Nick Castellanos returns to Phillies lineup after benching for 'inappropriate comment'

MIAMI (AP) — Nick Castellanos returned to the Philadelphia Phillies lineup for their game against the Miami Marlins on Wednesday after being benched the day before for 'an inappropriate comment' the outfielder made when he was pulled for a defensive replacement on Monday.
'It's gone. It's gone. We're good,' manager Rob Thomson said Wednesday of the benching, which ended Castellanos' streak of 236 consecutive starts.
Castellanos played right field and singled in four at-bats against the Marlins on Monday before Johan Rojas replaced him in the bottom of the eighth with Philadelphia up 3-1. Max Kepler moved to right and Rojas played center.
Thomson said after Monday's game he had intended to insert Rojas behind Philadelphia's right-handed pitching and indicated that could be the plan moving forward.
Thomson added Wednesday that approach 'just depends on the situations.'
When asked if he would be OK with taking Castellanos out in a similar situation on Wednesday, Thomson said, 'Probably not today."
The plan was also for Castellanos to only be benched for Tuesday's game, Thomson added. The Phillies lost that matchup 8-3.
The 33-year-old Castellanos is in his fourth season with the Phillies, who are second in the NL East. He's hitting .278 with seven homers and 36 RBIs.

Eagles' leaders sought advice from an NFL legend on staying motivated after the Super Bowl

Eagles' leaders sought advice from an NFL legend on staying motivated after the Super Bowl Philadelphia is looking to maintain their edge and star TE Dallas Goedert says he and 10-15 Eagles on the leadership council spoke with 2 time Super Bowl champ Peyton Manning The Eagles are the defending Super Bowl champions. Like any title holder, Philadelphia is looking to maintain its competitive edge in a conference with the Commanders, Vikings, Lions, Rams, and others among the biggest threats to the crown. Star tight end Dallas Goedert sat down with John Clark of NBC Sports Philadelphia and detailed a meeting between legendary quarterback Peyton Manning and the Eagles leadership council. The topic at hand centered around techniques and advice for maintaining that competitive edge that's so desperately needed. 'I would just say that it takes the work every day and you have to find little nuances,' Goedert said to Clark. 'One thing I found was interesting was he would make fake quotes and put them in the locker room because nobody was saying that they were bad or they could beat them so he put, '(my receiver) can't get off of press' and he'd put that in his receiver's locker. 'Are you serious? He said that?' And it's just finding different ways to keep yourself motivated when the negative isn't coming at you.' Manning won two Super Bowls ( 2006 with the Colts and 2015 with the Broncos) and was a postseason participant in 15 of his 17 NFL seasons. Goedert's story is similar to Jalen Hurts' moments of insight that he's received from Derek Jeter and Michael Jordan following the Super Bowl win. 2-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova announces she will retire in September

LONDON (AP) — Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova plans to retire in a few months, the Czech player said Thursday. The announcement on social media came a day after Kvitova was granted a wild card for Wimbledon. 'I am excited and very much looking forward to soak in the beauty of playing The Championships, Wimbledon one more time, a place that holds the most cherished memories in my career,' Kvitova said. 'And while I am not entirely sure yet what my hardcourt swing in the US will look like, I am intending to finish my active playing career at the US Open in New York later this summer.' The 35-year-old Kvitova reached a career-high ranking of No. 2 and also helped the Czech Republic to six trophies in the Fed Cup, which is now known as the Billie Jean King Cup. Kvitova last played at Wimbledon in 2023, and became a mother for the first time when her son was born during last year's tournament at the All England Club. Kvitova made her return to the WTA Tour in Austin, Texas, in February after 17 months away from the court and is currently ranked 572nd. Wimbledon begins June 30. ___ AP tennis:

Shubman Gill trumpets winning a test series over IPL as he begins India captaincy

Associated Press LEEDS, England (AP) — It seems like Shubman Gill's love of test cricket is as strong as it was for the great Virat Kohli, one of his predecessors as India's red-ball captain. Heading into his first assignment as test captain, Gill was asked Thursday if he'd prefer to win the upcoming five-match series in England or the title in the Indian Premier League. 'Definitely the test series, in my opinion,' Gill said, without hesitation. "You don't get many opportunities as a captain to come to England, maybe two. If you are the best of your generation, maybe three. 'IPL comes every year and you get to have a crack at it every year. In my opinion, winning a test series in England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa is bigger.' Those words will be music to the ears of Kohli, a former India captain who retired from test cricket last month after a 14-year red-ball career in which he scored 9,230 runs, including 30 centuries, and led his country in 68 matches. Kohli sees test cricket as the sport's ultimate format and remained a huge advocate amid the startling rise of the T20 game, helping to change his country's attitude toward the longer format. The next generation of players, now led by Gill, appears to have the same mindset in a new era without Kohli and Rohit Sharma, another great who recently retired from test cricket. Gill, who will take Kohli's spot at No. 4 in the batting order, was asked at a news conference Thursday — on the eve of the first test against England at Headingley — about his team's likely approach over the next few weeks against an opponent famed for its enterprising 'Bazball' strategy. He wasn't so forthcoming. 'You're going to have to wait until August to see what kind of style it's going to be,' Gill said with a smile. Adding a bit on his 'vision,' Gill said he wants to help 'create an environment in the team where everyone feels secure.' 'I personally believe everyone's best performances come when they are feeling most secure and they are feeling validated,' he said Gill said he will only finalize India's team after looking at the pitch and conditions. India last won a test series in England in 2007. ___ AP cricket: recommended
