MyCIF surpasses RM1bil co-investment mark

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia Co-Investment Fund (MyCIF) total co-investments have reached RM1.19 billion as of end-2024 since its inception, with RM264 million invested in 2024 alone.
MyCIF said it has attracted 4.1 times in private sector funding for every ringgit invested, demonstrating a strong crowding-in effect, which led to a 21.4 per cent increase in total private investment.
"The RM1.19 billion in total co-investments by MyCIF represent 4.6 times the RM260 million in total funds disbursed by the government to date into the programme, demonstrating efficient use of public funds," it said in a statement today.
Set up by the Ministry of Finance (MoF) under Budget 2019, MyCIF has played a pivotal role in the financing landscape by utilising equity crowdfunding (ECF) and peer-to-peer (P2P) financing platforms to channel funds into micro, small and medium enterprises.
In addition to the general scheme 1:4 co-investment, MyCIF continues to support strategic and underserved segments of the economy through targeted schemes, including food security and environmental and social enterprise initiatives with a preferential 1:2 co-investment ratio.
Co-investments in these segments rose to RM7 million in 2024 from RM3.4 million in 2023, reflecting MyCIF's strengthened commitment to targeted investment areas.
Under Budget 2025, MyCIF has earmarked up to RM40 million for promoting innovative Islamic risk-sharing financing through ECF and P2P platforms, it said.
"This allocation complements existing MyCIF schemes and aims to encourage wider adoption of Islamic financing structures, based on Musharakah and Mudharabah concepts.
"It will do so by investing on a first-loss basis in ECF and P2P campaigns grounded in Islamic risk-sharing models, and additionally by offering zero per cent financing rates for selected P2P campaigns," it added. - Bernama

SC's next capital market roadmap to power up green investments, align with 13MP, NETR

KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — The Securities Commission Malaysia's (SC) upcoming Capital Market Masterplan 4 (CMP4) will align with current national priorities, including the 13th Malaysia Plan, the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and other government economic initiatives. SC chairman Datuk Mohammad Faiz Azmi said this will give momentum to capital mobilisation for transition, adaptation and climate resilience financing. 'We hope to increase the amount of green investments to support our energy transition and to help prepare for a hotter future,' he said in his welcoming address at the Eco-Business Conference 2025 today. Mohammad Faiz had previously highlighted that this year, the SC will begin the process of shaping views and insights over the long term, including vision and objectives, in developing CMP4, which succeeds CMP3 (2021-2025). At the same event, he said the National Sustainability Reporting Framework (NSRF) was launched in September 2024 to ensure consistent and comparable sustainability reporting by corporate Malaysia and to align with the IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards issued by the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB). 'Our efforts have already earned Malaysia international recognition by the IFRS Foundation for being one of the first adopters of the ISSB standards in Asean. 'This year marks the first phase of NSRF implementation involving large Main Market issuers above RM2 billion in market capitalisation — some 130 companies — and we will see the fruits of their work next year when the annual reports are finalised for 2025,' he added. — Bernama

Tourism agency association: Protests could tarnish Malaysia's image, impact Visit Malaysia year

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia Tourism Agency Association (Mata) has expressed its concern over the impact of street demonstrations, particularly in the lead-up to Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026), as they could threaten public security and tarnish the country's reputation as a safe tourism destination. It said that with Malaysia actively promoting VM2026 to attract millions of international visitors, such continued large-scale public demonstrations could hinder those efforts. "A tarnished national image can directly affect tourist arrivals and foreign investments. Demonstrations can affect business operations and employment opportunities, and increase the overall cost of living for the people. The people's peace and safety are priorities that cannot be compromised," it said in a statement today. Mata also warned that mobilising the people to take to the streets posed a security risk, including potential provocation, conflicts and disorders that could threaten public order. It also said that Malaysia, known as a destination for Islamic and nature-based tourism, would face huge challenges if street demonstrations continue and receive negative media exposure globally. Meanwhile, Mata president Datuk Sri Dr Mohd Khalid Harun said in the same statement that Malaysia is currently in a strong post-pandemic economic recovery phase. "Stability and peace are the foundation of progress in the tourism industry. Without safety guarantees, tourists will choose other destinations, which are more stable and safer," he said. He said that Mata recognises the people's right to voice their opinions, but stressed that every action must be carried out responsibly without compromising national harmony. "We must work together to maintain stability to ensure VM2026 is successful and the people's economy continues to grow," he said.
