Morocco to Reportedly Boost Navy with Two Military Submarines
Two European shipbuilders are running to win the bid and deliver their latest state-of-the-art submarines to the North African country.
Both France's Naval Group and Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) are showcasing their latest advancement in terms of submarine designs to win a deal with Rabat.
France's shipbuilder Naval Group is pulling out all the stops, offering Morocco two Scorpène-class submarines while also vying for the concession to operate a new shipyard in Casablanca.
Military Africa reported that the French group's Scorpène is 'incredibly stealthy and autonomous,' with a flexible design that can be customized to Morocco's needs.
This advanced submarine can integrate the latest innovations, including lithium-ion batteries, increasing endurance and technological edge.
The Scorpène is also equipped with an integrated French combat system and a fully automated centralized platform control system. This ensures a high level of diving safety with a smaller crew, making it ideal for coastal waters.
The relationship between Naval Group and Morocco is already in place, as the country's Royal Armed Forces have been in talks with the group for a potential submarine contract since 2021.
In 2014, the company delivered a multi-mission frigate to Morocco, further solidifying its presence in the country. 'By 2022, Naval Group will be the sole bidder to manage the future Casablanca shipyard, positioning it as a frontrunner in this competition,' Military Africa wrote.
On the other side, Germany's TKMS is also bringing its submarine technologies to the table with the HDW Class Dolphin AIP submarine and the HDW Class 209/1400mod.

TKMS' Dolphin delivers 'high operational value' with an integrated fuel cell system that significantly boosts submerged endurance, featuring a state-of-the-art combat system, and a versatile weapon expulsion system capable of launching torpedoes, missiles, and mines.
Although with an older design, the HDW Class 209/1400mod remains a reliable and proven option, adding depth to Germany's bid, according to the magazine.
The news comes as the North African country is working to enhance its military capabilities to improve its ability to respond to various security challenges and protect its territorial integrity.
Morocco increased its defense budget for 2025 to over MAD 133 billion (approximately $13 billion), as part of a strategy to strengthen its military capabilities in the face of rising regional tensions. Tags: Morocco navyMorocco's militarySubmarine

Trump to lift Biden's restrictions on US investments in the Sahara
«Under Joe Biden's administration, American investments in Western Sahara were restricted, but Donald Trump is expected to lift these limitations», reported Africa Intelligence on Thursday, July 31. According to the newspaper, the U.S. federal government, through the International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), is preparing to financially support investment projects in the Sahara proposed by American companies. Following a security assessment, the National Security Agency (NSA) has given the green light for U.S. investor presence in the region, effectively dismissing repeated threats from the Polisario Front targeting foreign economic actors under the pretext of an ongoing «war» against Morocco. Just two weeks before Joe Biden took office, a high-level DFC delegation visited Morocco on January 7, 2020, to explore private investment opportunities and stimulate economic growth. The visit followed the announcement of a $5 billion investment plan for Morocco and North Africa. Shortly afterward, the investment platform was launched from the headquarters of the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab regional wilaya. The event was attended by then–U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, David Schenker, and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. Funded by the U.S. government through the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs and the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI), the platform was created to promote regional investment and territorial marketing and to support the planned opening of a U.S. consulate in Dakhla. Biden's arrival at the White House temporarily stalled these initiatives. Several U.S. lawmakers strongly opposed any new political or economic move that might reaffirm Washington's recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara. Still, the DFC maintained communication with Moroccan counterparts, including during a visit in October 2024. With Donald Trump now returning to the presidency, the pathway appears clear for direct federal support of economic projects in the Sahara. This shift follows an earlier step taken in April 2024 by the U.S. State Department, then headed by Democrat Antony Blinken, which pledged up to $500,000 to support projects promoting inclusive economic growth in Dakhla and Laayoune, a symbolic gesture reinforcing U.S. recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the territory. Meanwhile, major American companies like GE Vernova, a subsidiary of General Electric, are already active in the Sahara, implementing projects for Moroccan public institutions.

