Man Says This is the Real Reason Some Cars Have the Gas Tank on the Driver's Side. Is His Viral Claim True?
If you've ever wondered why some cars have their gas caps on the passenger side while others have them on the driver's side, you're not alone. One content creator on TikTok claims it's all about traditional gender roles—but not everyone agrees.
In a now-viral video, Kleib (@bigkleib34) offered his take: if your gas tank's on the passenger side, you might be driving a 'chick car.'
'Sorry, bud,' he laughed.
His video has garnered over 2.1 million views as of Monday, inspiring considerable pushback from users who said his explanation was more sensational than factual.

According to Kleib, gas tank placement dates back to a time when 'men were chivalrous and pumped their lady's gas.'
'Apparently, this idea dates way back,' he noted.
Kleib claimed that a man's car would have the filler door on the driver's side so he could easily hop out and fill it. Meanwhile, a woman's car would have it on the passenger side—allowing the man, riding shotgun, to do the honors for her.
'If your gas tank is on the passenger side, sorry, bud, you got a chick car,' he said.
So… Is Any of That True?
Not really.
The actual reason some cars have fuel doors on different sides has more to do with engineering, design logistics, and safety than chivalry.
In countries like the United States, where people drive on the right side of the road, positioning the gas cap on the passenger side helps keep drivers out of traffic if they ever need to refuel from a gas can on the shoulder, as drivers are more likely to pull over on the right side.
Some manufacturers also find it more efficient to design cars with filler doors on a specific side based on the layout of other components, like the exhaust system, or because it simplifies production lines.
On the flip side, some argue that driver-side placement is more convenient when pulling into a pump, especially in countries where most gas station layouts favor that design. There's no universal standard; different automakers make different decisions based on internal priorities, safety regulations, and the markets they serve.
So, no, your gas cap placement doesn't indicate anything about your car's masculinity or femininity. It simply reflects that your car was built by engineers trying to make everything fit. If you're ever unsure where your fuel door is, just check the dashboard. Most automakers include a small arrow next to the fuel gauge pointing to the side of the car where the gas cap is located.

'Aint no way a Kia Soul is a dude car,' another said.
'Me driving an

(driver's side) looking at my husband who drives a WRX (passenger's side),' a third viewer wrote.
Other commenters stepped in to set the record straight: The side your car's gas cap it on has nothing to do with masculinity or femininity.
'German cars the gas tank is on the passenger's side so you don't ding your driver's side door when you fill up,' one man wrote. 'Now you've been educated.'
'It's entirely dependent on what side of the road the country that the car was made for drives on,' another said. 'Nice try though.'
'European cars have it on the passenger's side and American cars have it on the driver's side,' a third person added. (This is true.)

‘Smalltima, Talltima, Recalltima:' Man Says All Nissans are ‘Altima-Based.' Then He Reveals Why
As summer approaches, this man says you need to beware of Nissan Altimas hitting the road. He may have a point. While sedans have dwindled in popularity, Altimas have remained at the top of Nissan's bestseller list and are generally popular due to their fuel efficiency, comfort, and price. Get the best news, reviews, columns, and more delivered straight to your inbox, daily. back Sign up For more information, read our Privacy Policy and Terms of Use . Despite their popularity, it's unclear if the company will continue producing one of its best-selling products. It's rumored that Nissan will discontinue the Altima in 2026. Altima haters everywhere are rejoicing at the thought of having fewer of these vehicles on the road. But how did the Altima become so notorious? A Punchline With Four Wheels In a Facebook Reel , car lover Shadetreemotors jokingly accuses Nissan of lacking creativity in its designs. 'Watch out, everyone, it's springtime. That means the Altimas will become more aggressive and numerous,' Shadetreemotors jests while showing clips of broken down and damaged Altimas. Trending Now Man Fills Up His Truck. Then He Pulls Out a Trick for When the Handle Clicks and Stops Pumping Man Spots Chihuahua in a Ford With the Engine Off and Windows Rolled Up. What Should He Do? To help people stay safe out there, he compiled a list of all the Nissans you should look out for on the road. Fair warning, his list is highly unserious. 'Remember, Nissan doesn't make any car that isn't Altima based,' Shadetreemotors says in the reel. As images of various models of damaged Nissans flash by, Shadetreemotors describes them as the Smalltima, Talltima (pickup truck), Crawltima (bigger truck), HVACinstalltima (white cargo van), Beckywe'regoingtothemalltima (pink SUV), and Recalltima (Nissan with a deployed airbag). 'Stay safe out there,' he warns. One of the Most Dangerous Cars on the Road Shadetreemotors may have been joking, but he does have a point about Altimas being dangerous. