A HUGE family was slaughtered, skinned, cooked and eaten in a cave nearly 6,000 years ago, a new study reveals.
Neolithic cannibals in what's now northern Spain feasted on at least 11 people - including kids - their remains show.

Bones discovered at the El Mirador cave showed clear evidence of cannibalism, including cut marks, human bite marks and fractures for marrow extraction.
The bones also showed signs of being boiled, according to a study published on Thursday in the journal Scientific Reports.
The gruesome event is believed to have occurred over a few days during the final phase of the Neolithic - or New Stone Age - occupation of the cave.
Researchers believe the cannibalism was a result of violence between groups - not ritual or famine.
"This was neither a funerary tradition nor a response to extreme famine," said study co-author Francesc Marginedas, who is an IPHES evolutionary anthropologist and quaternary archaeologist.
"The evidence points to a violent episode, given how quickly it all took place - possibly the result of conflict between neighbouring farming communities," he added.
Based on radiocarbon dating, the bones were found to be between 5,573 and 5,709 years old.
A chemical analysis revealed that the individuals were local to the region and likely a nuclear or extended family, with ages ranging from under seven to over 50.
The analysis also confirmed suspicions they had been killed over a short period of time.
The discovery has captured the attention of historians studying the Neolithic period as it offers rare evidence of conflict-driven cannibalism.

The Neolithic period, which lasted till around 2000 BC, is understood to have been marked by upheaval and conflict.
Humanity shifted from nomadic foraging and hunting to settled farming and animal domestication - sparking new social hierarchies and competition over land and resources.
"Conflict and the development of strategies to manage and prevent it are part of human nature," said study co-author, archaeologist and IPHES researcher Antonio Rodríguez-Hidalgo.
"Ethnographic and archaeological records show that even in the less stratified and small-scale societies, violent episodes can occur in which the enemies could be consumed as a form of ultimate elimination."
In the early 2000s, archaeologists found the remains of six people with similar marks at El Mirador cave.
"Taphonomic analysis revealed the existence of cutmarks, human toothmarks, cooking damage, and deliberate breakage in most of the remains recovered, suggesting a clear case of gastronomic cannibalism," wrote the authors of the study published in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology.
The remains are younger than the recently discovered ones, dating to the early Bronze Age - about 4,600 to 4,100 years old.
Meanwhile, human remains recently found in Maszycka Cave in Poland suggest victims of cannibalism during an act of war.
A study published in Scientific Reports in February analysed 53 bones belonging to at least 10 people, six adults and four children.
The 18,000-year-old bones show signs of butchering and were hard to distinguish from the animal bones they were found alongside.
Cut marks and fractures reveal the attackers cracked open skulls and scooped out brains.
The pattern indicates they targeted the most calorie-rich parts - the brains, bone marrow and muscles - shortly after death.

So, what happened? (Picture: Getty) At the time, Dr Calhoun built a colony for the mice at the National Institute of Mental Health in Maryland. It was relatively large, sitting at 4½-foot cube, and it was stocked with everything a mouse could ever need, from plenty of food and water, having a perfect climate, lots of paper to make cozy nests and 256 separate apartments which were accessible via mesh tubes bolted to the walls. He even screened the mice so there would be no disease. But this was Dr Colhoun's 25th experiment using mice, and he knew how quickly things could decline (Picture: Yoichi R Okamoto/The White House) At the time many architects and civil engineers were looking into how to build better cities, so Dr Calhoun thought urban design might be studied in rodents first and then applied to human beings. But experiment 25 was the most famous. But mice breed quickly and the population doubled every 55 days. This led to massive growth in the mice population, which eventually slowed – however, it did continue to climb, just not as fast. At its peak, there were 2,200 mice during the 19th month. But there was an issue. In the wild, infant mice are usually eaten by predators, or die from disease – however in this mice utopia, they rarely died which led to issues in the society (Picture: Getty) Since mice have social hierarchies, young males who tried to become alphas – but failed – had nowhere to go and would gather in the centre of the pen, which often led to brawls. Alpha males also tried to keep their harems in private apartments but they were often overwhelmed by the abundance of young mice trying to mate, and soon the alphas stopped defending the females. This left apartments with nursing females to be invaded by rogue males. This stressed out the mothers, and led them to kick out their young from the nest earlier and some even attacked their own young, leaving them to die from neglect (Picture: Getty Images) These mice which had been raised improperly displayed strange behaviour, as females began isolating themselves in empty apartments, and the males, which were dubbed the 'beautiful ones', just groomed themselves all day. But even though they obsessed over their appearance they had no interest in sex. In previous experiments, Dr Calhoun saw this behaviour could spread and called this 'the behavioral sink'. This is essentially the collapse of normal behaviour due to overpopulation (Picture: Getty) So soon the population of the mice began to massively decline, since some mice stopped mating, and infant mortality rose sharply. By the 21st month, newborn pups rarely survived more than a few days. New births stopped altogether, and older mice began dying too. Three people tested positive for the disease, officially called Oropouche virus, between January and June 2025, new data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) says. Historically, Oropouche was confined to within the Amazon basin in South America, including Brazil, Peru, Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, and Panama. In 2024, outbreaks also appeared in these regions as well as in Cuba and Barbados, the likely source of some of the 19 cases of sloth fever reported in Europe last year. The first cases of the oropouche in the UK were all linked to travel from Brazil, the UKHSA said. The bug typically circulates between primates, including sloths - hence the nickname - before it is occasionally passed to humans by the critters. Mosquitos and midges found in the UK and wider Europe do not currently spread Oropouche virus disease. Until last year, experts didn't think the virus could spread from person to person. But a study published by Italian scientists in December suggested it could spread in semen, sparking concerns about possible sexual transmission. Scientists are currently investigating whether the infection can be passed on from mothers to babies during pregnancy, after the virus was linked to stillbirths and birth defects. For most people, Oropouche infections are mild, with symptoms typically showing up 4 to 8 days after a bite. The first ever deaths linked to the virus were reported in Brazil in July 2024, where, sadly, two people died. There are currently no specific antiviral treatments or vaccines available. Treatment for symptoms can include rest, fluids, and the use of medicines to reduce pain and fever.

