A University of California, Berkeley professor was fatally shot in broad daylight in a suburb of Athens, Greece, on July 4, while visiting the country in connection with a child custody dispute.
Przemyslaw Jeziorski, aged 43, was gunned down near the home of his ex-wife by a masked assailant who fled the scene on foot.
Who was Przemyslaw Jeziorski?
Jeziorski, a Polish-born scholar, was an Associate Professor of Marketing at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley, where he also held the Egon and Joan von Kaschnitz Distinguished Professorship in Business Administration.
With over 15 years of academic experience, Jeziorski was widely regarded as a leading authority in quantitative marketing, industrial organisation, and applied microeconomics.
His research spanned diverse sectors, including mobile money in Africa, online advertising, radio broadcasting, car insurance, and public health campaigns such as breast cancer prevention.
He published extensively in leading academic journals such as Marketing Science, Management Science, and the RAND Journal of Economics. His work received support from prestigious institutions, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Jeziorski served as Associate Editor for Management Science and Quantitative Marketing and Economics, and was also on the editorial board of Marketing Science.
As an educator, Jeziorski was known for his passion and dedication, having mentored more than 1,500 MBA and PhD students at Berkeley Haas, particularly in Marketing Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, and Digital Marketing. He held a PhD in Economics from Stanford Graduate School of Business, as well as degrees in Mathematics and Economics from the University of Arizona and the Warsaw School of Economics.
'Our family is heartbroken': Brother
His brother, Lukasz Jeziorski, posted a message on the European crowdfunding platform WhyDonate, stating, 'Our family is heartbroken, and we are doing everything we can to ensure that justice is served. Przemek was a loving father to two young children and a beloved professor at UC Berkeley. He loved teaching and sharing his passion with students.'
Funds are being raised to support legal proceedings, repatriation of Jeziorski's remains, and related expenses.
The professor's ex-wife, who returned to Greece six years ago, reportedly told police she had no knowledge of anyone who would want to harm him, according to Greek news outlet Zougla.
Berkeley Haas Dean, Jennifer Chatman, expressed deep sorrow in a statement to ABC7 News: 'We are heartbroken by the tragic and sudden death of Professor Przemyslaw Jeziorski, a beloved member of our marketing faculty and the Haas community. While authorities are continuing their investigation, our focus is on supporting our students, staff, and faculty during this incredibly difficult time. My heart goes out to Przemek's family and loved ones.
We will miss him dearly.'
Greek authorities are actively investigating the murder. No arrests have yet been made.

Russia launches a major aerial attack on Kyiv hours before high-level talks on support for Ukraine
Russia unleashed one of its largest aerial assaults on Ukraine in recent months, only hours before the U.K. and Germany chaired a meeting to discuss U.S. President Donald Trump's plans for NATO allies to provide Ukraine with weapons. The attack killed two persons and wounded 15, including a 12-year-old, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. In Kyiv's Shevchenkivskyi district, a drone struck the entrance to a subway station where people had taken cover. Videos posted on social media showed the station platform engulfed by smoke, with dozens of people inside. Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klitschko said the station had to be ventilated in what he called an 'enhanced mode.' The heaviest strikes hit Kyiv's Darnytskyi district, where a kindergarten, supermarket and warehouse facilities caught fire. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot arrived in Kyiv on Monday and visited some of the damage. The hours-long drone and missile assault on Kyiv overnight into Monday underscored the urgency of Ukraine's need for further Western military aid, especially in air defence, a week after Mr. Trump said deliveries would arrive in Ukraine within days. The virtual meeting of high-level military officials on Monday was led by British Defence Secretary John Healey and his German counterpart Boris Pistorius. U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and NATO leader Mark Rutte, as well as NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, attended the meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group. Moscow has intensified its long-range attacks on Ukrainian cities, and analysts say the barrages are likely to escalate as Russian drone production expands. NATO's Grynkewich said on Thursday that 'preparations are underway' for weapons transfers to Ukraine while U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker said he couldn't give a time frame. Germany has said it offered to finance two new Patriot systems for Ukraine and raised the possibility of supplying systems it already owns and having them replaced by the U.S. But delivery could take time, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz suggested, because 'they have to be transported, they have to be set up; that is not a question of hours, it is a question of days, perhaps weeks." Other Patriot systems could come thanks to Switzerland, whose defense ministry said Thursday it was informed by the U.S. Defense Department that it will 'reprioritize the delivery" of five previously ordered systems to support Ukraine. While Ukraine waits for Patriots, a senior NATO official said the alliance is still coordinating the delivery of other military aid — such as ammunition and artillery rounds — which includes aid from the U.S. that was briefly paused. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive matters. Zelenskyy said Saturday that his officials have proposed a new round of peace talks this week. The overnight Russian barrage of Kyiv began shortly after midnight and continued until around 6 a.m. Residents of the capital were kept awake by machine-gun fire, buzzing drone engines and multiple loud explosions. It was the first major attack on Kyiv since Trump's special envoy to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, arrived in the city last Monday. Russia halted strikes on Kyiv during his visit. Russia's Ministry of Defense said its attack used drones and Kinzhal hypersonic missiles. It said that the barrage successfully targeted airfield infrastructure and Ukraine's military-industrial complex. Ukraine's air force said Russia launched 426 Shahed and decoy drones overnight Monday, as well as 24 missiles of various types. It said 200 drones were intercepted with 203 more jammed or lost from radars. Ukraine, meanwhile, continued to deploy its domestically produced long-range drones. Russia's Ministry of Defense said that its forces shot down 74 Ukrainian drones overnight, with almost a third of them destroyed close to the Russian capital. Microsoft looks to boost AI performance in European languages
Paris: US tech behemoth Microsoft is investing millions of dollars to funnel more European-language data into AI development, company president Brad Smith told AFP Monday. With today's leading AI models mostly trained on material in English, "the survival of these languages and the health of these cultures is quite literally at stake" without a course correction, Smith said in an interview. AI models are "less capable when it is in a language that has insufficient data," he added -- which could push more users to switch to English even when it is not their native language. Microsoft will from September set up research units in the eastern French city Strasbourg to "help expand the availability of multilingual data for AI development" in at least 10 of the European Union's 24 languages, including Estonian and Greek. The work will include digitising books and recording hundreds of hours of audio. "This isn't about creating data for Microsoft to own. It is about creating data for the public to be able to use," Smith said, adding that the information would be shared on an open-source basis. The US-based company has in recent months striven to position itself as especially compatible with a gathering political push for European technological sovereignty. Leaders in the bloc have grown increasingly nervous at their dependency on US tech firms and infrastructure since Donald Trump's reelection to the White House. In June, Microsoft said it was stepping up cooperation with European governments on cybersecurity and announced new " data sovereignty " measures for its data centers on the continent. Smith said that Monday's announcement was just the latest evidence of the company's commitment to Europe. Most leading AI firms are American or Chinese, although Europe has some standouts like France's Mistral or Franco-American platform Hugging Face. Away from Microsoft, some European initiatives such as TildeLM are pushing to develop local-language AI models. The Windows and Office developer also said Monday that it was working on a digital recreation of Paris' Notre-Dame cathedral that it plans to gift to the French state, as well as digitising items from the country's BNF national library and Decorative Arts Museum.
