RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Javon Bennett scored 22 points and Dayton prevented VCU from clinching the Atlantic 10 Conference regular-season title with a 79-76 victory on Friday night, ending the Rams' nine-game win streak.
The Rams (25-6, 15-3) lead second-place George Mason by a half-game. The Patriots end the season at Richmond on Saturday. The Flyers (22-9, 12-6) currently sit in third place, a half-game in front of Loyola Chicago and Saint Joseph's. The Ramblers travel to play Massachusetts on Saturday and the Hawks play at La Salle.

The Sports Report: Matthew Stafford's back seems to be improving

From Gary Klein: Matthew Stafford's second day of practice lacked the anticipation and drama of the first. But Tuesday's performance was a milestone nonetheless for the star quarterback and a Rams team with designs on a Super Bowl title. The biggest takeaway: Stafford's injured back responded positively to Monday's one-hour workout, enabling the 17th-year pro to play with even more confidence as the Rams prepare for their Sept. 7 opener against the Houston Texans. 'The reality is we're trying to get our hands on this and get him to feel as good as possible,' coach Sean McVay said. 'Backs can be a volatile thing. This is definitely positive progress. … It certainly is trending in a positive direction for us.' Continue reading here From Kevin Baxter: Mookie Betts was the first Dodgers position player out on the field Tuesday, walking to a spot near the third-base foul line and kneeling on a mat before a coach, who began hitting soft ground balls to his right and left. It's a drill Betts does regularly to improve his defense. Betts' defense, however, really isn't a problem for the Dodgers. A six-time Gold Glove winner in right field, Betts moved to shortstop full-time this season, turning his old position over to Teoscar Hernández. And his defense has been a problem. But Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he isn't planning any changes to his lineup for the time being. 'Are we playing our best defensive lineup? No,' Roberts said. 'But I would say there's very few teams in the big leagues playing their best defensive lineup every night. Even in a postseason race, you've still got to score.' The Dodgers are definitely in a postseason race and Hernández absolutely helps them score, ranking second on the team in home runs (20) and RBIs (75) after going two for five with a run and an RBI in Tuesday's 11-4 rout of the Colorado Rockies. He also made two nice running catches. But then the Dodgers didn't need much defense Tuesday, pounding out 18 hits with every player in the lineup reaching base as least once. Newcomer Alex Call led the way with a career-high four hits, including a home run and a double, scoring three runs and driving in two others while falling a triple shy of the cycle. Jose Trevino scored on a sacrifice fly by TJ Friedl and Gavin Lux followed with an RBI double off Kenley Jansen (5-3) in the ninth inning to give Cincinnati a 6-4 lead. Miguel Andujar was three for four with a double and two RBIs. Greene gave up three runs and six hits and walked none. Luis Mey (2-0) pitched the eighth inning and gave up Jo Adell's second solo homer of the game but got the win. Shearer scored two goals that day in a 3-3 draw with Crystal Palace. But he had no idea that season would give birth to the most dominant force in the history of club soccer — and perhaps the most dominant force in the history of international sports. 'There's no way anyone could have predicted back in 1992 that it was going to be this incredible, huge, gigantic force that it's become,' said Shearer, who would go on to become the leading scorer in EPL history, of the Premier League. 'It is sort of chalk and cheese in terms of where it was then to where it is now.' That's an English way of saying the league, which kicked off a new season Friday, has progressed. Arizona State football's Jordyn Tyson lone Sun Devil on AP preseason All-America teams

The preseason accolades keep coming in for Arizona State junior wide receiver Jordyn Tyson. Tyson, who had 75 catches for 1,101 yards and 10 touchdowns before being injured late last season, is among three wide receivers on the Associated Press Preseason All-America first team. Tyson joins Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith and Alabama's Ryan Williams as the receivers on the list. Utah offensive tackle Spencer Fano was the only other Big 12 player to make the first team on offense or defense. No players from the conference made the second team. The teams are determined by voting from college football media members. Big 12 football bowl projections: Arizona State returns to College Football Playoff Arizona State's Sam Leavitt, who has also earned some preseason accolades, was left off the list at quarterback with the AP choosing Clemson's Cade Klubnik as its first-team QB and LSU's Garrett Nussmeier as its second-team selection at the position. The SEC had 12 players make the first team, while the Big Ten had seven. The ACC had four, with the Big 12 getting two, the same as Notre Dame, which doesn't belong to a conference. The AP preseason Top 25 poll ranked Arizona State No. 11 in the nation earlier this month.
