What New Satellite Photo Reveals About China's Invasion Plans

New satellite imagery has surfaced showing China's enigmatic new landing barges—vessels believed to have been designed to support large-scale amphibious assaults, such as a potential invasion of Taiwan.
Newsweek reached out to the Chinese defense ministry by email with a request for comment outside of office hours.
Why It Matters
Taiwan, a global hub for high-tech supply chains and a major U.S. trade partner, faces increasing pressure from China. Beijing's Chinese Communist Party government claims Taiwan as its territory—despite never having ruled there—and has vowed unification is inevitable.
China has intensified pressure on Taiwan through near-daily military sorties in the Taiwan Strait, large-scale exercises and simulated blockades. Current and former U.S. officials believe Chinese President Xi Jinping has directed the People's Liberation Army (PLA) to be capable of taking the island by 2027.
What To Know
First reported by Naval News in January, the vessels were constructed in Guangzhou Shipyards by the CSSC Offshore & Marine Engineering Company (COMEC), which provides the PLA with provider replenishment oilers and other support ships.
The barges, dubbed "Shuiqiao"—Mandarin for "water bridge"—barges, are notable for their jack-up legs and bridges that extend nearly 400 feet. These features allow multiple barges to be connected, forming a single long span, as seen in images and video shared by military enthusiasts on Chinese social media.
A Shuiqiao barge functions as a temporary pontoon. Tanks and other armored vehicles ferried to the coast by China's roll-on/roll-off ships could drive over the bridge and disembark farther inland, bypassing heavily defended beaches.

Earlier, I noted the absence of the first batch of #Shuqiao class amphibious assault barges. Huge thanks to @SinoTalk (Joaquin Camarena) for the excellent clarification (and great posts on the topic)!

A July 27 photo captured by satellite imagery provider SkyFi shows three of the barges near Nantian Island in Zhejiang province, accompanied by a PLA Fujian-class tanker.
Open-source analyst MT Anderson, who shared the photos on X, formerly Twitter, wrote that the barges appeared to be undergoing verification testing.
Analysts say the choice of location is intentional, as the terrain closely resembles coastal areas northeast of Taipei, the Taiwanese capital.
"It reflects a deliberate effort to simulate Taiwan's northeast coastline, particularly areas like Yilan County and New Taipei City, where rugged, less-defended beaches could offer the PLA an asymmetric opening," Bryce Barros, former China affairs analyst with the German Marshall Fund, told Newsweek.

"This suggests the PLA may be preparing to rapidly disembark vehicles, troops, and supplies near the capital if a beachhead can be secured," he added.
The barges, however, would be highly vulnerable without established air and sea superiority and could still face threats from Taiwanese drones and portable missile launchers like the Javelin, Barros said, pointing to Ukraine's defense against invading Russian forces as an example.
What's Next
A more recent satellite photo, also shared by Anderson, showed the barges—which bear the hull numbers "Dongong" 401, 402 and 403—were still at Nantian Island as of Sunday.
If the ships are undergoing verification training, they could soon be incorporated into the PLA Navy.

Senate Confirms Ex-Fox News Host Jeanine Pirro as DC Prosecutor

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The U.S. Senate has confirmed former Fox News host Jeanine Pirro as the top federal prosecutor for Washington D.C., filling a critical Justice Department position after President Donald Trump withdrew his initial controversial nominee. Pirro was confirmed in a 50-45 vote, largely along party lines, to serve as U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. The confirmation comes after Trump pulled his first pick, conservative activist Ed Martin Jr., following opposition from key Republican senators who cited concerns over Martin's support for January 6th Capitol rioters. Martin has since been reassigned as the Justice Department's pardon attorney. Before her acting appointment in May, Pirro co-hosted "The Five" on Fox News weekday evenings, where she frequently interviewed Trump. Her media career has not been without controversy—she faces a $2.7 billion libel lawsuit from voting technology company Smartmatic USA over spreading false claims about the 2020 election. The confirmation process faced additional complications when Democratic members of the Senate Judiciary Committee walked out to protest Emil Bove's nomination to become a federal appeals court judge, though Republican committee members voted unanimously to advance Pirro's nomination to the Senate floor. This is a breaking news story. Updates to follow.

Cincinnati police chief under scrutiny for mass brawl was accused by cops of anti-white discrimination, using ‘race-based quota system': suit

