steph would still be around. The fight at the depot ended with Ruby and Manpreet heading to the station after being arrested for ABH. The next day, as they waited for a taxi, Manpreet and Ruby tried to score one up on each other. Ruby did this by bringing up Meena, Manpreet's serial killer sister. When it was Manpreet's turn, she tried to get at Ruby by mentioning her family and more specifically, her father. More Trending Triggered, Ruby then shut Manpreet up by revealing that her father raped her. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street? It was this moment that saw a switch in the dynamic between the two women, as Manpreet gently supported and listened to Ruby as she spoke about her past, and how the abuse impacted her mental health. The conversation proved that Manpreet and Ruby are not too dissimilar. Their pasts aren't the same, but they are both strong women who keep secrets about themselves, and are sometimes afraid of making friends and letting someone in.
