WWE Raw takeaways: Seth Rollins, Penta qualify for Money in the Bank
WWE Monday Night Raw on May 26 took place at Yuengling Center in Tampa, Fla., and featured a Money in the Bank qualifier between Seth Rollins, Sami Zayn and Finn Balor.
This week's episode saw a couple of solid promos with Jey Uso and Gunther, and then Lyra Valkyria and Becky Lynch. Sheamus looks to be setting up a feud with Rusev after coming to Akira Tozawa's aid.
Check out the top takeaways from this episode:
Paul Heyman, Seth Rollins put over new faction
Kicking off the show was the new-look faction led by Seth Rollins. Along with Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed, Paul Heyman took the mic to put the group over as only Heyman could. He predicted – no, spoiled - that Breakker would headline multiple WrestleMania events in the future, and gave credit to Reed for taking out CM Punk. After giving the hard sell, Heyman demanded acknowledgment of Rollins before passing over the mic.
As Rollins began speaking, the Tampa crowd chanted, "You sold out." Rollins was confused, asking who did he sell out to other than himself? The next chant prompted censors. "F*ck you, Rollins," filled the arena. Once again, Rollins questioned the crowd, reminding them just a minute ago they were all singing his song during walk to the ring.
Rollins vowed to not only qualify for Money in the Bank, but win it, in order to hold "total power" over the champions until he decides to eventually cash in to secure the future of the industry.
I was hoping we would get a name for the new faction here, but that wasn't the case. Rollins did refer to the group as "the vision," which would actually make for a dope name. Run with it, WWE. I'm sure Marvel won't come knocking on legal's door. All-in-all, this was a solid opening segment – no run-ins, got right to the point, and that was it.
Penta qualifies for Money in the Bank
The first match of the show was a triple threat MITB qualifier between Penta, Chad Gable and Dragon Lee.
Since Gable has made it his current mission to dispatch of all luchadors, Penta and Lee made a temporary alliance to take out Gable. The alliance was very temporary, and then things started to heat up as bodies started flying everywhere.
Penta caught both Lee and Gable in a ridiculous two-for-one move that looked nasty for Gable. A few moments later after regaining momentum, Gable decided to take a swipe at Vikingo, who was sitting in the crowd by the commentary desk. This would come back to haunt him later, as Vikingo jumped the barrier to knock Gable off the top turnbuckle.
The finishing sequence was amazing as Penta hit a Mexican destroyer on Lee, followed by a Penta bomb on Gable to qualify for MITB.
This match was fantastic. With Worlds Collide right around the corner, and the match between Vikingo and Gable already set, their interactions here just made sense. The right man won, making the men's MITB field even stronger.
New Day retain tag titles in triple threat
The New Day's tag team titles were on the line in a triple threat match against War Raiders and American Made's Creed Brothers.
With seeds of an alliance planted in prior weeks, this match largely came down to War Raiders against the champs and the Creeds. It was a fun watch, but in the end, the team-up ceased when the New Day was ready to finish the match.
Out of nowhere, Xavier Woods rolled up Julius Creed after he launched himself into Ivar, who was perched on the top turnbuckle. The Creeds were stunned that they were betrayed by the heel champs.
It's triple threat season, apparently. While it was nice to see these teams get some work in, it didn't feel like a spot where the New Day would drop the titles – and they didn't.
Liv Morgan returns, loses to Kairi Sane
Just as Roxanne Perez attempted to put another twinkle in Dominik Mysterio's eye with a platter of chicken nuggets and a shoulder rub, things abruptly stopped when Mysterio caught a glimpse of Liv Morgan walking in. Morgan went away for a few weeks to film a movie, and another girl attempted to make a move on Mysterio. Whether he asked for it or not, Mysterio finds himself in the dog house with Morgan.
Later backstage, Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez crossed paths with IYO SKY and Kairi Sane. Morgan had a few digs to issue out, prompting a response from Sane, who challenged her to a match.
Morgan and Sane went at it in the ring later in the show. The match started off with a few stiff shots from both, but Morgan gained the upper hand early. Morgan even bombed Sane to the floor from the ring apron. Things weren't looking great for Sane, but she got back on track.
Sane went to the top rope to attempt her finishing elbow, but while the referee was distracted, she was pushed off by Roxanne Perez, who ran in from the crowd. Even though she helped Morgan, Rodriguez didn't appreciate Perez's actions. While the two argued, Morgan attempted her finisher, but was reversed and rolled up for the pin.
