A man died after he was swept away while crossing Tuwaan River in Alamada, Cotabato last Tuesday, May 20.
According to Dano Tingcungco's report in '24 Oras' on Thursday, the 60-year-old victim was found dead at Libungan River. Meanwhile, his 30-year-old son survived.
'Kasama niya 'yung anak niya na tumawid tapos naabutan ng ulo ng baha, so naanod silang dalawa, mga 100 meters. Sadly, 'yung tatay, nakabitaw doon sa anak kaya naanod 'yung tatay. 'Yung anak, naka-survive,' said Alamada MDRRMO head Jeanne Pulmones.
(He was with his son when they crossed the river and were caught by the floodwaters, so they were both swept away, about 100 meters. Sadly, the father was not able to hold on to his son for long and was swept away. The son survived.)
State weather bureau PAGASA said that Intertropical Convergence Zone or ITCZ prevails over Mindanao, bringing rainy weather to the island.
In Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental, the bad weather caused a river to have a raging current.
Also in Davao Occidental, a portion of a bridge in Jose Abad Santos town was damaged due to the strong current in the river. This left motorists no choice but to cross the floodwater.
The Department of Public Works and Highways Region 11 said that its personnel and heavy equipment are already on standby for the repairs awaiting the weather to improve.
In Maguindanao del Sur, over 50,000 families from 12 towns are affected by the flood in the province. Meanwhile, more than 1,300 families are currently staying in 10 evacuation centers.
The Bangsamoro government has also extended assistance and rescued trapped individuals in Maguindanao del Sur. — Vince Angelo Ferreras/BAP, GMA Integrated News

LPA outside PAR unlikely to become storm — PAGASA

The low pressure area (LPA) monitored outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) has a 'low' chance of becoming a tropical depression within the next 24 hours, PAGASA said Thursday afternoon. As of 2 p.m., the LPA was located 1,120 kilometers east of northeastern Mindanao. For now, the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) and the trough of LPA are expected to bring cloudy skies and rains over several areas of the country. In its 4 p.m. daily forecast, the state weather bureau said cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms would persist over MIMAROPA, the Bicol Region, Western Visayas, the Negros Island Region, the Zamboanga Peninsula, BARMM, and Quezon due to the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat). The same weather conditions will be observed for the rest of the Visayas and Mindanao due to the trough of the LPA. These moderate to at times heavy rains may cause flash floods and landslides. Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will see partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to the Habagat. These severe thunderstorms may trigger flash floods and landslides. State meteorologists also said the northern and western sections of Luzon will experience moderate wind and coastal water conditions. Winds will be light to moderate, while coastal waters will be slight to moderate throughout the rest of the country. Sunrise in Metro Manila will be at 5:26 a.m. on Friday. —Mariel Celine Serquiña/VBL, GMA Integrated News

PAGASA: High chance of rain in Luzon, Mindanao due to Habagat, ITCZ

Parts of Luzon and Mindanao are likely to experience a rainy Thursday due to the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat and the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), PAGASA said. In its 4 a.m. bulletin, the weather bureau also said it has spotted a low pressure area outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility, but which is unlikely to develop into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours. Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Zambales, Bataan, and Palawan will have cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms brought about by the Southwest Monsoon. The ITCZ will trigger scattered rains and thunderstorms in Zamboanga Peninsula, SOCCSKSARGEN, BARMM, Davao Occidental, Davao del Sur, and Davao Oriental. Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms also due to the Southwest Monsoon. The rest of the country will see partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms as a result of localized thunderstorms. Sunrise is at 5:26 a.m. and sunset is at 6:23 p.m. —LDF, GMA Integrated News

Cloudy skies, rains forecast for parts of Mindanao due to ITCZ

Multiple weather systems continue to affect the country, according to PAGASA's daily weather forecast on Wednesday afternoon. The Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) is set to cause cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms in the Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Zambales, Bataan, and Palawan, and partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms over Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon. Zamboanga Peninsula, SOCCSKSARGEN, BARMM, Davao Occidental, Davao del Sur, and Davao Oriental will have cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms due to the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), while the rest of the country will see partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms caused by localized thunderstorms. Flash floods or landslides may occur due to these weather conditions. Meanwhile, moderate winds with moderate seas will be observed in the northern and western sections of Luzon. The rest of the country will expect light to moderate winds with slight to moderate coastal waters. Sunrise in Metro Manila will be at 5:26 a.m. on Thursday. — Jiselle Anne Casucian/VBL, GMA Integrated News
