A man died after he was swept away while crossing Tuwaan River in Alamada, Cotabato last Tuesday, May 20.
According to Dano Tingcungco's report in '24 Oras' on Thursday, the 60-year-old victim was found dead at Libungan River. Meanwhile, his 30-year-old son survived.
'Kasama niya 'yung anak niya na tumawid tapos naabutan ng ulo ng baha, so naanod silang dalawa, mga 100 meters. Sadly, 'yung tatay, nakabitaw doon sa anak kaya naanod 'yung tatay. 'Yung anak, naka-survive,' said Alamada MDRRMO head Jeanne Pulmones.
(He was with his son when they crossed the river and were caught by the floodwaters, so they were both swept away, about 100 meters. Sadly, the father was not able to hold on to his son for long and was swept away. The son survived.)
State weather bureau PAGASA said that Intertropical Convergence Zone or ITCZ prevails over Mindanao, bringing rainy weather to the island.
In Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental, the bad weather caused a river to have a raging current.
Also in Davao Occidental, a portion of a bridge in Jose Abad Santos town was damaged due to the strong current in the river. This left motorists no choice but to cross the floodwater.
The Department of Public Works and Highways Region 11 said that its personnel and heavy equipment are already on standby for the repairs awaiting the weather to improve.
In Maguindanao del Sur, over 50,000 families from 12 towns are affected by the flood in the province. Meanwhile, more than 1,300 families are currently staying in 10 evacuation centers.
The Bangsamoro government has also extended assistance and rescued trapped individuals in Maguindanao del Sur. — Vince Angelo Ferreras/BAP, GMA Integrated News

Fire-hit residents in Davao City face floods in evacuation center

Some evacuees displaced by a recent fire were among those affected by the flooding caused by heavy rainfall in some areas in Mindanao. According to Marisol Abdurahman's Thursday report on '24 Oras,' some students and teachers braved the flood to get home in South Upi, Maguindanao del Sur. Some motorcycles also found difficulty passing through the flooded area. Due to the flooding in Davao City, some vehicles stalled while wading through the floodwaters. According to some barangay officials, the flooding is caused by the downpour and high tide. In Barangay Leon Garcia Sr. in Davao City, evacuees were forced to move to five different classrooms as flood entered the school's gymnasium. They were among the almost 100 affected families by the fire that hit on Monday. Some residents of Bongao, Tawi-Tawi said they have been experiencing heavy rains for about a week. Meanwhile, a bridge fully collapsed following a downpour and flooding in Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte. According to PAGASA, the thunderstorm and Intertropical Convergence Zone caused the bad weather in some parts of the country. —Mariel Celine Serquiña/LDF, GMA Integrated News

The low pressure area (LPA) located east of Aurora was moving closer to Luzon and had a medium chance of developing into a tropical cyclone within 24 hours, state weather bureau PAGASA said Thursday. The public was advised to monitor updates from the state weather bureau. In its 4 a.m. forecast, PAGASA said the trough of the LPA may bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms over Metro Manila, Bicol, Calabarzon, Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Samar, and Biliran. Flash floods or landslides are possible due to moderate to at times heavy rains. –Joviland Rita/VBL, GMA Integrated News
