Dayton tops VCU 79-76 to prevent Rams from clinching Atlantic 10 Conference regular-season title
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Javon Bennett scored 22 points and Dayton prevented VCU from clinching the Atlantic 10 Conference regular-season title with a 79-76 victory on Friday night, ending the Rams' nine-game win streak.
The Rams (25-6, 15-3) lead second-place George Mason by a half-game. The Patriots end the season at Richmond on Saturday. The Flyers (22-9, 12-6) currently sit in third place, a half-game in front of Loyola Chicago and Saint Joseph's. The Ramblers travel to play Massachusetts on Saturday and the Hawks play at La Salle.
Bennett shot 6 of 15 from the field, including 5 for 10 from 3-point range, and went 5 for 5 from the free-throw line for Dayton. Malachi Smith totaled 13 points and seven assists. Enoch Cheeks added 12 points.
The Rams were led by Joe Bamisile with 18 points and eight rebounds. Max Shulga added 16 points and nine rebounds. Zeb Jackson also scored 16.
Bennett scored nine points in the first half for Dayton, who led 28-27 at the break. Dayton used a 12-3 second-half run come back from a three-point deficit and take the lead at 66-60 with 2:51 remaining.

Arizona State football's Jordyn Tyson lone Sun Devil on AP preseason All-America teams
The preseason accolades keep coming in for Arizona State junior wide receiver Jordyn Tyson. Tyson, who had 75 catches for 1,101 yards and 10 touchdowns before being injured late last season, is among three wide receivers on the Associated Press Preseason All-America first team. Tyson joins Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith and Alabama's Ryan Williams as the receivers on the list. Utah offensive tackle Spencer Fano was the only other Big 12 player to make the first team on offense or defense. No players from the conference made the second team. The teams are determined by voting from college football media members. Big 12 football bowl projections: Arizona State returns to College Football Playoff Arizona State's Sam Leavitt, who has also earned some preseason accolades, was left off the list at quarterback with the AP choosing Clemson's Cade Klubnik as its first-team QB and LSU's Garrett Nussmeier as its second-team selection at the position. Rams sign OL Mike McAllister
The Rams signed offensive lineman Mike McAllister to a one-year deal, the team announced Tuesday. The Rams also announced they waived wide receiver Mario Williams with an injury designation and placed outside linebacker Keir Thomas II on injured reserve. McAllister returns to the Rams after spending time on their offseason and practice squad rosters in 2023 and 2024. He entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2023. McAllister has never played in a regular-season game. He played five seasons at Youngstown State, appearing in 30 games for the Penguins with all 17 starts coming at center.
