Every 2025 Kentucky Derby horse name, ranked
The 2025 Kentucky Derby is coming later in the week, so you're probably searching for betting advice as we get ready for the horses to race at Churchill Downs.
But I'm going to be the bearer of some bad news: while we'll have some betting advice later this week, this isn't that post.
No, this is the post that we've done in the past seven years, in which we rank the thoroughbreds by the horse names, which will help all you casual bettors out there.
KENTUCKY DERBY MORNING LINE ODDS: Every horse's opening odds this week
What's the criteria? It's a very unscientific combination of originality, prestige and whether it sounds like the kind of name that shows how tough and resilient a horse is to win the Run for the Roses.
Let's go from worst to best:
20. Neoequos
I'm having trouble saying it out loud. Too many vowels.
19. Luxor Cafe
It sounds like one of those restaurants that's trying to be all fancy, but is, in fact, a tourist trap.
18. Tiztastic
Tiz not great.
17. Citizen Bull
This is not a cow race. This is a horse race. If it was Citizen Stallion, I'd bump it up a few spots.
16. Coal Battle
Too dependent on coal. Come back to me when it's Solar Battle.
15. Sandman
Too sleepy to win.
14. Owen Almighty
No Bruce or Evan Almighty?
13. Admire Daytona
Not the worst, but does sound like a bad marketing slogan for Daytona Beach.
12. Burnham Square
Makes me think of Bo Burnham, who is funny.
11. American Promise
There are better horse names on this list.
10. East Avenue
I grew up on a street with a name similar to this one. Personal bias counts here!
9. Rodriguez
Named for Sixto Rodriguez, the singer. That gets some points here.
8. Grande
Ariana Grande is good too.
7. Chunk of Gold
We're getting closer to "sounds like a good Kentucky Derby horse name."
6. Final Gambit
Same with this one. Very thoroughbred-y.
5. Flying Mohawk
Sounds more like a WWE finishing move, but whatever, this is a really good one.
4. Render Judgement
Great name from the horse owned by the late Toby Keith. Feels god-like.
3. Sovereignty
Royalty. So good.
2. Publisher
You'll see where I'm going with this in a sec.
1. Journalism
If there's a time we need journalism and publishers to finish at the top, it's now (see? Told you there's personal bias!).

‘He's Got The Potential': Owen Almighty Gears Up For Fall Campaign
'He's Got The Potential': Owen Almighty Gears Up For Fall Campaign originally appeared on Paulick Report. Unraced since finishing fifth in the Kentucky Derby, Grade 3 Tampa Bay Derby winner Owen Almighty is gearing up for an autumn campaign, reports Rankin, president of Flying Dutchmen, said on the BloodHorse Monday podcast that the colt could make his return to the races in the Robert Hilton Memorial Stakes on the Charles Town Classic undercard on Aug. 22, or the G1 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 23. Both races are seven furlongs with a $500,000 purse, although the Robert Hilton Memorial Stakes is around two turns."Either place, I know he'll give us everything he's got. He always does," Rankin said on the BloodHorse Monday podcast. "We just want to get him started back on the right foot and get him geared up for a fall campaign. I still believe he's got the potential to be a very good 4-year-old."A son of Speightstown, the Brian Lynch trainee has three wins and two seconds in eight starts. Big Truzz, another top 3-year-old on the Flying Dutchmen roster, could make his next start in the G1 Pennsylvania Derby on Sept. 20 after a seven-length romp in the Ellis Park Derby on Aug. 10, Rankin said on the more at This story was originally reported by Paulick Report on Aug 13, 2025, where it first appeared.