Qatar Airways Boosts Flights to Casablanca in Winter 2025 Schedule
Marrakech – Qatar Airways has announced an increase in its flight frequency to Casablanca as part of its expanded winter schedule for 2025. The airline will raise its service from four to five weekly flights to meet growing demand and enhance connectivity through its Doha hub, Hamad International Airport. Casablanca, Morocco's economic capital and largest city, is among several key global destinations benefiting from increased frequency this winter. This initiative is part of Qatar Airways' efforts to strengthen its presence in the Moroccan market, enabling it to reinforce connections between Africa, the Middle East, and the rest of the world. For the Qatari carrier, Casablanca remains a privileged access point to the North African country's centuries-old heritage and contemporary prospects. The increased service aims to offer passengers more options for traveling to and from the city and to multiply connections to other destinations from the Doha hub. The World's Best Airline, as voted by Skytrax in 2025 for a record ninth time, has introduced increased flights to over 15 global destinations for this year's winter season. The airline is facilitating demand for its services and continues to offer greater choice and connectivity, the company stated in a recent press release. Among the most notable increases in the winter 2025-2026 schedule is London Heathrow service, which will now operate up to 10 daily flights – a record frequency for Qatar Airways on this route, complemented by British Airways' double daily flights. According to the airline, this reflects strong demand for key destinations like London, Dublin, Cape Town, and São Paulo. For the winter 2025-2026 season, Qatar Airways is increasing flight frequencies to several major cities including Abu Dhabi (up to 6 daily flights), Berlin (up to 21 weekly flights), Cape Town (up to 12 weekly flights), Dublin (17 weekly flights), Frankfurt (21 weekly flights), and Johannesburg (18 weekly flights). The airline is also expanding service to London Heathrow (up to 10 daily flights), Madrid (17 weekly flights), the Maldives (up to 4 daily flights), Manchester (24 weekly flights), Phuket (up to 4 daily flights), São Paulo (18 weekly flights), Sharjah (7 daily flights), Tokyo Narita (14 weekly flights), and Toronto (7 weekly flights). US Expected to Greenlight $5 Billion Investment for Morocco's Southern Provinces
Rabat – The US is turning its pledges into reality, preparing to invest $5 billion to support the socio-economic development of Morocco's southern provinces in Western Sahara. For years, especially after the US recognized Morocco's territorial integrity over the region in 2020, Washington has pledged to support the inclusive growth of the southern provinces. 'A policy limited under Joe Biden's administration, the possibility for American companies to invest in Western Sahara is expected to be eased by Donald Trump,' the African Intelligence wrote on Thursday. The report said that the Trump administration is preparing to encourage American companies to invest in Morocco's southern provinces. The US Development Finance Corporation received a green light from Washington to find projects in the region. The development finance cooperation has already held meetings with Moroccan stakeholders, including Moroccan banks and companies, to identify promising projects, the report added. For years, the US has been pledging to continue to support the development of Morocco's southern provinces. The US further emphasized this commitment following its newfound position in 2020, when it officially recognized Morocco's full sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara. Following its decision, former U.S. Ambassador to Morocco David Fischer announced the US' willingness to open a consulate in Dakhla and to support and encourage investment and development projects that bring 'tangible benefits' to the region's residents. 'I come from a business background in the United States, and I am 100 percent certain that Morocco has a strong economic future ahead of it as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic,' he said in December 2020. The development of the region is a pillar of King Mohammed VI's vision. In his speeches, the monarch has been sharing his vision, emphasizing Morocco's determination to transform southern provinces into an 'engine of development at the regional and continental levels.' The North African kingdom launched several projects to fulfill this commitment, including the Dakhla Atlantic Port. Morocco and the US enjoy strong relations. Now, the two countries seek deeper ties. The US repeatedly emphasized its support for Morocco's territorial integrity. This was confirmed just a few days ago by the US ambassador nominee to Morocco, Richard Duke Buchan III . During his hearing on July 30, Buchan reiterated his country's position, hailing Morocco's Autonomy Plan as the only viable basis for a just and lasting solution for the Western Sahara dispute. He also reiterated his country's determination to facilitate the UN-led political process, calling on all parties to the dispute to engage in the process without further delay.