SOUND THE ALARM! Kairi Sane won a singles match on TV! It's been literal years since that happened. Her social media post after the match said it all:
It wouldn't be Judgment Day without internal problems, and Finn Balor is sure loving the girls drama he created by welcoming in Perez.
Seth Rollins qualifies for Money in the Bank
The main event of this week's episode was a MITB qualifier between Seth Rollins, Sami Zayn and Finn Balor – easily the most stacked qualifier on paper for this year's PLE.
"This is awesome" chants poured in after Zayn hit a superplex on Balor, which was immediately followed by a Rollins frog splash to Zayn. Rollins then attempted to start a team-up with Balor to take out Zayn, but Zayn was quick to counter their effort.
Balor gained finishing momentum by looking for a Coup de Grace to Zayn, but missed it. Rollins immediately hit him with a stomp, but Zayn nailed Rollins with a Helluva Kick. The pin was there, but then Bron Breakker appeared to pull Zayn off. Bronson Reed attacked too. Jey Uso appeared from the crowd, and a melee on the outside ensued.
Dominik Mysterio appeared too, and slid a chair to Balor in the ring, but Rollins stomped him into it. Three count for Rollins to qualify for MITB. After the match, CM Punk's music hit. Breakker and Reed went toward the entrance to cut off Punk, but he ran in from the crowd to blindside Rollins with a GTS and scampered away.
Rollins winning was always the right play here, especially with the formation of the new faction. This also means that Breakker and Reed will find a way to assist in the MITB match, adding more faces to what will already be a wild match. This main event didn't need all of the interference, but it also somewhat helped to protect Zayn and Balor in their loss.

Goldberg Provides Concerning Update Ahead Of WWE Retirement Match

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg is navigating an intense and challenging preparation for his final match under the WWE banner, providing candid updates on his CarCast podcast. He revealed he knows the undisclosed date for his 2025 retirement but is facing significant physical hurdles at age 58. "I know the date (of my retirement match). No one else knows the date public-wise," Goldberg stated (H/T to Fightful). He described the unique undertaking: "And so, at my age, you obviously have to do a lot of different things to get yourself prepared for what I'm about to embark upon... it's uncharted water because not many people my age have done this." His goal is to deliver a performance true to his legacy. "I'm not just showing up to show up. I need to show up and be me and I've tapped into me a little bit more as of late." However, the path has been fraught with difficulties. "...my training, with all injuries and with my age, it makes it extremely difficult to get prepared without going overboard... I hurt myself a couple times in the past three months. But, I pulled back," he admitted. Goldberg emphasized the struggle to balance his warrior mentality with his body's current limitations, especially during Muay Thai training. "It's really tough to have the mentality I do but to have the body that I do now, with the mileage on it... There's a huge balance." LAS VEGAS, NV - JULY 08: Bill Goldberg speaks at the roundtable panel during HISTORY's Live Event 'Evel Live' at Omnia Nightclub at Caesars Palace on July 8, 2018 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Despite the toughness, there have been positive moments. "I've been in the ring a couple times. I'm gonna get in the ring again today and it's just tough... Me doing that right there, that was the first day that I felt really good," he shared. Goldberg also discussed the "unrealistic" high bar he sets for himself and the challenges of gaining "good weight." "I eat eight times a day... I was almost up to 270 and I had to back off because I could not function. I felt horrible," he recounted, explaining he has since adjusted his diet. He is determined to impress in his farewell. "Man, I'm never gonna be the way that I used to be by any stretch of the imagination. But dammit, for a 58-year-old guy, I'm gonna be in some seriously awesome shape and I'm gonna freak some people out I believe," Goldberg stated. More news: WWE News: Steve Austin Reveals Real-Life Vince McMahon Confrontation He even hinted at a potential change to his iconic ring attire: "I'm terrified to put those underwear, those trunks on again. I may even go with different kind of trunks, for the only time in my life." The WWE legend is also managing existing injuries. "I'm extremely limited because of my left knee. I can't run... it hurts," he said, noting he uses a sprint bike for cardio. He's also rehabbing a right shoulder that has troubled him for five years: "Hell, I'm working around my shoulder that... six months ago, I couldn't do this (lift my arm). I'm pretty strong now... I haven't been able to use my arm for five years... and I've had to retrain myself to do the normal, daily things." Goldberg's final WWE match is widely expected to take place "in the South," with considerable speculation pointing to the Saturday Night's Main Event on July 12, 2025, at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia—a city with deep personal and professional ties for him. ‘Twelve Moons' Debuts First-Look Clip Ahead of Tribeca Premiere, Director Victoria Franco Speaks About Societal Pressures on Women (EXCLUSIVE)

