Brescia, the club that Roberto Baggio ended his career with, has license revoked for bankruptcy
Brescia owner Massimo Cellino's failure to pay back millions in debts had already resulted in the club's relegation from the second division.
Brescia finished the season one point above the relegation zone but was then hit with a four-point penalty for financial irregularities that dropped the team to the third division.
Now Brescia — which was founded 114 years ago — will likely have to form an entirely new club and restart in Serie D.
Baggio played for Brescia from 2000-2004 when the northern team was in Serie A. Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola briefly played alongside Baggio at Brescia in 2001-02.
Brescia last played in Serie A in 2019-20.

She had flown to New York a day earlier after getting cut by the Golden State Valkyries on Tuesday. When the clcok struck 5, she walked into the arena and joined her new team, the Los Angeles Sparks. It has been a rollercoaster week for the 32-year-old, who helped Belgium win the EuroBasket ttile. She skipped the celebration in Belgium to fly back to San Francisco to rejoin the Valkyries only to be waived an hour after her arrival. 'To hear 1 hour upon arrival: we have to waive you. Honestly, that stung. I understand it's business, but nothing prepares you for the loneliness that comes with getting cut,' she said on social media. 'It feels like the whole world suddenly crashes on your shoulders.' The Sparks were happy to add her, giving the team another talented guard. 'I'm so happy, so excited for her,' said Sparks guard Julie Allemand, who played on the Belgium team with Vanloo . 'First of all, happy to have her in the team. She's going to help us a lot, but happy for her because, like, the last days were crazy for her.' Allemand said she had been talking to her friend all week and had hoped the Sparks would pick her up after she was cut. She was texting with Vanloo in the final minutes leading up to her joining the team. It takes 48 hours for players to clear waivers. 'It was crazy because, like, we were in the locker room and we were waiting for her,' Allemand said. 'Like she was waiting outside.' Sparks first-year coach Lynne Roberts was thrilled to get Vanloo. In the preseason she torched the Sparks for four 3-pointers in a what felt like under 2 minutes. 'When we heard that the Valkyries had waived her, I immediately said to our GM, let's see if we can get her,' Roberts said. The coach wasn't sure how much if at all Vanloo would play against the Liberty on Thursday night. 'Safe to say, she's not familiar with the playbook quite yet,' Roberts said. Spain coach Sergio Scariolo to take over Real Madrid's basketball team after EuroBasket
MADRID (AP) — Spain coach Sergio Scariolo will take over Real Madrid's basketball team after EuroBasket, the club said Thursday. Scariolo had announcement Wednesday that he would not continue with the national team after the 24-team tournament — Europe's continental championship — ends in September. Madrid parted ways with coach Chus Mateo and said that Scariolo will arrive on a three-year contract until June 2028. 'Scariolo, one of the most prestigious coaches in world basketball, arrives at Real Madrid after a brilliant career at the helm of the Spanish national team, where he has become the most successful coach in its history,' the club said in its announcement. Scariolo helped lead Spain to eight medals: five gold (2019 World Cup, 2009 EuroBasket, 2011 EuroBasket, 2015 EuroBasket and 2022 EuroBasket), one silver (2012 London Olympics) and two bronze (2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and 2017 EuroBasket). The Italian was an assistant coach with the Toronto Raptors when it won the NBA title in the 2018-19 season. The 64-year-old Scariolo was in his second stint with Spain. He had previously coached Madrid from 1999-2002. Spain is the defending EuroBasket champion. World champion Spain routs Portugal 5-0 in their Euro 2025 opener
BERN (AP) — Esther González scored twice and world champion Spain delivered a statement of intent by routing Portugal 5-0 in their Women's European Championship opener on Thursday. The 32-year-old González became the oldest player to score for Spain, minutes before 18-year-old Vicky López became the youngest. Spain captain Alexia Putellas also scored for La Roja, showing she's ready to lead the team to success after missing Euro 2022 with a knee injury. Spain lost to eventual winner England in the quarterfinals of that tournament. 'We've been talking about how motivated we are for this (Euro) for so long, and now we had to show it. We have reason to be pleased,' Putellas told Spanish broadcaster TVE. Substitute Cristina Martin-Prieto completed the scoring with a header in stoppage time. González wasted little time before opening the scoring after 87 seconds with a flick past Inês Pereira. It quickly became apparent the Portugal goalkeeper would have a busy game. She did. Pereira did well to clear a cross but was unable to stop Mariona Caldentey giving López a tap-in minutes later. Only 24 minutes were played when the fans started a Mexican wave around the nearly 30,000-capacity Wankdorf Stadium, normally home to Swiss Super League team Young Boys.