Embattled Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge was being sued by four high-ranking officers claiming she discriminated against white lieutenants while doling out promotions and assignments using a 'race-based quota system.' The lawsuit, filed in May, resurfaced as Theetge faces scrutiny amid her department's investigation into the high-profile vicious street beatdown of a defenseless white woman in the Ohio city last weekend. Capt. Robert Wilson and Lieutenants Patrick Caton, Gerald Hodges and Andrew Mitchell claimed in the suit that the police chief bypassed them for positions they deserved — and instead gave minority and female lieutenants preferential treatment, Newsweek reported. 'These assignments, which offer significant professional and financial benefits, have been disproportionately awarded to non-white and/or female officers, often disregarding merit, qualifications, or legitimate business needs,' the lawsuit claimed, local Fox19 reported. Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge is accused in a lawsuit of discriminating against white male officers. City of Cincinnati 'The public deserves a police department that upholds equal treatment under the law, and we trust the judicial process will deliver a just outcome.' Theetge was allegedly 'personally involved in the assignment decisions' and used a 'race-based quota system' to promote minorities and women to career-enhancing positions, the suit states. Coveted 'preferred-assignments' were doled out to 79% of minority lieutenants and 89% of female lieutenants in 2023 — but just 44% of white male Lieutenants were given the assignment, the lawsuit claimed. The officers are seeking compensatory damages, punitive damages, and injunctive relief in the ongoing civil case that names Theetge and the city of Cincinnati as defendants. Theetge is currently embroiled in another racially-tinged controversy as cops in the Queen City continue their investigation into the wild brawl — which went viral when footage emerged showing a group of black suspects beating two white victims. Theetge at a press conference addressing the racially tinged brawl on Cincinnati streets last week. FOX19 NOW | Cincinnati Critics have called out the police department for not moving quickly enough to arrest the suspects, with Vice President JD Vance, a former Ohio senator, urging cops to 'throw their asses in prison.' 'The cops in Cincinnati, the law enforcement, you gotta prosecute people. We've had way too much lawlessness on the streets of great American cities,' Vance said during a speech on July 28, two days after the beatdown. 'The only way to destroy that street violence is to take the thugs who engaged in that violence and throw their ass in prison.' He further stated that police officers in Ohio needed to be more emboldened to address crime. A Russian woman identified as 'Holly' was sucker-punched by a man in the disturbing attack that elicited 'ooos' from a crowd of onlookers, some of whom filmed on their phones instead of coming to her aid. When one man did come to her aid, he was savagely beaten, too. Only one person at the scene called 911 during the brutal episode. A fourth person, Dominique Kittle, 37, was arrested in connection to the attack on Friday, nearly a week after the shocking incident. Three other alleged attackers — Jermaine Matthews, 39; Montianez Merriweather, 34; and Dekyra Vernon, 24 — were arrested earlier last week. Two more suspects, who have not been publicly identified, are being tracked down by a fugitive task force, authorities said.

Donald Trump Lashes Out At Chuck Schumer As Democrats Stall Nominations

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. President Donald Trump in a strongly worded Truth Social post published on Saturday evening heavily criticized Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, for his demands in exchange for ending his party's filibuster of every nominee the president puts before the Senate. Democrats are stalling the process, dragging it out and eating into the Senate recess and frustrating their counterparts across the aisle - as well as the president, who suggested the Republicans should tell Schumer and Democrats to "GO TO HELL!" Newsweek reached out to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer's office by email outside of normal business hours on Saturday evening for comment. Why It Matters Trump still has a slate of nominees needing confirmation by the Senate, but Democrats have refused to simply pass them, even as Trump demands that his nominees "should NOT BE FORCED TO WAIT" and serve his administration. The Democrats have forced procedural votes on almost all of Trump's picks, which means the Senate has to debate and approve the rules of voting before each nominee confirmation - a process that has forced the Senate to delay its annual August recess and forcing Senate Majority Leader John Thune to keep the Senate in session over the weekend to try and push through as many nominees as possible. More// Mehmet Eser/Middle East Images/AFP via Getty Images What To Know Thune ahead of the weekend said he would leave negotiations to Trump and Schumer, telling reporters on Friday: "That's how this is going to get resolved. We'll see where that leads." That approach has ultimately led to Trump lashing out at Schumer on Truth Social after a day of back and forth, thought it remains unclear what Schumer is asking of Trump in exchange for allowing the confirmations to proceed at a normal pace. Trump instead blasted "Cryin' Chuck Schumer" and claimed the senator was "demanding over One Billion Dollars in order to approve a small number of our highly qualified nominees, who should right now be helping to run our Country." "This demand is egregious and unprecedented, and would be embarrassing to the Republican Party if it were accepted," Trump wrote. "It is political extortion, by any other name." "Tell Schumer, who is under tremendous political pressure from within his own party, the Radical Left Lunatics, to GO TO HELL!" he continued. "Do not accept the offer, go home and explain to your constituents what bad people the Democrats are, and what a great job the Republicans are doing, and have done, for our Country. Have a great RECESS and, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!" In a previous post, Trump said he was "Very proud of our great Republican Senators for fighting, over the Weekend and far beyond, if necessary, in order to get my great Appointments approved, and on their way to helping us MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!" He also said in that earlier post that the "Democrats want our Country to fail, because they have failed. Thank you to Senator John Thune and our Republican Warriors in the Senate. Fight and WIN. I am with you all the way!!!" He later in the evening posted two further messages - one in which he called the Democrats "EXTORTIONISTS WHO ALMOST DESTROYED OUR COUNTRY," and one in which he again praised "A great job done" by Thune and House Speaker Mike Johnson for their work on passing the One Big Beautiful Bill. However, Democrats have indicated they have no desire to give in so quickly, even as they see a chance to retreat and regroup after months of unsuccessfully trying to get any concessions on Trump's bill and failing to prevent the passage of a Recissions Bill, which has gutted some public funding. Three Republicans have at times worked with Democrats throughout the process: Chuck Grassley of Iowa, Josh Hawley of Missouri, and Susan Collins of Maine - and Trump has criticized all of them at various times throughout the week in Truth Social posts. What Happens Next The Senate still has to see to dozens of nominations, according to The Associated Press. Confirming all of them with the current process that Democrats have pursued could take months, but the Senate may simply go on recess for August and return to fight it out again in September.
