Community Health Officers strike in AP enters 25th day
Speaking to The Hindu, APMCA president N. Niranjan said, 'Under National Health Mission (NHM), nearly 23,000 employees, including 10,000 Community Health Officers (CHOs), are working in AP. The CHOs have not received 23% enhancement on par with other NHM employees. Also, regularisation of services is pending for those who completed six years of service.'
Earlier, when we staged a protest in November 2023, Special Chief Secretary for Department of Health, Medical and Family Welfare M.T. Krishna Babu had assured to resolve our issues, Mr. Niranjan said while adding that even though he remained in the same position after the change of government, there was no announcement till now in the favour of CHOs.
The CHOs play a vital role in the Ayushman Arogya Mandir (AAM) programme, which is a key component of the Ayushman Bharat initiative. They are mid-level service providers who deliver comprehensive primary health care services at the AAMs, which are essentially upgraded Health and Wellness Centers (HWCs).
The CHOs have been on a strike across the State since April 10. In Prakasam district, the CHOs took out a huge rally and staged an innovative protest by performing yoga asanas at Church Centre in Ongole on Friday. M. Rajesh, vice president of APMCA and a CHO from Dornala mandal in the district, demanded the revival of EPFO for their job security.

Government proposes exempting life & health insurance for individuals from GST
Representative image NEW DELHI: The Centre has proposed exempting life and health insurance policies for individuals from the ambit of GST, the head of a panel of ministers set up by the GST council said on Wednesday, a move that is expected to provide relief to large sections of consumers. Bihar deputy chief minister and convenor of the panel of ministers on health and insurance Samrat Choudhary said the Centre's proposal is clear that individual insurance policies should be exempt from GST. "This has been discussed and the GoM report will be presented to the council," Choudhary was quoted as saying. He also said all members have given their approval for lowering rates and some states have given their own views. He said a final call issue would be taken by the GST council when it meets. The panel includes ministers from UP, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Gujarat, Meghalaya, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Telangana. "The proposed reduction of GST on health and life insurance from 18% to nil (exempt) shows how GST has evolved from just a way to collect revenue to a tool for advancing national goals. It can help promote financial inclusion, strengthen healthcare, and support key initiatives like Ayushman Bharat and universal coverage," said Saurabh Agarwal, Tax Partner, EY India. "This change could be very important for both customers and the insurance industry. For individuals, especially senior citizens and low-income families, it could make insurance more affordable."

Over 97k sickle cell cases found in state in 2 years
Bhubaneswar: As many as 97,501 sickle cell disease (SCD) cases have been identified in the state in the last two years after 46.65 lakh people were screened. This was revealed at a review meeting chaired by health secretary Aswathy S here on Wednesday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now So far, 46.65 lakh screenings have been conducted against the cumulative target of around 1.08 crore up to the year 2025-26 from the launch of the programme in July 2023. "Sickle cell traits have been found in 4,11,395 cases. The identified cases are being provided with the required treatment through govt hospitals in their respective areas," said a statement from the health and family welfare department. At the meeting, the health secretary asked her department officials to intensify the drive against SCD and thalassemia in high-risk zones. Brundha D, mission director, National Health Mission (NHM), Odisha, said 21 districts have been covered under the sickle cell programme of the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission. In these districts, SCD screening facilities are provided on different platforms. "At the school and anganwadi centre level, screening for children aged 0 to 18 years is conducted by the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) team at the community level. The screening of pregnant women is done in the course of antenatal care on village health and nutrition day. In tribal areas, the screening is done through mobile health units," she added. In urban areas, screening facilities are available at the level of Ayushman Arogya Mandirs. Besides, screening facilities have also been made available at the health centre level in other less risky nine districts, said the senior officer. Free blood is provided to them. They are also exempted from paying the service charges for blood packs. Free medicines are provided to them at govt hospitals. Besides, financial assistance of up to Rs 10 lakh is provided to children less than 12 years of age for bone marrow transplantation, she added.

State to help Himachal Pradesh adopt Kerala model of palliative care
The Kerala Health department will offer all support to Himachal Pradesh to implement the Kerala model of community-based palliative care in all Assembly constituencies in the north Indian State. A team from Himachal Pradesh, including the Health Minister, Health Secretary and NHM Mission Director, had visited Kerala earlier to study the State's palliative care model. They had visited Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam districts to study the delivery of palliative care services closely and had expressed their appreciation for the State's universal palliative care delivery for all bed-ridden patients. With Himachal Pradesh deciding to adopt the community-based palliative care model of Kerala, it had been decided to give training in palliative care delivery to 70 doctors and as many nurses The first team consisting of 15 nurses and 15 doctors from Himachal Pradesh were given 10-days' training in palliative care delivery.
