I came face-to-face with ISIS gunman and locked eyes with him as he opened fire – I'm still haunted by horrors I saw
TREMBLING with terror, I cowered as gunshots rang out under our hotel window. Then, just when I thought I couldn't feel more afraid, I heard banging on our door. 'Open up!' a man shouted. 'I have a key. I'm coming in!' 8 8 8 Knowing it was too dangerous to speak, my husband Baron and I exchanged glances. My heart lurched as the door handle rattled – I knew I was maybe only moments from death, but I also knew I would not give in without a fight. Five days earlier, in June 2015, Baron and I had checked in to our favourite hotel, The Imperial Marhaba. We'd holidayed in Tunisia for the past 10 years and it was our fifth time staying here. Moments from death We'd noticed that it was much quieter than usual – many restaurants and shops were closed, and the beach was empty. The hotel seemed quieter, too, with fewer staff and activities. We didn't think much of it at the time, but later the press speculated there had been prior warning of the attack that was not heeded. On our fifth day, we were at the pool preparing to walk down to the beach bar for lunch, when we heard a loud popping sound coming from that direction. Tunisia terror attack I wasn't worried, as it was a popular spot for weddings, so there were often fireworks. But then we heard screaming and saw people running. 'Run as fast as you can back to the room and don't stop!' Baron shouted. I set off, but there was a wave of people dashing in different directions, screaming and yelling, and the gunshots were getting closer. I stopped for a moment and, to my horror, spotted a man with a gun. He looked directly at me. Somehow, adrenalin got me moving again and I stumbled towards the hotel doors. Inside our room, Baron told me to hide in the bathroom, while he moved furniture to barricade us in. Outside, we could hear gunshots, grenades and screaming. I thought of my parents and all my family back home. Would I ever see them again? Then the banging on the door started. It was terrifying. 8 8 8 Was it the gunman? We had no way of knowing, but after what felt like an age, he moved on. Over our balcony, we saw military boats arriving to help. But we also saw so many bodies and injured people being carried into the hotel. It was devastating. Three and a half hours after the attack began, we learned the gunman had been shot dead and the so-called Islamic State had claimed responsibility for the attack. We were asked to gather in the hotel reception, and on the way down, we had to flatten ourselves against the wall and check every corner and stairway. Along with crowds of petrified holidaymakers, we waited until around midnight to be taken to the airport. On the flight, I began having panic attacks as I replayed in my mind what had happened. Once home, I expected to feel relief, but I still didn't feel safe – I couldn't even go upstairs on my own. I was haunted by the gunshots. Baron took me to A&E and I was referred to the crisis team, who looked after me at home for 10 days, and we had interviews with counter-terrorism police, too. Afterwards, I had to try to rebuild my life, but the trauma was debilitating. I couldn't bear to be in crowds, even with people I knew, and I couldn't go shopping or to work. I had nightmares and constant flashbacks to the attack. And although I knew I was lucky to survive, I felt guilt, too, as I'd made it out alive, when so many had died (38 people died, including 30 Brits, and 39 were left wounded). I had several years of counselling and was urged to put the attack behind me. But how could I just forget about it? It helped me accept the memories would always be with me, but I can spot the triggers and how to deal with them. Last year, we finally booked another beach holiday – this time to Cyprus. I was anxious, but I enjoyed the trip and I was so proud of myself. It's another hurdle I've overcome. In many ways, the attack has made me stronger and more compassionate, and it's made me realise how precious life really is. 8

Ryanair charged me £100 after saying flight was ‘too full' – even though I had a ticket & was first in line to board
A COUPLE were slapped with a £100 fine by Ryanair after the girlfriend refused to leave her boyfriend at the airport. Scott McCormick and his girlfriend Helena Boshwick, both 33, were looking forward to jetting off on a foreign jaunt to Mallorca from Birmingham Airport for a sun-kissed week away. 2 The couple opted not to reserve seats, which range between £4.50 and £33 depending on where travellers choose to sit. As they queued up to board, a Ryanair staffer approached the two and reportedly asked them to step aside and told them there was only one seat left. Scott and Helena were left with a big decision to make - Helena could board the flight on her own or turn the offer down and stay with her partner at the airport. She chose the latter, and found she would have to fork out an eye-watering amount for the privilege. When the couple returned to the check-in desk, they were reportedly told they still had to pay for one of the tickets, while Scott insists he never received a refund. As a result, Scott claims he had to shell out an additional £100 for