Live action Hot Wheels racing to screens

Express Tribune09-07-2025
After the pink-heavy Barbie extravaganza of three years ago, some of you may be wistful for a film dedicated specifically to the little Hot Wheels cars of your youth. If this oddly specific desire applies to you, you are in luck: as per Variety, Wicked director Jon M Chu will direct a live-action film for Warner Bros dedicated to the beloved toy cars.
"Hot Wheels has always been about more than speed - it's about imagination, connection, and the thrill of play," Chu said in a statement. "Bringing that spirit to the big screen is an incredible opportunity. I'm excited to [ ] create an adventure that honours Hot Wheels' legacy while driving it somewhere entirely new."
According to a press release, the high-octane action film based on the Mattel toy will showcase "some of the world's hottest and sleekest vehicles." Plot details have not yet been revealed. However, Mattel Studios president Robbie Brenner expressed high hopes for Chu's ability to translate a tale of toy cars to the big screen.
"Jon's ability to craft rich, elaborate worlds with a distinct point of view makes him the ideal storyteller to bring Hot Wheels to life," Brenner said. "His films are visual spectacles - true eye candy - but what sets them apart is how he weaves unforgettable narratives within those stunning frames."
In addition to Wicked, Chu also has Crazy Rich Asians and In the Heights to his name. Meanwhile, as well as the Hot Wheels film, the director is also slated to work on a Britney Spears biopic, as well as a film project pertaining to yet another children's toy: Play-Doh.
The success of Barbie appears to have struck a chord (or opened a Pandora's box, depending on your point of view), because Hot Wheels is not the only toy film on the brink of production; also in the works are films dedicated specifically to Barney (of purple dinosaur fame) and – of all things – childhood favourite card game Uno.

Winona Ryder reveals why she was dropped from a Marlon Brando film

Winona Ryder is reflecting on how one of her most iconic early roles nearly ended her career before it began. In a recent interview with Elle UK, the actress revealed that her decision to star in the 1988 cult classic Heathers cost her a major role opposite screen legend Marlon Brando — a consequence that industry insiders warned her about. As a teenager, Ryder was advised by her team not to take the role of Veronica Sawyers, the sharp-tongued protagonist in Heathers, a dark comedy about a murderous high school clique. 'My agent at the time literally got down on her knees begging me not to do it,' Ryder previously told Harper's Bazaar. 'She said, 'You're going to destroy any chance of a career.'' Despite the warnings, Ryder took the role — and quickly saw fallout. She was dropped from the 1990 crime comedy The Freshman, which starred Brando and Matthew Broderick. 'They thought it was making fun of teen suicide. They were deeply offended and, yeah, they revoked the offer,' she said. 'I'm like, 'I can't work with Marlon Brando?' I had to stand my ground. I wasn't gonna apologize.' Heathers was polarizing at the time but ultimately became a cult favorite and a defining moment in Ryder's career. 'I never turn off Heathers if it's on. I know it basically by heart,' she said, expressing no regrets. Producer Denise Di Novi told Variety that Ryder was 'very brave and unusual' to take on such a controversial role, describing her as 'an amazing 15-year-old' who became obsessed with the script. Though The Freshman was a missed opportunity, Ryder's gamble on Heathers proved to be a bold move that solidified her reputation as a fearless and unconventional talent.

Tame Impala releases new 7-minute single

Tame Impala, the music project led by Kevin Parker, has released a new song titled 'End of Summer' on July 25, 2025. The single, which runs over seven minutes, is the first solo Tame Impala release since Parker contributed to the Barbie film soundtrack in 2023. The song blends electronic elements and layered instrumentation, featuring a gradual build and extended instrumental sections. It was released under Columbia Records, marking Parker's first Tame Impala release with the label. A music video for 'End of Summer' accompanied the release, directed by Julian Klincewicz. The video presents a split-screen format with imagery set in nature and abstract sequences, consistent with the visual style often associated with previous Tame Impala projects. Leading up to the release, Parker had teased new material on social media, including photos from the studio with the caption 'Been busy.' Tame Impala's last studio album, The Slow Rush, was released in 2020. Parker has since collaborated with multiple artists and appeared on festival lineups as both a performer and DJ.

Josh Hutcherson's Freddy's nightmare returns bloodier, bolder, and packed with new horrors

Freddy Fazbear is back, and he's meaner than ever. The first trailer for Five Nights at Freddy's 2 has fans spiralling into panic mode, with Universal and Blumhouse teasing a darker, bloodier sequel that raises the stakes far beyond the original. The new tagline says it all: Anyone can survive five nights. This time, there will be no second chances. Josh Hutcherson reprises his role as Mike Schmidt, the haunted night guard who barely survived the last round. This time, survival isn't guaranteed. The returning cast includes Matthew Lillard, Elizabeth Lail, and Piper Rubio, with director Emma Tammi also back at the helm, hinting at a more expansive and terrifying world. The first instalment became Blumhouse's biggest box office hit, raking in $297 million globally. Hutcherson admitted the scale of success caught everyone off guard. 'We hoped it would connect with audiences,' he told Variety, 'But I don't think anybody expected it to explode the way it did.' And now, the stakes are even higher. Hutcherson teased in a separate interview that the sequel is much scarier, promising new animatronics and a bigger mythology. 'There's more animatronics being brought in, different animatronics being brought in, and the world just opens up in a big way,' he said. Despite its commercial success, the first film had critics divided. Some felt it didn't fully capitalise on the terrifying animatronics. Variety's own reviewer Murtada Elfadl wrote that the film 'missed the mark on both horror and hilarity.' But FNAF 2 looks intent on correcting that. The trailer delivers a chilling, pulse-pounding look at what's to come, packed with eerie corridors, flickering lights, and menacing new machines. Five Nights at Freddy's 2 opens in cinemas on December 5, and this time, there may be no way out.