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), an independent nonprofit dedicated to making vehicles and roads safer, conducted a study of driver deaths that occurred from 2018 to 2021. It found that the Nissan Altima has among the worst death rates. The Altima comes in at number nine for driver death and 14 for other driver death. In contrast, the Nissan Pathfinder 2WD and Nissan Murano 2WD were among the safest for driver deaths. According to the study, the vehicles with the highest rate of driver deaths are: Mitsubishi Mirage G4 Mitsubishi Mirage hatchback Dodge Challenger 2WD Hyundai Accent Chevrolet Spark Kia Rio sedan Dodge Charger HEMI 2WD Chevrolet Camaro convertible Nissan Altima Kia Forte The study found the vehicles with the highest rates of other-driver deaths are: Ram 3500 Crew Cab long bed 4WD Dodge Charger HEMI 2WD Ford F-350 Crew Cab 4WD Ram 2500 Mega Cab 4WD Kia Optima Kia Rio sedan Ram 2500 Crew Cab short bed 4WD Ford F-250 Crew Cab 4WD Dodge Charger 2WD Ram 1500 Crew Cab short bed 2WD Why the Bad Rep? The consensus on Altima drivers being reckless is so clear that there's even a term for it: 'Big Altima Energy.' And despite having good safety ratings, from 2020-2022, The Autopian reports that Altimas had a crash claim rate 45% above average and more than double the average rate of personal injury and medical payment claims for midsize sedans. One Redditor shared why they think this may be the case. They think it has to do with the drivers, not the car. 'Nissans are heavily used in the rental market and resold cheaply—who buys cheap cars?' they wrote. 'Poor people and those with bad driving records who can't get financing. People working delivery jobs, or multiple jobs—both with an elevated risk for accidents. I mean—any other vehicle could slot right in if used the same way.' Commenters React People were highly amused by Shadetreemotors' take on Nissans. 'I saw this a year ago and always laugh to myself whenever I see an HVAC Installtima,' a top comment reads. 'My dads Altima is called the Assaultima. I named it,' one person shared. 'I'm a dealer, the one and only Altima I got had a bullet hole in it,' another wrote. 'Nissan Altimas always have the right of way…. Whoever is less afraid to get into an accident will always have the right of way,' a commenter said. Via direct message, Shadetreemotors told Motor1, " Nissan is a terrible car company and all their cars are based on one terrible car." "As a mechanic I can confidently say not one of their current cars is remotely reliable." ‘Never Knew This:' Honda Civic Driver of 3 Years Reaches for Key Fob. Then She Realizes It Has a Little-Known Feature
Now that summer is in full swing, internal car temperatures are on the rise. Leaving your car out to bake in the sun can be a brutal experience upon return. The car feels like a sauna when entering, while the leather seats burn the skin. You slowly roast alive while the air conditioning takes an eternity to get going. This is why car drivers will use a series of moves to do everything to keep the car temperature down while away. Drivers will prioritize parking in the shade, using windshield sun shades, and tinting windows to block out the sun. Some will also crack windows to let subtle airflow into the car while parked. In a TikTok with nearly 7,000 views, Bryce (@ recently discovered a new key fob feature with her Honda Civic that'll help her beat the heat this summer. New Feature or Just a New Discovery? In her post, Bryce finds out that she can roll down the windows using the key fob of her Honda Civic. While scrolling through TikTok, she found a video revealing this feature for Honda Civics. Bryce immediately reached for her key fob and went to the garage. 'If this works, this is going to be crazy,' she begins her video. She points the key fob at her car and presses unlock on her key fob twice with an extended hold on the second press. After patiently waiting to see what happens, she was in disbelief to see her Civic windows roll down. More on Honda 'Do People Not Read the Owner's Manual Anymore?': Woman Buys New Honda. Then She Tries Filling It Up With Gas Honda Wants to Make the 'World's Most Efficient' Hybrids This discovery left her hyped and even more in love with her Civic. While this was a new discovery for Bryce, some viewers mentioned that this isn't new. 'My 2010 Accord does this and when I first found out it did it I was so hype,' one TikTok commenter shared. 'Even my old 2007 Honda accord did this when I had it,' another commenter added. How to Roll Down Windows Using your Key Fob While each car brand will have a specific cadence and sequence to follow, here are some beginning places to search. First, check the owner's manual. The manual will provide the specific instructions needed to activate the key fob window roll-down. As some makes and models will vary, the manual is the best place to get correct information specific to your car. Now, if reading through the manual isn't your thing, try this. Click the unlock button once on your keyfob, then hold it again for anywhere from five to 10 seconds. While holding down the unlock button, see if the windows start rolling down. Once the windows are at the desired height, release the unlock button and press lock to stop the window from rolling down. What Are the Downsides to This Key Fob Feature? With any new features come some issues. One of the downsides to this key fob secret is that it's simply not commonly known among drivers. While this feature is great if you know about it, it's not always so great when you accidentally discover it. Multiple stories have been shared on Reddit and other forums about drivers coming back to their cars only to find the windows are down. As commenters note, these drivers likely unknowingly activated this key fob feature. This can happen when the key fob is sitting buried in a purse or deep down in pants pockets. Drivers have left cars in parking lots for hours with windows fully rolled down, only to hope nothing is gone or damaged. In addition, storms can sweep through at any moment, which would put a real damper on the day. While some drivers are excited to flex this feature off, others are irritated by it. Which side are you on? What Did Viewers Think? 