An ancient 250-mile-wide blob is heading towards New York City

Picture a cross between the movies, The Blob and Volcano (Picture: Getty/Metro) A gigantic blob is slowly creeping towards New York City – and there's nothing we can do to stop it. Well, kind of. Researchers from the University of Southampton have discovered a mass of molten rock underneath the Eastern US. The slime, known as the Northern Appalachian Anomaly, stretches 2249 miles wide and is oozing southwest at 12 miles per million years. But don't worry about being stuck behind it and being late to work – it sits 124 miles underground, according to the study in the journal Geology. It's considered a thermal anomaly because it's far hotter than where it sits in the asthenosphere, a semi-molten layer of Earth. Study lead and geoscientist Tom Gernon told Metro that the thermal lump has long puzzled scientists, as it doesn't quite fit into our understanding of how contents formed. The anomaly may have split Greenland from North America 80 million years ago, the study suggests (Picture: University of Southampton) Earth used to be a supercontinent called Pangaea. But our planet is a massive puzzle and its pieces, tectonic plates, are always moving around on a layer of molten rock. Gernon said: 'Imagine pulling a toffee bar apart, the toffee thins. That's exactly what happens to continents when they're stretched apart.' About 180million years ago, Pangaea broke apart and North America drifted from Africa. Experts have long believed that the blob was leftover magma from this geological shift. Yet the study, which included the Helmholtz Center for Geosciences in Germany, said the blob is a lot 'younger' than that. 'We proposed it formed when Greenland and Canada separated. So, admittedly not too much younger, it's 90million years old,' Gernon said. To map the molten sludge's route, scientists used seismic tomography, which is essentially an MRI for tectonic plates. The idea, Gernon said, is that hot rock sitting just outside the Earth's core rises to fill the cracks in the crust caused by rifts. This hot goo peels off the weakest layer of tectonic plates, 'like the blobs of a hot lava lamp', and lifts the crust from below. 'Think of a hot air balloon, you're happily bopping along and you drop the weight, you rise up. This anomaly is cutting the weight – the weakened layer of the crust – so the whole plate becomes lighter and lifts,' Gernon said. The seismic lava lamp could explain why the Appalachian Mountains are still standing tall despite years of erosion and why volcanic activity in the region causes diamonds to reach the surface. As the blob drifts away from the Appalachians, the mountain range will slowly begin to sag without the thermal lift. This syrup isn't anything for New Yorkers to be concerned about – its centre won't pass through the Big Apple for the next 15trillion years. Nor will it bring about the Apocalypse when it does so. 'It's not going to be a big, crazy, super volcanic eruptions, nothing like that at all,' he said. Someone told me it's the millionth of a snail's pace – it's not something people need to be worried about.' While the study was focused on the Northern Appalachian Anomaly, the team also looked at a hot zone beneath North Central Greenland, which is influencing the region's miles-thick ice sheets. 'Something that happened 90million years ago can still have an impact on us today,' Gernon added. 'It's an interesting thought experiment, to go and re-examine these ancient things that we didn't really understand. 'Maybe, in the light of this new idea, we can realise what interesting effects they're having on the surface.'
