Jrue Holiday being traded from Celtics to Trail Blazers, AP source says
Jrue Holiday's acquisition from Portland helped spark the Boston Celtics to their NBA-record 18th championship last season.
Holiday is being sent back to the Trail Blazers by a Boston team that could now be in transition, a person with knowledge of the details said early Tuesday,
ESPN reported that the Celtics would get Anfernee Simons and two second-round picks from the Trail Blazers.
The departure of Holiday, who made his sixth career All-Defensive team selection in his first season in Boston, was confirmed to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal is not yet official.
Holiday was traded by the Milwaukee Bucks to Portland in September 2023 when the Bucks acquired perennial All-Star Damian Lillard. Holiday was then dealt days later to the Celtics, moving right into the starting lineup and eventually earning his second career title last June.
But the Celtics have now lost a second member of that starting lineup for at least part of next season, with All-NBA forward Jayson Tatum having surgery after an Achilles tendon injury in the loss to the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Simons could provide some of the scoring punch the Celtics have lost, having averaged 19.3 points last season after going for a career-best 22.6 per game in 2023-24.
But the Celtics will miss the defense and leadership that Holiday provided. The two-time Olympic gold medalist's scoring was down though, with the 11.1 points he averaged last season his lowest since his rookie season in 2009-10, and more than eight points lower than the 19.3 he put up in 2022-23 with the Bucks, when he was an All-Star.
More than that, the Celtics were likely motivated to trade Holiday because of the $104.4 million owed to him over the remaining three seasons of the contract extension they gave him last year, on top of the huge deals for Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
Holiday, who helped the Bucks win the 2021 NBA title, has averaged 15.8 points in a 16-year career that also includes stints with Philadelphia and New Orleans.

Where Wisconsin star John Tonje lands in latest ESPN projection, one week before NBA draft
With just one week remaining until the 2025 NBA draft, ESPN still views Wisconsin star John Tonje as a mid-second-round selection. The outlet released its latest two-round mock draft on Tuesday. The mock specifically slotted Tonje at No. 42 overall to the Sacramento Kings. Advertisement While the All-American wing still appears far from cracking next Wednesday's first round, his draft stock has risen since the conclusion of the 2024-25 season. Tonje went off the board at No. 48 in ESPN's initial post-combine projection in mid-May. He has since had several notable predraft workouts, including one with the Kings. At the same time, his draft stock is trending toward the top 40. The former Badger is looking to stick on an NBA roster after experiencing a dramatic rise during his one year with the Badgers. After joining the program as the No. 296-ranked transfer in the 2024 cycle, the 6-foot-5 wing went on to average 19.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per game, leading Wisconsin to a strong 27-10 record. The former Missouri and Colorado State transfer importantly showed out in the team's biggest games. Will former Wisconsin star Chucky Hepburn be selected in the 2025 NBA draft?
All-American wing John Tonje isn't the only now-former Badger hoping to hear his name called during the 2025 NBA draft. Former Wisconsin star point guard Chucky Hepburn, who played his final collegiate season at Louisville, is another. Unlike Tonje, who is a clear-cut second-round selection, Hepburn is among a large group of players currently on the outside looking in of two-round mock draft projections. Remember, there will only be 59 selections this year (instead of 60) after the New York Knicks were forced to forfeit their second-round pick. Advertisement More specifically, CBSSports slots Hepburn just outside of its top 59 -- it has the veteran point guard at No. 77 in its latest NBA draft top 100 player ranking. Hepburn's stock is trending positively after a strong performance at the G League Elite Camp last month. He's looking to validate a breakout senior season with the Cardinals, which included 16.4 points, 3.5 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 2.4 steals per game, plus shooting totals of 43% from the field, 33% from 3 and 84.4% from the free-throw line. Hepburn has worked out for the Toronto Raptors and Charlotte Hornets, according to RookieWire's Cody Taylor. While the 6-foot-2 point guard is currently slotted outside of the draft's two rounds, he appears to be a prime candidate to sign as an undrafted free agent. He'd then need a standout summer league and preseason to play his way onto an NBA roster.
