Mobile tariff design skewed in India; rich paying less: Airtel MD
A customer needs to pay ₹ 199 for a month-long connection which comes with unlimited local, STD, roaming calls and a 2GB data limit.
By paying ₹ 100 more, a subscriber on Airtel can get 1 GB data per day and it goes up to 3 GB data per day with plans starting from ₹ 449 onwards.
"The architecture of pricing in India is quite skewed. At the entry level itself or just above the entry level, you get so much data allowance, calling and messaging, that you really don't have any reason to upgrade. It's just an unfortunate situation where people who can afford to pay, the rich, are paying less and the poor, you know, we don't need to charge the poor anymore," Bharti Airtel Vice-Chairman and MD, Gopal Vittal said.
He was replying to a question on tariffs during the company's earnings call for the first quarter of the current fiscal.
Bharti Airtel has posted a 43 per cent year-on-year increase in its consolidated profit to ₹ 5,947.9 crore in the quarter ended June 2025 mainly on account of an increase in customer base.
Vittal said if India had a more sensible pricing architecture like Indonesia, ARPU (average revenue per user) would have been substantially higher than where the country's telecom industry is at present without any pain to customers at the low end.
As per UK-based data price information platform Cable.co.uk, average data price in India was around 16 cents while in Indonesia it was around 28 cents in 2023.
Bharti Airtel India operations average revenue per user (ARPU), a key matrix to determine a telecom operator's growth, in India increased to ₹ 250 during the June 2025 quarter under review compared to ₹ 211 in the same period a year ago.
The mobile data consumption on Airtel's India network increased by 13.4 per cent to 26.9 GB per customer per month.
The customer base of Airtel's Home Services segment, which includes fixed broadband services, grew 37.7 per cent on YoY basis to 1.09 crore but the ARPU in the segment declined by 6.1 per cent to ₹ 537 in June 2025 quarter.
Consolidated revenue from operations of Bharti Airtel increased by 28.4 per cent to ₹ 49,463 crore during the reporting quarter from ₹ 38,506.4 crore in the June quarter of the last year.

Sensex tumbles 1% as negative global cues haunt investors
Mumbai: Equity benchmark index Sensex tumbled nearly one per cent to slip below the 80,000 level on Friday as growing concerns over the impact of the additional US tariff and unabated foreign fund outflows unnerved investors. Deep losses in market heavyweights Reliance Industries, HDFC Bank and Bharti Airtel also added pressure on equities, traders said. The 30-share BSE Sensex tanked 765.47 points or 0.95 per cent to settle at 79,857.79. During the day, it tumbled 847.42 points or 1.05 per cent to 79,775.84. As many as 2,507 stocks declined while 1,521 advanced and 145 remained unchanged on the BSE. The 50-share NSE Nifty dropped 232.85 points or 0.95 per cent to 24,363.30. Extending losing streak for the sixth consecutive week, the BSE benchmark dropped 742.12 points or 0.92 per cent, and the Nifty declined 202.05 points or 0.82 per cent. 'The Indian equity market exhibited downward movement, closing at a three-month low amid growing concerns over the impact of US tariffs on Indian exports. FIIs remained net sellers, intensifying the pressure on domestic indices. The pessimism was broad-based, with realty and metals bearing the biggest brunt,' Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited, said. From the Sensex firms, Bharti Airtel, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Axis Bank and Reliance Industries were among the laggards. 'Selling intensified, with the Sensex ending below the psychological 80k mark, as analysts believe that once the stiff tariff penalty on Indian goods by the Trump administration comes into effect, India's growth could be hit going ahead,' Prashanth Tapse, Senior VP (Research), Mehta Equities Ltd, said. However, NTPC, Titan, Trent, ITC and Bajaj Finserv managed to be in green territory. The BSE midcap gauge tanked 1.56 per cent, and the smallcap index dropped 1.03 per cent.

SSC to reconduct Phase XIII exams for 55,000 candidates: Check details here
The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) will reconduct the Selection Posts/Phase XIII Computer-Based Examination (CBE) 2025 for over 55,000 candidates following the discovery of gaps in the examination log data. The retest is scheduled for August 29, 2025. According to SSC, the decision was taken to ensure fairness and transparency in line with the Commission's mandate and Supreme Court-mandated reforms in recruitment processes. First exam under the new CBE framework The Phase XIII examinations, conducted from July 24 to August 1 across 194 venues nationwide, were the first to be held under a revised CBE model as directed by the Hon'ble Supreme Court in WP (Civil) 234 of 2018. In a major reform, Aadhaar-based authentication was introduced for both candidates and examination personnel to counter impersonation and malpractice. Out of 11.50 lakh applicants, more than 5.50 lakh candidates appeared for tests at the Matric, Higher Secondary, and Graduate levels. Technical disruptions and additional shifts Technical and operational issues disrupted examinations for several candidates, leading to rescheduling within the original July 24–August 1 window. On August 2, the Commission held additional sessions for nearly 8,000 affected candidates. After a detailed analysis of the logs from all shifts up to August 2, SSC found irregularities for approximately 55,000 candidates. Their earlier test attempts will not be considered, and they will be given another chance on August 29. Exam day and admit card details SSC will assign test centres based on the candidates' earlier city preferences, subject to availability. Admit cards for the retest will be available for download from August 26. The Commission confirmed that the question challenge process for Phase XIII will begin only after the retest has concluded. Live for Swadeshi, die for nation: Yogi Adityanath
Making a strong Swadeshi pitch, chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday linked economic self-reliance to nation-building and cautioned that purchasing foreign goods leads to our wealth being drained abroad, which in turn can fuel terrorism and extremism. 'On August 9, 1925, the Indian freedom fighters had stopped the British from taking the treasure out of India with the Train Action. It was ₹4600 that the Indians snatched and the British spent over ₹10 lakh to get these freedom fighters captured and hanged without any judicial process,' the chief minister said in his address. Bravehearts like Pandit Ram Prasad Bismil, Ashfaqulla Khan, Thakur Roshan Singh and Rajendranath Lahiri were executed without trial. Chandrashekhar Azad evaded capture by the British, choosing instead to fight valiantly and embrace martyrdom, he said. He called upon people to purchase Swadeshi goods and gifts during upcoming festivals. 'When we buy Swadeshi, our people, artisans, workers and entrepreneurs get work. This money is thereby spent upon development of the country and for progress. But if we purchase foreign goods we pay for the items and we face terrorism later due to that purchase only,' the chief minister said. 'Swadeshi should be the aim and mantra of our lives. We will live for Swadeshi and die for our country. When India advances with this spirit of patriotism, no power in the world can harm us.' The chief minister emphasised that the national flag should fly proudly over every household. Through the Tiranga Yatra, we must carry forward the message of national unity, defeating every divisive agenda, he said. 'If we move ahead with this determination, this Independence Day celebration will once again unite every Indian with the soul of the nation,' he said. He reiterated the Prime Minister's message and said that every Indian has always honoured the courage and valour of the Indian Army. Quoting a recent example, he said the bravery of Indian soldiers during Operation Sindoor, launched in response to an enemy-imposed conflict, has earned global recognition for India's strength. He further urged every resident of Uttar Pradesh to visit Gandhi Ashram on October 2 and take a pledge to purchase Khadi. Recalling landmark revolutionary events such as the Mainpuri Action (1915), Chauri Chaura incident (1922) and Kakori Train Action (1925), he said every achievement has a price, and our ancestors paid it with their sacrifices. Now, it is our responsibility to build the India of their dreams.
