Every 2025 Kentucky Derby horse name, ranked
The 2025 Kentucky Derby is coming later in the week, so you're probably searching for betting advice as we get ready for the horses to race at Churchill Downs.
But I'm going to be the bearer of some bad news: while we'll have some betting advice later this week, this isn't that post.
No, this is the post that we've done in the past seven years, in which we rank the thoroughbreds by the horse names, which will help all you casual bettors out there.
KENTUCKY DERBY MORNING LINE ODDS: Every horse's opening odds this week
What's the criteria? It's a very unscientific combination of originality, prestige and whether it sounds like the kind of name that shows how tough and resilient a horse is to win the Run for the Roses.
Let's go from worst to best:
20. Neoequos
I'm having trouble saying it out loud. Too many vowels.
19. Luxor Cafe
It sounds like one of those restaurants that's trying to be all fancy, but is, in fact, a tourist trap.
18. Tiztastic
Tiz not great.
17. Citizen Bull
This is not a cow race. This is a horse race. If it was Citizen Stallion, I'd bump it up a few spots.
16. Coal Battle
Too dependent on coal. Come back to me when it's Solar Battle.
15. Sandman
Too sleepy to win.
14. Owen Almighty
No Bruce or Evan Almighty?
13. Admire Daytona
Not the worst, but does sound like a bad marketing slogan for Daytona Beach.
12. Burnham Square
Makes me think of Bo Burnham, who is funny.
11. American Promise
There are better horse names on this list.
10. East Avenue
I grew up on a street with a name similar to this one. Personal bias counts here!
9. Rodriguez
Named for Sixto Rodriguez, the singer. That gets some points here.
8. Grande
Ariana Grande is good too.
7. Chunk of Gold
We're getting closer to "sounds like a good Kentucky Derby horse name."
6. Final Gambit
Same with this one. Very thoroughbred-y.
5. Flying Mohawk
Sounds more like a WWE finishing move, but whatever, this is a really good one.
4. Render Judgement
Great name from the horse owned by the late Toby Keith. Feels god-like.
3. Sovereignty
Royalty. So good.
2. Publisher
You'll see where I'm going with this in a sec.
1. Journalism
If there's a time we need journalism and publishers to finish at the top, it's now (see? Told you there's personal bias!).

Bobby Flay Gushes Over New Girlfriend Brooke Williamson
Food Network star Bobby Flay opened up about his new girlfriend, Brooke Williamson. On his Instagram story on May 15, 2025, Flay was asked by a fan, 'If you had to compete as a team, who would you choose as your teammate?' He responded, according to People, 'I'll take @chefbrookew. I know our food would get an upgrade in terms of presentation. She makes delicious food, but it's always pretty too (like her).' Williamson shared the post to her own page. The story is no longer visible on either page. On May 2, Williamson shared a video on her Instagram page that shows her at the Kentucky Derby with Flay. According to Us Weekly, Flay has been married three times. Williamson is also divorced, the magazine reported. Willamson is the Top Chef Season 14 winner, according to Us Weekly, and she stars with Flay in his show Bobby's Triple Threat. A new season of the latter show is coming on July 9, according to Food Network. "Only the most-elite chefs will enter Bobby's secret kitchen to face off against acclaimed chef-titans Brooke Williamson, Michael Voltaggio and Tiffany Derry in a triple threat throwdown," the page says. "Brooke is a seasonal chef born and raised in California. Her food is always fresh and evolving, and her signature California-inspired cuisine has earned her worldwide acclaim," the channel's bio for Williamson says. "At the age of only 22, she was the youngest female chef ever to cook at the James Beard House, and her one-two punch flavor and finesse has her feared at every culinary arena she enters," it adds.

Sovereignty Beats Journalism to Win Belmont Stakes at Saratoga
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—Sovereignty outran Journalism on Saturday in a Kentucky Derby rematch in the 157th Belmont Stakes at Saratoga Race Course, the race once again showcasing the best in horse racing. Like last year, it featured the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winners. However, unlike last year and for the first time since 2018, one of those two won to secure two of the three legs of the Triple Crown.

2025 Belmont Stakes predictions, picks: Back Sovereignty to win
The Belmont Stakes wraps up several weeks of prestigious horse races, and I have a wager for Saturday's event. If you are looking for an assist regarding how to throw down a couple of bucks on the ponies come the weekend, I have you covered. Journalism and Sovereignty will face off once again. Who will come out on top? Let's dive into it. Win, Place and Show result Although Journalism has been the stronger horse overall — winning five of his seven career starts, including the Preakness Stakes — I like Sovereignty to win the Belmont Stakes and pull off the rare Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes wins in the same year. Sovereignty is well-rested after skipping the Preakness to focus on this race. His closing ability was evident in the Derby, where he rallied from 16th all the way to the roses. The shorter distance of this show should benefit Sovereignty over Journalism, who needed an amazing run in the final 3/16 to win the Preakness. My pick is Sovereignty. PICK: Sovereignty to win, Journalism to place, Baeza to show Geoff Schwartz is an NFL analyst for FOX Sports. He played eight seasons in the NFL for five different teams.
