Extreme Weather, Climate Change Impacts Hit Africa Hard
Extreme weather and climate change impacts are hitting every single aspect of socio-economic development in Africa and exacerbating hunger, insecurity and displacement, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) State of the Climate in Africa 2024 report.
The year 2024 was the warmest or second-warmest year, depending on the dataset, and the past decade has been the warmest on record. Sea-surface temperatures around the continent were at record levels, with particularly rapid warming in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Marine heatwaves impacted the biggest area since measurements started in 1993, it says.
'The State of the Climate in Africa report reflects the urgent and escalating realities of climate change across the continent,' said WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo. 'It also reveals a stark pattern of extreme weather events, with some countries grappling with exceptional flooding caused by excessive rainfall and others enduring persistent droughts and water scarcity.'
'WMO and its partners are committed to working with Members to build resilience and strengthen adaptation efforts in Africa through initiatives like Early Warnings for All,' said Celeste Saulo. 'It is my hope that this report will inspire collective action to address increasingly complex challenges and cascading impacts.'
The report highlights the challenges for agriculture and the environment; food, water and energy security; and health and education. But it also stresses opportunities and new tools to meet the challenges.
Artificial intelligence, mobile communication tools, and advanced weather prediction models are enhancing the accuracy and reach of weather services across Africa. However, further scaling up digital transformation requires greater investment in infrastructure, stronger data-sharing frameworks and more inclusive service delivery, it says.
A greater sense of urgency is needed to improve early warning systems, and strengthen climate resilience and adaptation, according to the report, which urges governments, development partners, and the private sector to accelerate climate-smart investment.
The WMO State of the Climate in Africa 2024 report is accompanied by a digital story map and is one of a series of WMO climate reports which seek to inform decision-making for national and regional climate strategies.

Yara Sameh The Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) predicts that the country will continue experiencing a rise in temperature on Wednesday. Extremely hot and humid weather will prevail during the day nationwide, and the North Coast will experience hot and humid conditions. The weather will seem hotter due to the high humidity levels, which will push up the heat index 2-4 degrees. The country will also witness mist on agricultural and highway roads from the north of the country to Cairo. Wind will occur occasionally across the country. There is a chance of rain, sometimes thunderous, in Cairo, Northwest Coast, Lower Egypt, Sinai, Red Sea governorate, and Central and South Upper Egypt. Furthermore, maritime navigation is also expected to be disrupted in the Gulf of Suez, with winds averaging 40 to 60 km/h and waves ranging between 2: 3 meters. The Mediterranean Sea will experience moderate waves ranging between 1.5 and 2 meters in height varying between northeast and easterly surface winds. Waves in the Red Sea will be moderate to turbulent ranging between 1.5 and 2 meters in height varying between northeast and northwest surface winds. Moderately hot and humid weather is also expected to prevail in Egypt at night and in the early hours. 1 Dead, 180 Evacuated as Wildfire Rages Near Madrid
Israa Farhan Firefighters have brought under control a large wildfire near Tres Cantos, close to the Spanish capital Madrid, which claimed the life of one person and forced the evacuation of 180 residents. According to Madrid regional authorities, favorable overnight conditions allowed crews to contain the fire after hours of intense work. The blaze, which broke out earlier this week, destroyed more than 2,000 acres of land and posed a serious threat to nearby communities. Emergency services reported that a man suffered burns covering 98 percent of his body. He was airlifted to La Paz Hospital but later died from his injuries. Spain's national weather agency has warned that the ongoing heat wave will continue through Tuesday, with temperatures in some areas expected to reach 44°C.