'Twelve Moons,' the feature debut of Mexican filmmaker Victoria Franco, premieres on Saturday in the International Narrative Competition of Tribeca Festival. Variety debuts an exclusive first clip from the film and speaks to the director. The film stars acclaimed Mexican actor Ana de la Reguera, whose career bridges Hollywood and Latin American cinema, alongside Ariel Award winner Enrique Arreola. Filmmaker Michel Franco, Victoria's brother, is a producer on the film, and the Match Factory is handling international sales. As she struggles with her fertility and identity as a woman, both her personal and professional life begin to deteriorate forcing her to look inward to find the light that will lead her forward. In the clip, we see that Sofia has an issue with alcohol consumption, and in the film, we discover she is also a drug user. 'For me, it's really important to portray people who don't feel comfortable with social conventions,' Franco says. 'There are many people who don't feel that they are part of society but feel societal pressure. And as a woman, there is the added pressure to have a child, have a family, be the perfect woman, and I really admire people who are really authentic and don't give in to these pressures.' Sofia is portrayed with empathy and her alcohol and drug dependency should be seen as a 'disease,' Franco says. It is Sofia's way of relaxing when faced with societal expectations and the pressure to conform – to feel 'normal,' overcome her insecurity, and appear self-confident. Unable to conceive, Sofia's life – both personal and professional – starts to unravel. 'She has no boundaries, so she doesn't know how to separate her professional and personal life, and she takes them both so seriously,' the director says. 'She feels that through her architecture, her feelings can become connected with other people. She tries to work in a way that is parallel to her feelings. Architecture is very important in this film, because I portray many places that are representing her feelings through their architecture.' Franco describes Sofia as an 'ethical' architect who tries to create buildings that encourage a feeling of freedom in those who inhabit them. We see her visiting buildings in Mexico City that exemplify that approach, like those designed by the architect Luis Barragán. 'She fights to create spaces that allow people to have more liberty within them. There's a conversation where she's arguing about putting fewer parking lots in order to create more green spaces so people can be happier in these places. 'I love Luis Barragán, who talks about a spiritual architecture, about architecture where you can feel the connection between the space and the mind, and you can feel connected with it, and it's the architecture of silence too. He won the Pritzker Prize, and his acceptance speech was amazing. It's beautiful.' Speaking about Ana de la Reguera, Franco says: 'Ana has great presence. She has a lovely face. She's a person with a deep, deep soul. And when I talked to her about the script, I felt that she was very connected with the matter of being a woman in her 40s and the social demands that people make. 'And she's an actress who has like 20 years of experience, so I was really amazed when we were talking and playing around, like, 'Imagine the camera is here, and what would you do?,' and she was improvising and doing things that I was amazed by, because sometimes I felt that she had known the character for her entire life, like she has lived with her.' Regarding the cinematography, she comments: 'First of all, I decided that the movie should be black and white, so the spectator had no distractions with the colors, and he could be really connected with the emotions and the state of mind of the character. 'And also, the movie is about architecture as well, so it's very geometrical. We looked for many locations that were really hard to get permission to film there, but we made it. There's a beautiful fountain by Isamu Noguchi, the Japanese artist, for example. 'The cinematographer, Sergio Armstrong G., is a genius. We improvised a lot. We never felt that we were in control of everything. We played with the freedom of being in the moment and sensing where to put the camera. We didn't have a shooting list of everything, and I felt so free. If I didn't have this cinematographer, Sergio, it would be pretty difficult, because I was pretty sure of the emotional state and everything but the visual things… it was Sergio who put everything together to make the movie look like the state of mind of the character.' As in film noir, the film uses light and shade to reflect the internal landscape of the character, but there were other cinematic influences. 'Many times, I felt inspired by Italian Neo Realism, because we didn't have much budget for lighting, but with its realism sometimes the film feels like a documentary, and the camera was very, very humbled, because we didn't need so much lighting to make it look beautiful. And the shadows and the geometric forms are so important.' There are similarities to how she and her brother work, she says. 'We both film chronologically. That was very helpful, because the actress was really involved with the process of the character and the emotions, and we improvised a lot, so the script changed a lot while shooting. Michel also does that, so I believe we're similar in terms of production.' She is full of praise for her brother's contribution as a producer. 'I think he was the best producer because he really got my back, and he just cares about the creativity and the process that I wanted, and he never gave up, for example, in getting some locations. Even though we didn't have enough money, he'd fight for everything. So, it was a paradise working with him.' Next up for Franco, she says, is a film about a teenager in New York, for which she is writing the screenplay now.