'That's not crazy y'all what's crazy is that they built these cars to go over 300000 miles y'all now that's crazy,' one commented. 'Does nobody read their car's instruction manuals anymore?' a second added. 'Most cars nowadays do it, y'all just gotta figure out the sequence for your specific car,' a third shared. 'Took me 6 months to find out my car does this,' another driver added. Motor1 has contacted Bryce via TikTok direct message. We'll be sure to update this article if we get a response. You Can't Give Teslas Away These Days, but Tesla's Actually Trying To
Free car giveaways are typically associated with TV game shows, radio sweepstakes, or halftime contests, but right now there's one being hosted directly by an automaker. By participating in Tesla's 'TeslaVision' contest, you could score a brand-new Model Y and a private tour of the Texas Gigafactory. In 2017, Tesla held 'Project Loveday,' a video contest named after a 10-year-old fan of the brand who wrote a letter to CEO Elon Musk suggesting that customers submit promotional video clips to make up for the company's lack of traditional advertising. That contest received thousands of submissions and was eventually won by none other than YouTube superstar Marques Brownlee. The TeslaVision Contest Now, Tesla is holding the TeslaVision contest as a follow-up to Project Loveday. According to the company, it's here 'to commemorate launching deliveries of New Model Y in all continents where we operate.' That new Model Y is the so-called Juniper version, which arrived earlier this year sporting hardware updates, a remodeled interior, and a Cybertruck-esque headlight bar. So, the TeslaVision contest—it is, in Tesla's words, 'a global celebration and showcase of the owners and fans who have always recognized the true value and impact of our products.' To participate, submit a video no longer than 90 seconds 'showing how Tesla vehicles give you more in your life—more freedom, more safety, more fun, more convenience.' That video must then be posted to YouTube and shared on X and Instagram with Tesla's accounts tagged, and then those links uploaded in the contest submission form on Tesla's site. In addition to the Model Y winner, two runners-up will get an all-expenses-paid private tour of the Gigafactory outside of Austin, Texas, which produces some Model Ys and every Cybertruck. We Have Some Thoughts Acclaimed as America's best-selling EV, one might imagine that the Model Y is in such high demand that it wouldn't be so available as to be offered up as a giveaway. Evidently, however, Tesla has enough idle inventory to make one the grand prize in the TeslaVision contest. The EV innovator has faced harsh backlash due to CEO Musk's controversial involvement in Donald Trump's presidential administration. It's possible that the TeslaVision contest is being held to gather and then promote positive takes from Tesla fans who remain unbothered by Musk's drastic social impact, and are uninterested in the numerous other EVs from brands that don't have the contentious symbolism that Tesla now does, in addition to potentially longer range, faster charging, better quality, greater comfort, prettier styling, or higher performance. To wit, we question how a video could be created under Tesla's suggested parameters. Regarding 'freedom,' the advantage Tesla once held by keeping its widespread Supercharger network exclusive to its own cars is slipping away as other EVs gain access, allowing rivals to also enjoy road trip ease. Regarding safety, the 2025 Model Y scores the highest five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA, as a plethora of other EVs do, but it no longer qualifies for IIHS Top Safety Pick as it did in years past. Furthermore, how Tesla's flagship Full Self-Driving (FSD) software has a propensity to make errors such as veering across a solid double yellow line into the oncoming lane of traffic makes safety seem tenuous at best. About fun, in our testing and assessments we've found Tesla vehicles don't have much to offer beyond the common EV attribute of quick straight-line acceleration, while rivals have superior chassis and handling refinement. To convenience, the spacious cabin, frunk and sub-trunk, and minimalistic layout found in Tesla vehicles contribute to that measure. However, the experience with MotorTrend 's 2023 Model Y long-term review car has often proved incredibly frustrating, such as the finicky flush-mounted exterior door handles, which often do nothing because the car doesn't recognize its smartphone app-based key, or how the cruise control can deactivate when using the windshield washers, or how, for now, using an adapter is necessary to charge on public Level 2 plugs. Hmm, maybe we wouldn't win this contest... positive thoughts! We should also point out the incongruity between asking fans and owners—many of whom likely already own a Model Y, given its ubiquity—to get excited about winning another one. If you're super excited about Tesla and want to show the company just how great you think it is and win a Model Y, you can submit your video clip to the TeslaVision contest website. Act soon, since the contest closes on July 17, 2025 or when 10,000 entries are received, whichever comes first.
