Rory McIlroy Makes Tom Brady, Novak Djokovic Comparison at Scottish Open

Since winning the Masters Tournament and completing the Career Grand Slam, Rory McIlroy's motivation has been a topic of conversation. It's not just about achieving the ultimate feat in professional golf, but also the length of time the Northern Irishman has been among the world's best players.
Both issues seem to have been on McIlroy's mind quite a bit. During his press conference prior to the Genesis Scottish Open, the five-time major winner showed the utmost respect for sporting longevity and cited examples from stars in other sports to illustrate how big an achievement it is:
"I think it's one of the underappreciated things about any sport," he said.
"You look at what Djokovic is doing at Wimbledon over the last couple weeks or what some of those guys have done, or what someone like Cristiano Ronaldo is still doing at 40 years old, or Tom Brady in American football.
"That longevity piece is something that maybe isn't talked about enough."

At 38 years old and 24 Grand Slam titles later, Djokovic is still making waves at the highest level of world tennis, while Cristiano Ronaldo just won the UEFA Nations League with Portugal and signed a new contract with the Saudi club Al-Nasr at the age of 40.
Tom Brady, meanwhile, went on to win the 2020 Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the age of 42, while smashing records well into his 40s.
McIlroy, 36, has been winning professional tournaments since 2010 and has 44 of them by now. He has also spent 122 weeks as the World No. 1 while sharing eras with Tiger Woods and Scottie Scheffler, among other notable stars.
Is Rory McIlroy's Motivation Surging Once More?
Perhaps completing the Career Grand Slam momentarily affected Rory McIlroy's focus on his professional future. Perhaps for a moment, he couldn't define where his career's path was headed.
But it's safe to say that that moment is now completely behind him.
"I don't want that to be my last great moment in the game. There's plenty more that I can do," he said.
"I feel like I've kept banging on this drum all of this year, I feel like I'm a better player now than I ever have been."
"There's venues in the game that just mean a little bit more."

McIlroy even hinted what the new milestones set for the future of his career might be:
"There's so many opportunities that lie ahead and whether that's Portrush next week, or The Open going back to St. Andrews, or a U.S. Open at Pebble Beach."
"There's all these great venues that all the greats have won on, and I'd love to add my name to those lists, as well."
The Open Championship and US Open will not return to St. Andrews and Pebble Beach, respectively, until the 2027 season.
So, no one should expect Rory McIlroy to hang up the clubs anytime soon.

Scottie Scheffler's Caddie Won't Be Back for BMW Championship
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Everything seems to indicate that the personal matters that led Scottie Scheffler's caddie, Ted Scott, to suddenly leave for home last weekend have taken longer than initially will not be back for the BMW Championship, and Scheffler will have a new bagman carrying his bag. The news was posted on the official PGA Tour website. Not only was Scott's absence announced, but the World No. 1 will have Mike Cromie, a seasoned caddie who regularly works with Chris Kirk. Cromie was released after the FedEx St. Jude Championship because Kirk just missed qualifying for the BMW Championship. He ended ranked 51st in the FedEx Cup standings, ending his regular season after finishing tied for ninth in Memphis. Kirk and Cromie have been working together since 2020, during which time the player has won two tournaments, the 2023 Honda Classic and The Sentry in 2024. Cromie is also a good player, and even played college golf for the University of Georgia. Scottie Scheffler of the United States swaps clubs with his caddie Ted Scott on the eighth hole during the first round of the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Country Club on May 15, 2025 in Charlotte, North Carolina MoreScott was with Scheffler in Memphis for the first three rounds, but had to travel home suddenly due to a personal matter. The world No. 1 had to call on his friend Brad Payne, who is also the PGA Tour chaplain, to help him during the final round. There is no information yet on how long Scott will be away. Nor is there any information on whether Cromie will remain his backup should he also need to miss the TOUR Championship. Scott is one of the most respected caddies on the PGA Tour. He has been at Scheffler's side for each of his 17 victories on tour, including four major championships, and he previously helped Bubba Watson win two green jackets. Scheffler has a commanding lead in the FedEx Cup standings and is the overwhelming favorite to win the BMW Championship. The Ridgewood, New Jersey, native has finished in the top 10 in 14 of his 17 tournaments this season, including four wins. Twelve of those top 10 finishes have come consecutively, a streak he'll look to maintain this week in Maryland. More Golf: Bryson DeChambeau Opens Up About Plans for President's Sports Council

