Bollywood actor Bhumi Pednekar and her twin sister Samiksha Pednekar launched a premium water brand, Backbay. The sisters have been reportedly working together for the last two years for the brand which has a manufacturing unit in Himachal. Talking about it, they said that the "natural mineral water" is 'completely untouched by human hands'.
Bhumi, in an interview with Business Today, shared that her water brand has been priced at ₹ 150 for a 500ml pack and ₹ 200 for a 750ml pack to ensure it is 'accessible to people.'
Her statement and brand have received mixed reactions from the internet.
Sharing the news of the brand launch, someone wrote on Reddit, 'Bhumi Pednekar thinks ₹ 200 water is 'accessible'… bless her Bollywood bubble.'
Reacting to it, a user wrote sarcastically, "I was just thinking tap water isn't doing it for me anymore. Thank you Bhumi." 'All the best to her for launching overpriced water,' read an excerpt from another user.
One more added, 'Paani kam Amul ka tetrapack zyaada lag raha hai (The packaging looks like Amul's tetra pack).'
Someone else said, 'Bless her scamming heart.'

Talking about her brand, Bhumi told CNBC-TV18, 'It is our own facility in Himachal. We have put up our own plant and we are very proud of it. And, our workforce is led by women because that's just the kind of value system we wanted to inculcate within our brand. Our capacity is 45,000 boxes a day. We have a large capacity.' 'Our packaging is specifically called Gable Top Paper packaging. We have also gone a step further and our cap is actually a bio cap,' she added.
The brand also offers flavoured sparkling water.
Bhumi also explained the price point to Business Today and shared, 'We have 2 SKUs which are 500 ml and 750 ml and as far as pricing is concerned, we have priced it at right in the middle of very expensive plastic variant and the least expensive glass variant. The plastic is up to ₹ 90 and glass goes up to ₹ 600. My 500 ml is at ₹ 150 and my 750ml is at ₹ 200. It is premium water, but we wanted to keep the pricing as such that we wanted it to be accessible to people.'
'Today, Indian customers are ready to pay that money for energy drinks, so here we are giving you a product that is something as essential and basic as water and it is good water, water that will give you the kind of hydration it is supposed to give.'
'We are Himalayan premium water. My water is full of minerals and electrolytes that are naturally occurring. We want to hit the ₹ 100 crore mark in the next four years. And 15 years down the line, we want to be in everybody's home. Our water is packed at source. It is untouched by human hands.
'It is said that by 2030 the mineral water market will reach the 3 billion dollar market. My TG is people who want clean product. And where do I see my products in future… I see them in school, corporate canteens, colleges, theaters, airport, hotels, and restaurants.' She confessed, 'Every time I see a child drink water from a plastic bottle, I just want to pull that bottle and tell him 'don't do that'. Of course, when it is absolute necessity, it is a different conversation. But this comes from a place where you have a choice and yet you choose something that is full of toxic chemicals."

With the US' reciprocal tariff of 25 per cent on India having come into effect from August 7, the Indian finance ministry has estimated that more than half of the country's merchandise exports to the US are subject to the same. 'It is estimated that around 55% of total value of India's merchandise exports to the US will be subject to this reciprocal tariff,' Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary told the Lok Sabha on Monday. In 2024, India's merchandise exports to the US totalled $87.3 billion, resulting in a trade surplus of $45.8 billion. 'It may be noted that reciprocal tariffs at varying rates have been imposed by the US on imports from all countries. Combination of different factors such as product differentiation, demand, quality, contractual arrangements would determine the impact on India's exports,' Chaudhary added in his reply to a question asking if the government had made any assessment on the impact of the US' reciprocal tariff threat on Indian goods. In a post on social media platform Truth Social on July 30, US President Donald Trump announced a 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods, with an additional but unspecified 'penalty' for importing energy and defence items from Russia. On August 6, the penalty was clarified to be an additional 25 per cent tariff that will be effective from August 27. As such, from that date, the tariff on Indian goods entering the US will be 50 per cent. Chaudhary's reply to the Lok Sabha question on Monday made no mention of the impact of the 25 per cent penalty or what proportion of India's exports would be subject to it. 'The Department of Commerce is engaged with all stakeholders including exporters and industry for taking feedback of their assessment of the situation. The Government attaches the utmost importance to protecting and promoting the welfare of our farmers, entrepreneurs, exporters, MSMEs etc. and will take all necessary steps to secure our national interest,' the minister further said. Certain items from various nations are exempt from the US' tariffs until the so-called investigations under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 are completed. These investigations look into the effect of various imports on US national security. Currently, the US' Bureau of Industry and Security has nine active Section 232 investigations, including for pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical ingredients. The pharma investigation is particularly crucial from an Indian point of view, with the US accounting for about a third of India's pharma exports of $30 billion in 2024-25. Economists have warned that the US' cumulative 50 per cent tariff could hurt India's growth. In an interview to The Indian Express, Tanvee Gupta Jain, UBS' Chief India Economist, said the 50 per cent tariff has put at risk $30 billion-$35 billion worth of New Delhi's exports to the US. Sebi's proposals for easing capital flows for foreign portfolio investors

