No matter what the reason, if there's one thing to know about Cyclone football, it's this …If you're looking for a random team to root for, this is it. And why?Iowa State has been playing college football, at least as an acknowledged program, since 1895. In all of that time, it has just two pieces of a conference title.
In 1911 and 1912, Iowa State was the co-champion of the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Oh sure, the tie for the Big 12 North title in 2004, but it was only 4-4 in Big 12 play, and Colorado went on to get walloped by Oklahoma. That's why the run to the Big 12 Championship game was such a big deal, and why the loss to Arizona State was so disappointing.
A win would've been the school's first outright conference title, and it would've meant a trip to the College Football Playoff, a first round bye, and - as it turned out - a shot at Texas in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. But the Cyclones lost 45-19 and went on to play in the Pop-Tarts Bowl, beating Miami 42-41, partly because Hurricane quarterback Cam Ward quit on his team at the end of the first half once he set the D-I record for touchdown passes.
So 2024 was ultimately a disappointment, right? Far from it. It was still the best season in the history of Iowa State football. The program had never won ten games in a season before last year. It won 11. It was also the second time in five seasons that Iowa State took a bite at the championship apple - in 2020 it lost to Oklahoma 27-21.
The 2025 Cyclones, in a lot of ways, are better. The receiving corps and defensive line should take a step back, and the O line could use a little work, but the skill parts are strong, the defensive back seven/eight should be terrific, and there's no team on the slate the Cyclones can't beat. It's a fun team with a fan base that knows how to get fired up for its school, the moment, and the success. But to get over the hump, it needs to get a wee bit more out of the …Iowa State Offense Breakdown Iowa State Defense Breakdown Season Prediction, Win Total, Keys to Season

FanDuel posts betting odds to reach CFP; MSU not as much of long shot as you may think

FanDuel posts betting odds to reach CFP; MSU not as much of long shot as you may think Michigan State's odds to reach the College Football Playoff this year aren't as long as you may think. FanDuel has recently released betting odds for teams to make the College Football Playoff this upcoming season. The Spartans are in the bottom half of the Big Ten in odds compared to the rest of the league, but the actual odds are higher than I personally expected. Michigan State opened at +1800 to reach the College Football Playoff next season. I couldn't dig up last year's preseason odds for Indiana to reach the College Football Playoff but I can promise you they were longer odds than the current ones posted for Michigan State this year. Among Big Ten teams, Michigan State ranked as No. 11 for best odds to reach the College Football Playoff. Washington was right ahead of the Spartans, but by a considerable margin at +980. Right behind Michigan State was Rutgers and UCLA at +2500 and Wisconsin at +3000. A few weeks ago, I wrote about how Michigan State could be this year's Indiana and these odds only raise my thinking behind that being a possibility. I'm still not signing up for that as a likely endgame for the Spartans this fall, but these odds are at least worth considering as a long shot bet if you're into that kind of thing. Gabe Craig named NCBWA Stopper of the Year finalist

WACO, Texas (FOX 44) — The recognition keeps coming in for Baylor reliever Gabe Craig. The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association named Baylor baseball sixth-year senior right-handed pitcher Gabe Craig as a finalist for the 2025 NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award on Wednesday. The NCBWA announced thirteen of the nation's top relief pitchers finalists for the 20th annual award, which recognizes the best reliever in college baseball. Craig finished the 2025 season with a 3-0 record and earned 10 saves in 32 innings of work. He struck out 51 batters and walked just three, holding opponents to a .124 batting average. He led the country with a microscopic 0.56 ERA, a 0.50 WHIP and a 17:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Craig also ranked second nationally in H/9 (3.66) and BB/9 (0.84) and owned the sixth-best K/9 (14.34). Of his 24 appearances, Craig logged 22 scoreless outings, 14 hitless outings, and struck out at least two batters 16 times. He finished the year on a 20.1-inning scoreless streak across his last 12 appearances, a stretch that spanned back to April 4. Craig was even better in conference play, lowering his ERA to 0.49. He allowed just one run on seven hits across 18.1 innings and 12 appearances, locking down six saves. Against Big 12 opponents, Craig struck out 31 batters and walked just one. In 2025, Craig led all Big 12 pitchers with 20 games finished and did not allow an extra-base hit all season. His 10 total saves, which ranked 17th in the country, are the most by a Bear in a single season since Troy Montemayor had 11 in 2018. Already named a finalist for the 2025 College Baseball Foundation National Pitcher of the Year Award, Craig is looking to becoming the first Bear in program history to receive the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award. Craig also picked up All-Big 12 First Team accolades for the first time in his career this season. The 2025 Stopper of the Year recipient will be announced via a news conference on Friday, June 13, at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha. In the 19-year history of the award, only four players from the Big 12 have ever brought home the honor. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Eagles Add Former Clemson Standout Who Grew Up Bleeding Midnight Green

Eagles Add Former Clemson Standout Who Grew Up Bleeding Midnight Green originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Marcus Tate wasn't selected in the 2025 NFL Draft. But on Monday, he got the call that mattered most—from the team he's been rooting for since he was a kid. Advertisement The Philadelphia Eagles announced they've officially signed Tate as an undrafted free agent, bringing the former Clemson standout full circle in a storybook moment. Tate, who grew up in Sunrise, Florida, posted a heartfelt photo on social media shortly after inking the deal—a childhood picture of himself holding up an Eagles jersey. The caption read: 'Nawwww if y'all know me, this really means some, been rocking with the birds since day one I don't play bout them.' Tate (6-5, 321 pounds) was a tryout player at Philadelphia's rookie minicamp earlier this spring. After showing enough promise despite his injury history, the Eagles rewarded him with a contract, making him the second tryout player to earn a spot this offseason, joining wide receiver Giles Jackson from Washington. Advertisement A four-year contributor at Clemson, Tate played in 42 games with 37 starts and logged 2,502 offensive snaps—primarily at left guard, with occasional reps at tackle. He was named a second-team All-ACC selection in 2024 and became just the third true freshman offensive lineman in Clemson history to start a season opener, which came against Georgia in 2021. Tate underwent reconstructive surgery on his MCL and MPFL after the 2024 season, opting to play through the pain for his teammates during Clemson's run to the College Football Playoff. 'I wanted to finish the season,' Tate told TigerNet. 'I gave us the best chance to be successful, and I wanted to do whatever I could to be on the field with my guys… We had a great year.' Advertisement NFL evaluators like Dane Brugler and Lance Zierlein still saw enough talent in Tate to project him as a late-round pick, but his inability to participate in pre-draft workouts left his evaluation incomplete. Now healthy, Tate will compete with a young group of offensive linemen in Philadelphia that includes fellow rookies Drew Kendall, Myles Hinton, Cameron Williams, and Hollin Pierce. But for Tate, this signing is more than a chance to prove himself—it's a lifelong dream realized. From holding an Eagles jersey as a kid to suiting up at the NovaCare Complex, Marcus Tate's story just added its most meaningful chapter yet.
