Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has said growing "dadagiri" (bullying) by certain elements to exert pressure on industries to hire particular persons or to award contracts to them is the biggest bottleneck in Pune's development. If this mentality is not eradicated, Pune, the state's second largest city and one of the country's premier economic hubs, will not be able to achieve its true development potential, the CM warned. He was speaking at the inauguration of Pune Metropolitan Region Growth Hub (PMR G-Hub) initiative on Friday."Merely ensuring a hassle-free environment at the government level is not enough. The larger social and political ecosystem must also be conducive for businesses. Today, some people are pressuring industries to employ their recommended candidates, buy raw material from them, and allot contracts only to them. This kind of interference has become a major hurdle in Pune's progress," he asserted."If there is any bottleneck in the development of Pune, it is this dadagiri that has crept into the industrial and business sectors. It restricts an investor's freedom to choose what is feasible and economical," the CM said.Fadnavis emphasised that in order to remain globally competitive, investors need access to efficient and cost-effective services."If they are forced to operate in such an atmosphere , they will neither survive nor become globally competitive," he pointed out.

2 Appointments For Same Post In A Day Sparks Devendra Fadnavis-Eknath Shinde Rift Buzz
Mumbai: A fresh flashpoint has emerged between Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and his deputy Eknath Shinde, this time over the appointment of the General Manager of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST). On August 5, two separate appointment letters were issued by the Maharashtra government, each naming a different officer to the same post. The Urban Development Department, under Mr Shinde, appointed Ashwini Joshi as the new General Manager of BEST. However, just hours later, the General Administration Department, headed by Mr Fadnavis, issued another circular, appointing Ashish Sharma to the same position. When Mr Fadnavis was asked the reason for the confusion, he said, "I don't make decisions about BEST, it is done by the BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation)". The Urban Development Department, meanwhile, has clarified and said that no official order was issued about Ms Joshi's appointment. After the former general manager, SVR Srinivas, retired on July 31, it was "necessary to assign the post's additional charge until a regular appointment was made by the General Administration Department", over a planned protest by the BEST Workers' Union, it said. "To manage the situation concerning the workers' protest, the Urban Development Department was in the process of issuing orders to assign the additional charge of General Manager, BEST, to Ms Ashwini Joshi (IAS). However, in the meantime, the General Administration Department, through its order dated August 5, 2025, assigned the additional charge to Mr Ashish Sharma (IAS)," the department said. Kaamgar Sena Slams Government Over Confusion The Kaamgar Sena, a BEST workers' union affiliated with the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT), said the incident reflects the deep administrative confusion and reluctance among IAS officers to take over the crumbling institution. "The government issued an order assigning the additional charge of BEST to Mumbai Municipal Corporation Additional Commissioner Ashwini Joshi. It appears that she declined to take charge of BEST, as the same night Ashish Sharma, who already holds the charge of Goods and Services Tax (GST), was handed over additional charge of BEST as well," said Suhas Samant of the Kaamgar Sena. When Mr Fadnavis was asked the reason for the confusion, he said, "I don't make decisions about BEST, it is done by the BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation)". Opposition Alleges Turf War Within Government Congress state president Harshwardhan Sapkal took to X, calling the situation a "gang war" between the CM and DCM to place their loyalists in "malaidaar" or plum positions. "A gang war is ongoing between Chief Minister Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Fadnavis over the transfer of officials. For a single post, appointments of two different officials are being made on the same day. Seeing this struggle to place people in lucrative positions, the public is left wondering whether it is a government or a turf war," he wrote. The developments come as Eknath Shinde travels to Delhi for the second time in a week, fueling speculation that Mr Fadnavis' increasing control over ministers and action against Shinde's loyalists may be one of the reasons behind the visit. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray hit out at the Mahayuti Government over the two appointments and claimed that the coordination between the Chief Minister and his deputy "is already dead". "CM's GAD (The official dept for posts and transfers) has issued orders to one name as administrator, while the Gaddaarnath's UD department has issued orders to another name," he posted on X. "Shouldn't the DCM have first discussed this with CM? Shouldn't the GAD be issuing these orders? Why should our State suffer in this ego war?" asked Mr Thackeray. So the BEST is being killed by the state government on purpose, but what is worse is the coordination between CM and Gaddaarnath Mindhe is already dead. CM's GAD (The official dept for posts and transfers) has issued orders to one name as administrator, while the Gaddaarnath's… — Aaditya Thackeray (@AUThackeray) August 6, 2025 UBT-MNS Alliance Ahead of BEST Credit Society Polls In a show of strength, the BEST wing of the UBT and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena have officially come together ahead of the BEST workers' credit society elections on August 18. "As per directives from senior leadership, both leaders have now decided that every future battle within BEST will be fought jointly by the BEST Kamgar Sena and the Maharashtra Navnirman BEST Karmachari Sena," read a statement. Mumbai Congress Flags Worker Issues, Demands SIT Probe Meanwhile, the Mumbai Congress has also weighed in on the ongoing crisis. Former corporator Shital Mhatre pointed to delayed salaries, poor fire safety checks, and the lack of new bus orders, calling them "very dangerous" for the future of the undertaking. Congress also demanded an SIT to investigate alleged misappropriation of funds and the use of BEST land for private purposes.