a new ticket and a four-hour wait for the next flight out of Birmingham. A spokesperson for Ryanair said: "This flight from Birmingham to Palma de Mallorca (1 May) was not 'overbooked' – it was scheduled to operate on a 737-8200 (197 seats) but for operational reasons had to be swapped to a 737-800 aircraft (189 seats). "As a result, one passenger was unable to travel on this flight, and was reaccommodated onto the next available flight to Palma de Mallorca. "Mr. McCormick's travel companion was not refused boarding but chose not to board and travel on this flight from Birmingham to Palma de Mallorca and was required to pay a Missed Departure fee (£100) to be booked onto the next available flight. "Mr. McCormick was notified by email on the day of travel (1 May) that he was entitled to claim back reasonable receipted expenses, however Mr. McCormick has yet to submit any expense receipts to Ryanair.' After recounting his experience on social media, many suggested that Scott and Helena were targeted because they hadn't reserved seats - implying that a common strategy used by many to keep fares low could end up costing more. Scott, hailing from Birmingham, West Midlands, explained: "We checked in the night before and we didn't reserve a seat but you normally just get a random one. "Me and my partner thought it's not that much of a problem if we're not sitting together for a two-hour flight, we're adults here. "We arrived, everything proceeded as usual, went through security as normal, went to the gate after waiting a couple of hours and we were the first ones at the gate ready for boarding. "The lady scanned our boarding passes and told us to step to the side for a second. That moment was a red flag, I thought, 'there's something happening here'. "We stepped aside and watched all the people board the flight. I asked her to tell us what is going to happen and she said 'no'. "When everyone boarded, she said, 'the plane is full, there's only one seat remaining and we will have to reimburse you for the other seat or you'll have to get on the next flight.' "We were having a meltdown at this point. There was no compassion or care whatsoever. "After going back and forth we said we're not going to take separate flights and be in separate countries for hours. We said we wanted to get on the next flight together. "They said 'you can do that, we will fully reimburse both tickets and put you on the next flight for free'."

Vacations in turmoil as JetBlue slashes flights
Published: Updated: Vacations have been thrown into turmoil after JetBlue announced plans to slash summer flights. The budget airline is launching new cost-saving measures after weak travel demand is threatening its bottom line. JetBlue admitted that its chances of breaking even this year are 'unlikely', in a memo seen by Reuters. As a result the carrier is planning to wind down less popular routes and cutting its leadership team, CEO Joanna Geraghty told employees in the note. 'We're hopeful demand and bookings will rebound, but even a recovery won't fully offset the ground we've lost this year and our path back to profitability will take longer than we'd hoped,' Geraghty said. US airlines have taken a hit after President Trump's aggressive trade policies and border crackdowns have seen a significant pullback in travel to the US. JetBlue is not alone in scaling back capacity ahead of the summer travel season, with United also cutting four in every 100 of its domestic flights . 'While most airlines are feeling the impact, it's especially frustrating for us, as we had hoped to reach break-even operating margin this year, which now seems unlikely,' Geraghty explained. JetBlue is under additional financial strain as it us undergoing inspections of some of its engines, which has grounded a number of its aircraft. In other efforts to cut costs the airline is planning to park six of its Airbus jets instead of retrofitting them as initially planned. It comes after JetBlue previously pulled its full year forecast in April to readjust to the new demand environment. The company also previously announced its plans to make a $3 billion saving by deferring buying 44 new Airbus jets. JetBlue's shares are down more than 44 percent so far this year. Earlier this year United announced it would be axing flights due to a dip in demand for US travel. 'The softer economic situation is creating softer demand for travel,' CEO Scott Kirby told investors on the airline's first quarter earnings call in April. United said it also saw flights coming out of Canada see a 9 percent dip, with the rest of international demand coming in to the US down 6 percent. Canadians have been boycotting US travel after Trump threatened to make America's northern neighbor the '51st state.' As a result air travel dropped 13.5 percent in March compared to the same time last year. Flair Airlines was forced to abandoned its routes from Vancouver and Calgary to Phoenix, Arizona as a result of such low demand. Tourist hotspots that rely heavily on Canadian visitors, such as Buffalo, New York and Old Orchard Beach in Maine have seen dramatic drop-offs in visits. Some hotspots such as Palm Springs in California have even hung signs begging Canadians not to boycott them .
