UNC baseball hammers Arizona in the first game of the super regional series
After a dominant Chapel Hill Regional, UNC baseball met up with Arizona on Friday in the first game of a best-of-three series in the Chapel Hill Super Regional at Boshamer Stadium. The Diamond Heels ran away with this one early and easily, winning 18-2, despite Jake Knapp struggling on the mound through the first few innings.
After going down 1-0 in the top of the first inning, the Tar Heels came back scorching hot at the plate, scoring five runs to boost the lead for Knapp on the mound. Luke Stevenson got back to his usual self after just one single in the entire Chapel Hill Regional. Stevenson had an RBI single and a three-run home run in the first two innings.
Gavin Gallaher, the Chapel Hill Regional MOP, went 13-for-18 with three home runs and 10 RBIs in that four-game stretch. He continued his streak with an RBI single in the first inning for his 66th RBI on the season to lead the team.
The other player that got involved early was first baseman Hunter Stokely. Stokely hit a three-run homer in the first inning, scoring Gallaher and Stevenson. By the end of the second inning, North Carolina had stretched out an 8-1 lead.
Knapp was still struggling on the mound, loading the bases multiple times in back-to-back innings, allowing just one run in both of those scenarios. He ended his day allowing nine hits with two earned runs and three strikeouts over 7.0 innings.
The two runs for Arizona didn't matter much as North Carolina just kept piling on the runs in the ensuing innings. Gallaher tacked on another RBI, as did Stokely. Alex Madera got on the board with a two-RBI single in the sixth inning. Carter French scored on a throwing error by Arizona before Stokey hit his fifth RBI of the contest in the eighth inning.
You would think that the runs would stop there, but they didn't. Sam Angelo hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning as well, scoring Stokley and Tyson Bass. Kane Kepley had the final run of the game with a solo home run, just two at-bats after Angelo.
North Carolina will match up with Arizona for Game 2 of the best-of-three series in the Chapel Hill Super Regional on Saturday at noon. If the Tar Heels win, their ticket to Omaha will be punched. If they lose, they will play a win-or-go-home Game 3 on Monday.

John Mateer, Oklahoma release statements on sports gambling rumors

Late Monday evening, screenshots of a Venmo account surfaced that suggested Oklahoma Sooners quarterback John Mateer had allegedly engaged in sports gambling. Tuesday morning, Pete Thamel of ESPN reported that the University of Oklahoma was aware of the rumors but Mateer "consistently denied" the rumors. The Venmo account in question appears to belong to Mateer, as transactions went to former Washington State teammates, offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, and a family member, according to The Oklahoman. Mateer released a statement via social media denying that the transactions were involved in sports gambling. "The allegations that I once participated in sports gambling are false," Mateer shared via X, formerly known as Twitter. "My previous Venmo descriptions did not accurately portray the transactions in question but were instead inside jokes between me and my friends. I have never bet on sports. I understand the seriousness of the matter, but recognize that, taken out of context, these Venmo descriptions suggest otherwise. I can assure my teammates, coaches, and officials at the NCAA that I have not engaged in sports gambling." The University of Oklahoma released the following statement. "OU Athletics provides ongoing education to its student-athletes, coaches, and staff on matters related to sports gambling," the statement read. "The department utilizes ProhiBet, which is an industry-standard service offering comprehensive monitoring of sports gambling activities. OU takes any allegations of gambling seriously and works closely with the NCAA in any situations of concern. OU Athletics is unaware of any NCAA investigation and has no reason to believe there is one pending." Though there isn't an NCAA investigation into the matter at the moment, that doesn't mean that the NCAA couldn't or won't look into the transactions made by Mateer in his Venmo account. However, at the moment, it appears OU is satisfied with Mateer's explanation of the matter. Oklahoma QB John Mateer releases statement on gambling allegations

Just over two and a half weeks from Week 1, the Oklahoma Sooners and their new transfer quarterback, John Mateer, have found themselves dealing with a headache brought on by off-the-field allegations. Mateer, the Sooners' new QB transfer from Washington State, was the center of social media posts that alluded to his Venmo transaction history, which had commentary indicating potential sports betting. In a response, John Mateer took to his official X account to deny the allegations and provide context that the payment commentary was a joke between him and his friends. "The allegations that I once participated in sports gambling are false. My previous Venmo descriptions did not accurately portray the transaction in question but were instead inside jokes between me and my friends. I have never bet on sports. I understand the seriousness of the matter, but recognize that, taken out of context, those Venmo descriptions suggest otherwise. I can assure my teammates, coaches, and officials at the NCAA that I have not engaged in any sports gambling," Mateer's post read. The Oklahoma Sooners open up the 2025 season on Saturday, Aug. 30, when they welcome in FCS opponent, the Illinois State Redbirds, for kickoff at 6 p.m. ET. Al Golden dedicates his acceptance of the 2024 Broyles Award to Marcus Freeman, Notre Dame

Al Golden may no longer be directing the defense in South Bend, but the former Notre Dame coordinator has not forgotten about the Fighting Irish. The now-Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator was greeted by representatives from the Broyles Award on Sunday, and he dedicated his acceptance of the 2024 Broyles Award (given to the nation's top assistant) to Fighting Irish head coach Marcus Freeman, the entire 2024 ND football team and all of the coaches he has worked with in the past. "Other than being called 'dad,' being called 'coach' is the greatest thing in the world, right?," Golden asked. Class act by a class guy.