Protest Erupts Over Khalid Ka Shivaji At Maharashtra Film Awards, 2 Men Shout Slogans
At the Maharashtra State Film Awards, two protesters disrupted the event, demanding a ban on Khalid Ka Shivaji for alleged historical distortion. Tensions ran high at the Maharashtra State Film Awards ceremony on Tuesday evening when two individuals disrupted the event with a vocal protest against the upcoming Marathi film Khalid Ka Shivaji. The incident occurred in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who was about to address the audience at the time. The two protesters stood up inside the auditorium holding placards and began chanting slogans, demanding a ban on the film and accusing it of historical distortion. 'Distortion of history must be stopped," they shouted, as security personnel quickly intervened and escorted them out of the venue. The film is scheduled for release on August 8. In response to the disruption, CM Fadnavis briefly addressed the protestors, saying, 'You have put forth your point of view, and now stop. Don't spoil the function." The protest at the awards function was not an isolated event. In the days leading up to the ceremony, Khalid Ka Shivaji had already become a flashpoint for controversy, primarily targeted by members of the Sakal Hindu Samaj, a right-wing organisation that claims the film spreads 'false history" and promotes religious divisiveness. A celebration where Marathi cinema stars and Maharashtra's heritage sparkled together — 60th & 61st Diamond Jubilee State Film Awards…मराठी चित्रपटसृष्टीचा आणि सांस्कृतिक वारशाचा गौरव करणाऱ्या 60 आणि 61 व्या हीरक महोत्सवी महाराष्ट्र राज्य मराठी चित्रपट पुरस्कार सोहळ्यातील… — Devendra Fadnavis (@Dev_Fadnavis) August 6, 2025 Law enforcement authorities have stepped in to monitor the situation. The Bhandup division of the Mumbai Police recently issued a formal notice to the administrator of a WhatsApp group linked to the Sakal Hindu Samaj, citing concerns over online mobilisation and its potential to disturb public peace. The group had allegedly encouraged members to protest the film across social media platforms. The police notice warned against such activities, stating: 'We advise you to not engage in such acts henceforth. If such messages encourage unlawful activities in the city, then you will be held responsible and strict action will be taken." In reaction, the Sakal Hindu Samaj condemned the police's action, defending its online campaign as an exercise of constitutional rights. On social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the group wrote: 'Bhandup Police Station has sent a notice to #Hindutva Karyakartas for posting a protest on social media against the film Khalid Ka Shivaji, which spreads false history and seeks to divide the minds of Hindus. @MumbaiPolice have completely surrendered to #Jihadi forces! Please stop sending such notices to those who are protesting through constitutional means (sic)." The police have not issued a public response to this statement so far. Directed by debutant filmmaker Ankur Bhatia, Khalid Ka Shivaji explores themes of identity and alienation. The narrative centres on Khalid, a young Muslim boy who struggles with a sense of exclusion due to his religious background. He finds empowerment by drawing inspiration from Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Despite the controversy, the film has also received international recognition. It was one of the few Marathi films selected for screening at the Cannes Film Festival this year. Maharashtra's Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar had earlier praised the film's achievement, stating, 'Khalid Ka Shivaji highlights the thoughts of young minds and their quest for identity in today's society." He called its Cannes selection 'a moment of pride for Marathi cinema." Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Vantara proposes a dedicated rehab centre for elephant Madhuri (Mahadevi) in Kolhapur, supports legal move for her return
Vantara has put forth a proposal to establish a satellite rehabilitation centre for the elephant Madhuri in Kolhapur's Nandani region. The proposed initiative will be developed in collaboration with the Jain Math and the Maharashtra Forest Department. If sanctioned, the new facility will feature state-of-the-art medical infrastructure, open and naturalistic enclosures, and therapy-focused amenities designed specifically for Madhuri's health and wellbeing. This move follows growing appeals from the Jain community, who hold the elephant, Madhuri in deep spiritual regard. Recognising the sentiment, Vantara has also pledged its support for any petition jointly filed by the Jain Math and the Maharashtra Government before the Supreme Court seeking Madhuri's return to Kolhapur. ET Special ' We recognise and respect the deep emotional and cultural significance Madhuri holds for the community ,' the organisation said in an official statement, adding that their involvement was solely to comply with court orders and not to disrupt religious tradition. The offer has received acknowledgement from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who shared the update on X. State Government Stands Firm With Devotees! Chaired a meeting regarding the issue of the Mahadevi elephant from Nandani Math, Taluka Shirol, District Kolhapur, in Mumbai today. Live Events Fadnavis also noted Vantara's readiness to build the specialised centre in Kolhapur if the Supreme Court grants Madhuri's return. Vantara has reiterated that the decision to relocate Madhuri was made by the Supreme Court and the Bombay High Court, and that its role was limited to housing and caring for the elephant at its Gujarat-based rehabilitation facility as directed by the courts. In a detailed statement, the organisation expressed regret that its involvement, though legally mandated, had caused concern within the Jain community. It further clarified that the proposed Kolhapur facility is not a bid for recognition but a response aligned with any future court directives. Should approval be granted, the planned centre would include advanced features like hydrotherapy ponds, laser therapy units, chain-free open enclosures, and 24/7 veterinary services tailored to Madhuri's specific needs. ' Let us move forward not in opposition but in unity, with love for Madhuri at the heart of it all ,' the statement concludes.
