Kerala Court Summons Priyanka Gandhi On Plea Challenging Her Election From Wayanad

NDTV4 days ago

Kochi:
The Kerala High Court has issued summons to AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on a plea challenging her election from the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in the bypoll held there last year.
Justice K Babu passed the order while admitting a plea by her then rival BJP candidate Navya Haridas who had claimed that the Congress leader had not correctly disclosed her and family's assets in the nomination papers and provided "false information" which is against the Model Code of Conduct and amounts to a corrupt practice.
Haridas, who had lost to Vadra by over five lakh votes in the bypoll, said that the Congress leader's response has been sought in the matter.
The petition will be heard next on August 11, the court said.
The BJP leader's plea has sought setting aside of Ms Vadra's election for allegedly "suppressing vital information about the various assets owned by her and her family", and "misguiding, misinforming and keeping the voters in the dark with the intention of influencing their choice".
Ms Vadra had scored her maiden electoral victory from the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in the bypoll held there on November 13, 2024 by getting 6,22,338 votes. Her rival, Haridas, came third with 1,09,939 votes.

Don't fall for monetary offers to switch sides, stay united: Uddhav to party workers

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday asked his party cadre not to fall prey to monetary offers for switching sides and appealed to them to stay united for the sake of Mumbai. The comments come ahead of the polls to various local and civic bodies in Maharashtra, including the cash-rich Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), likely to be held later this year. The Shiv Sena split in June 2022 after a rebellion led by Eknath Shinde and resulted in the collapse of the then Thackeray-headed Maha Vikas Aghadi government. Those who want to finish off Uddhav Thackeray and Shiv Sena have only business angle in mind. They want to sell off Mumbai and hand it over to corporates," the source quoted Thackeray as saying. "Those who are falling prey to monetary considerations don't understand that they are being used and will be thrown away later," the former chief minister said. He asked the shakha pramukhs to reach out to people in all the 227 wards of the BMC, strengthen the grassroot network and connect with the people, the source said. AAP leader Sonia Mann urges Congress to support government action against drug trafficking in Punjab

LUDHIANA: Responding to Congress leader Alka Lamba 's "statement" on the drug issue in Punjab , Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sonia Mann countered by saying that the role of the opposition is not just to criticise the govt but also to "acknowledge" and appreciate its "good work". Sonia Mann said that for the "first time", a govt in Punjab is taking such "massive action" against drug traffickers. 'Anti-drug committees have been formed in every village, and large-scale awareness campaigns are being conducted. This deserves praise, but it is unfortunate that opposition leaders are resorting to petty politics even on an issue like drugs,' she claimed. Sonia Mann further added that during Congress's tenure, several ministers and MLAs were themselves accused of being involved in drug trafficking. 'Alka Lamba should say something about that as well, and she should question Punjab Congress President Raja Warring on why he is advocating for opening opium theke, which would only encourage drug use,' she remarked. She alleged that the Congress and Akali govts "promoted" drug use in Punjab by providing political patronage to traffickers. 'This resulted in the destruction of thousands of families, with countless parents losing their children and many children becoming orphans. In contrast, the AAP govt is taking strict action against drug traffickers, sending them to jail, and demolishing their illegal properties. This has created a significant fear among drug traffickers,' Mann claimed. She urged Congress leaders to support the govt's "efforts" to rid Punjab of drugs as quickly as possible, instead of "politicising" the issue.