India's capital market regulator floated two proposals over the weekend for easing business and capital flows for foreign portfolio investors (FPI). The Securities and Exchange Board of India proposed the 'Single Window Automatic and Generalised Access for Trusted Foreign Investors' (SWAGAT-FI) for low-risk foreign investors, sovereign pools, and regulated public retail funds. Its other proposal aims to widen the participation of resident Indians in FPIs. This would be by allowing retail schemes at the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) with resident Indian sponsors or managers to register as FPIs. A single window for 'trusted" foreign investors Sebi proposed SWAGAT-FI as a streamlined gateway for objectively low-risk foreign investors to access India's markets with lighter onboarding and compliance requirements, while retaining supervisory safeguards. The framework's aims are threefold: easier investment access, unified registration across routes (FPI and foreign venture capital investor, or FVCI), and reduced repetition in compliance and documentation. Sebi noted in its paper that as of 30 June, India had 11,913 registered FPIs with ₹80.83 trillion in assets under custody. The regulator estimated that investors eligible for SWAGAT already account for over 70% of total FPI assets under custody (AUC). Sebi has proposed to identify the following as SWAGAT FI—government and related investors (including central banks), and regulated public retail funds such as mutual funds and insurance companies. The low-risk characterisation rests on transparent ownership, diversified investor bases, and long-term orientation that reduces concerns around minimum public shareholding in listed companies and takeover regulations. Key relaxations, according to Sebi, include optional dual registration (FPI+FVCI) without additional documentation, enabling the same institution to invest in listed and unlisted companies, including startups. The relaxations also include extending the registration or know-your-customer (KYC) review period for such investors to 10 years from 3-5 years. The proposal also aims to permit greater participation of resident and non-resident Indians and persons with overseas citizenship of India in public retail funds by removing the 50% aggregate cap for SWAGAT-FI mutual funds. Facilitating resident Indian participation in FPIs Sebi separately proposed three measures to facilitate and clarify how resident Indian entities can participate in the FPI ecosystem, particularly via Gujarat International Finance Tec-City and International Financial Services Centre (GIFT-IFSC) structures. 1. Retail schemes in IFSC with resident Indian non-individuals as sponsors or managers would be allowed to register as FPIs, extending a permission already available to alternative investment funds (AIFs) at IFSC with resident Indian sponsors or managers. IFSC 'retail schemes' must have at least 20 investors, a 25% cap per investor, a 10% single-issuer limit, and a 'skin-in-the-game" requirement of 1% of assets under management (AUM) or $200,000 by the associate. 2. Sebi proposed aligning contribution limits for resident Indian non-individuals with the International Financial Services Centres Authority's framework by setting a uniform 10% cap of corpus or AUM for retail schemes. 3. To allow Indian mutual funds to invest in overseas mutual funds or unit trusts that have an exposure to India, Sebi proposed permitting overseas mutual funds to register as FPIS with an Indian mutual fund as a constituent. AIFs for accredited investors only Sebi also proposed allowing 'accredited investors only' AIF schemes—a distinct class in which every investor (apart from a manager/sponsor/employee carveout) holds accredited status—to receive more flexible regulatory treatment on investor-protection-centric provisions. An accredited investor is a framework defining income or net-worth criteria across individuals, companies, trusts, and partnerships. Given that accredited investors are presumed capable of assessing complex risk and conducting due diligence, Sebi proposed five main flexibilities for schemes meant only for them: Sebi said the proposals are meant to incentivise managers to launch products specifically for accredited investors while maintaining systemic safeguards such as disclosures, misconduct deterrence, conflict management, and anti-circumvention policies. All three proposals are open for stakeholder comments until 29 August.