Blue Jays' Bo Bichette Gets Encouraging Projection with Free Agency Looming
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Bo Bichette's resurgence has been an encouraging storyline in a very fun season for the Toronto Blue Jays. Coming off a brutal year where he missed half the Blue Jays' games and saw his offensive stats fall off a cliff, Bichette has rebounded and found his former All-Star form. With an .807 OPS this year, Bichette is back above his career average. He's also got 16 home runs, all of which have come since the start of May, and 78 RBIs, which is tops among major league shortstops. (Photo by) Sousa/Getty At one point, it looked like Bichette's free agency would be a tough sell. But now, with only two months of regular-season ball to go before he hits the open market, it appears the 27-year-old is primed to cash in. On Tuesday, The Athletic's Tim Britton projected Bichette as the No. 2 free agent in this winter's class, behind Kyle Tucker of the Chicago Cubs. That label should prove fruitful if it indeed holds true when the market opens. "The Jays have the AL's best record, and that's in no small part owing to their shortstop's renaissance. Bichette's numbers this season align neatly with the career track record he compiled before last year's unpleasantness, and he's been especially hot (as Toronto has) since just before the All-Star break," wrote Britton. "Since July 7, only Nick Kurtz has compiled more wins above replacement (according to FanGraphs) than Bichette. He's the easy No. 2 in this free-agent class behind Kyle Tucker." If Bichette is indeed the second-most coveted free agent behind Tucker, who looks like a candidate for at least $400 million, he would be set up nicely to make well over $100 million and possibly eclipse $200 million on the open market. Spotrac's calculated annual value for Bichette is over $21 million, and that could climb in an aggressive market. Of course, Bichette's primary objective is to bring the Blue Jays a World Series first. But Toronto has serious decisions to make about how much they think their homegrown shortstop is worth. Tommy Fleetwood may be the PGA Tour's highest-earning player without a win, but his grace in defeat continues to win hearts every time, including one from the LPGA's most outspoken voice, Paige Spiranac. (Credits: Getty Images) Getty Images Fleetwood entered Sunday's final round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship with a one-shot lead, poised to secure his first PGA Tour title since turning pro in 2010. Despite a strong week, a bogey on the 17th hole dropped the 34-year-old out of contention. He finished tied for third at 15-under alongside World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, whereas Justin Rose claimed the title after a playoff win over J.J. Spaun. While fans flooded social media with sympathy and frustration, Paige Spiranac expressed her sympathy for the PGA Tour star. "You really have to feel for (Tommy) Fleetwood at this point. Brutal," Spiranac posted on X on Sunday night. You really have to feel for fleetwood at this point. Brutal. — Paige Spiranac (@PaigeSpiranac) August 10, 2025 Her comment quickly gained traction, echoing the sentiment of thousands who watched Fleetwood's hopes unravel late in the round. But what followed was a masterclass from the seven-time DP World Tour winner. Hours after the heartbreaking loss, Fleetwood responded not with excuses but with admiration for his friend and playing partner. "With every disappointment I truly know I'm closer and closer and even more determined than ever that I will get this done," he wrote on X. "The support I've received is invaluable and hugely appreciated, we'll get there together! @JustinRose99, your win is inspiring, congratulations my friend!! A new week. See you at work!!" Rose, who birdied the final hole to force a playoff and then sealed his 12th PGA Tour win with a clutch putt on the third extra hole, praised Fleetwood's spirit in his post-round interview after the win. "This one felt quite stoic in the sense of determination, execution," Rose told reporters during the press conference on Sunday. "There were a few different agendas—playing with Tommy (Fleetwood), playing in great spirits in that group, and then kind of turning into the playoff and being that dynamic as it always is with USA, Europe, obviously Ryder Cup around the corner." Fleetwood's composure and Rose's tribute underscored the bond between the two Englishmen, one forged through years of Ryder Cup battles and Tour camaraderie. And now, both are officially headed to Bethpage Black. Following their performances in Memphis, Fleetwood and Rose joined Rory McIlroy as automatic qualifiers for Team Europe at this year's Ryder Cup in late September. Fleetwood will make his fourth consecutive appearance, while Rose returns for his seventh. More Golf: Why Justin Rose Tipped Cap To Phil Mickelson After FedEx Cup Playoff Win