Sandman Breezes On Turf At Saratoga, Aimed For Nashville Derby
Sandman Breezes On Turf At Saratoga, Aimed For Nashville Derby originally appeared on Paulick Report. D.J. Stable, St. Elias Stable, West Point Thoroughbreds and CJ Stables' Grade 1 winner Sandman breezed over Saratoga Race Course's Oklahoma training turf on Sunday in his first foray over the grass, covering a half-mile solo in :49.70. Piloted through the work by Jose Ortiz, who rode the colt to his victory in the Arkansas Derby (G1) in March at Oaklawn Park, Sandman skipped along the turf without being asked and came through the lane strongly before an extended gallop-out. Trainer Mark Casse said he was more than pleased with the effort, which was Sandman's first breeze since finishing a disappointing last-of-5 in the Jim Dandy (G2) on July 26 won by dual classic winner Sovereignty. 'I was very happy with him, and more importantly, he was very happy. He was like a kid in a candy store,' Casse said, with a smile. 'Jose and I had talked about it before. He said especially in the Jim Dandy, when you ask him to go, he kind of scrambles. He doesn't have the turn-of-foot, and that's why he relies on others to do his dirty work. If they don't do it, he's not going to run good. That's why he didn't run well in the Jim Dandy – the pace was too slow, and he couldn't catch them. Plus, really good horses. 'Turf horses, when you ask them to go, they can accelerate, and I had told Jose – I hadn't planned on Jose breezing him today, but I said, 'I just want you to let him drop his head and see if he wants to do something just the last eighth of a mile,'' Casse continued. 'He said to me, 'I never even had to ask him. I just sat there.' Then it was more about trying to pull him up. We weren't looking for speed.' Ortiz agreed that Sandman was enjoying himself on the grass. 'He worked good and Mark was looking for an easy half, so that's what we tried to do,' Ortiz said. 'He feels good.' With a successful first breeze over the turf now on his resume, Sandman, who finished third in the Preakness (G1) after a closing seventh in the Kentucky Derby (G1), is likely headed to Kentucky Downs for the $3.5-million Nashville Derby (G3) on August 30 traveling 1 5/16 miles. 'I think we can make it official – we're going to go to the Nashville Derby,' Casse concluded. 'The only way we weren't doing that is if I wasn't happy today. I've never seen Jose so excited. A mile and five sixteenths for three-and-a-half million – that's where we're going. I would have been shocked and disappointed if he didn't get over [the turf] because every indication he's ever given me was he would like grass.' The son of Tapit was a $1.2 million purchase at last year's OBS March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training and is out of the Distorted Humor mare Distorted Music, who won one race over the Arlington Park synthetic in 2014. He is a half-brother to graded stakes-winner She Can't Sing, who was Grade 3-placed and a three-time stakes-winner on grass. Baffert Continues To Cultivate Talent At Del Mar
How does a coach continuously produce winners? Is it luck, hard work, talent levels in the ranks, execution of the gameplan, or a combination of the previously listed? Most familiar with competition understand it is usually some of all of the above. For one Thoroughbred trainer it has been all of the aforementioned plus a great garden spot that has been excellent for cultivating young horses. Bob Baffert has long been considered one of the best in the Thoroughbred racing game. Rightfully so we must add as he has had more horses cross the finish line first in the world's most famous race (7), the Kentucky Derby, trained more Preakness winners than anyone (8), has three wins in the Belmont Stakes, and has conditioned nineteen Breeders' Cup race winners. For good measure, 'Big Race Bob' also has more Grade 1 race wins (the highest level of competition) than any trainer in the game. How has this Arizona native remained at the pinnacle of the sport since beginning his Thoroughbred conditioning career in 1991? It all begins with developing his younger talent where the surf meets the turf down at old Del Mar. Nestled just north of San Diego, this piece of Thoroughbred racing heaven has been a prime location for the Baffert barn over the years. 'There are lots of things that make Del Mar a great place for our young horses', says Baffert, who has conditioned two Triple Crown winners (American Pharoah 2015, Justify 2018). 'The weather is always good and there is very little rain which is very important. You don't miss training time and that can be a big key in development. The track is always in great shape, the atmosphere is good, and it's just a great environment to be in.' Success has been synonymous with this Hall of Fame conditioner at the Seaside Oval as he has far more Stakes wins (177) at Del Mar than any other trainer. Among those are an incredible nineteen wins in the Del Mar Futurity and eleven in the Best Pal Stakes, two of the biggest races for two-year-old males at the track founded by Bing Crosby in 1937. 'Our program puts a lot of emphasis on developing young horses', says Baffert. 'We believe in doing it the right way. Some come around quicker than others. Each horse has to be handled a little differently because like any athlete, some develop quicker mentally and physically than others. Being patient is very important with all of them. Authentic is a good example of a horse we didn't run at Del Mar in the summer of his two-year-old year because he just was not ready. At three he won the Kentucky Derby and the Breeders' Cup Classic.' Developing young talent with works and races at Del Mar every summer has long been a staple of his team's success throughout the last three plus decades. Even though he is the man with the lineup card and pencil, Baffert points to other components as mainstays for his team's success. 'I am very fortunate to have clients that want to run in and win stakes races', says Baffert. 'They give me the freedom to pick the horses we purchase and buying the right horses is where it all begins. Our goal is always to run in the biggest races across the entire country and go in with a real chance to win. Having great people around me and backing me is most important. And it also is fantastic to get those young horses going at a great place like Del Mar.' The Bob Baffert barn will send two runners to post in the grade 3 Best Pal Stakes on Saturday, August 9. St. Petersburg will break from gate 3 and Desert Gate breaks from the 5 hole in the six furlong race over the Del Mar dirt.
