Florida Man Arrested Decades After 1986 Killing of Beloved Real Estate Developer Who Was Shot in Office
Jeffrey Taylor, 64, was taken into custody Thursday, April 24, in connection with the killing of 49-year-old Shirley Brant. He is charged with second-degree murder with a firearm.
'The resolution of this case reflects our department's commitment to justice, no matter how much time has passed,' said Chief of Police Juan Pinillos. 'We hope this arrest brings a measure of closure to the Brant family and all who knew her.'
Authorities allege Taylor left fingerprints at the crime scene but they were never entered into the Automated Fingerprint Identification System "due to not meeting certain criteria at the time," North Miami police said in a press release.
Investigators resubmitted the fingerprints for analysis and allegedly matched the prints to Taylor in March.
Brant was on the phone with a client in her real estate office in North Miami Beach when two intruders entered on June 13, 1986.
A temporary employee told police she heard Brant scream and then witnessed one of the males attempting to take the phone away from her.

The witness then heard Brant say, "Don't shoot!" before she was shot, North Miami Beach police detective Pam Denham previously told PEOPLE.
Police allege Taylor pulled the trigger.
At the time, the witness told the police that the two men were 'nicely dressed,' Denham said. 'They were in dress pants and a long-sleeve collared shirt. Maybe that was because they didn't want to stand out and they wanted to look professional.'
The two men absconded with cash and credit cards before fleeing the scene.
Brant's death devastated her four children as well as her husband, local dentist Dr. Lawrence Brant, who "never got over it," Brant's son, Dr. Steven Brant, previously told PEOPLE. "He missed my mom terribly, terribly. He hired a private eye to look over things and to see that everything was done."(Shirley Brant's grandson, who is the nephew of Steven Brant, is an editor at PEOPLE.)
Steven Brant described his mother as 'a very, very talented woman,' who sang on cruise ships with her sister in the 1960s before becoming a real estate agent in the early 70s.
He last saw his mother two weeks before her murder. 'We had a wonderful dinner at a restaurant in Gainesville," he said. "And we were all sitting around the table. She passed away one week before her 50th birthday. She said she had seen a birthday card about 50th birthdays, and she said on the card it said, 'It's nifty to be 50.' But she never made it to 50.'

Sheriff Says Someone 'Sympathetic' to Travis Decker Is Possibly Helping Him Evade Law Enforcement (Exclusive)
The manhunt for Travis Decker began on June 2 after his three daughters were found asphyxiated in a remote area of the Rock Island Campground in Chelan County, TO KNOW The manhunt for Travis Decker began on June 2 after his three daughters were found dead in a remote area of the Rock Island Campground in Chelan County, Wash. Since then, the Chelan County Sheriff's Office, along with search and rescue organizations, have conducted an exhaustive search for Decker in the surrounding counties Chelan County Sheriff Mike Morrison tells PEOPLE that there's the "potential that he could have someone that was just more sympathetic to him and is providing him assistance"As the search for Travis Decker — the man suspected of killing his three daughters nearly two months ago — continues, the Washington Sheriff leading the investigation says it's possible someone is helping the former combat veteran evade the law. 'Certainly, [there's the] potential that he could have someone that was just more sympathetic to him and is providing him assistance,' Chelan County Sheriff Mike Morrison tells PEOPLE. 'We put the message out that we don't think that's a wise decision, but we get that everyone's going to make their own choices.' The sheriff's office, along with search and rescue organizations, have conducted an exhaustive search for Decker in the surrounding counties. The manhunt began on June 2 after his three daughters, Paityn, 9, Evelyn, 8, and Olivia, 5, were found asphyxiated in a remote area of the Rock Island Campground in Chelan County, Wash. Decker's pickup truck was found at the campground, but the 32-year-old murder suspect was nowhere to be found. Decker had picked up the girls on May 30 for a court-approved visit but failed to return them to their mother. The mom, Whitney Decker, reported her daughters missing to police later that night, setting off a frantic search for the four missing people. On Friday, July 25, the Chelan County Sheriff's Office said they were scaling back the search for Decker due to a 'decrease in leads and tips' into Decker's location. The office said 'there is insufficient information to suggest that he is alive, nor if he is deceased." Morrison tells PEOPLE 'there's still a potential' that Decker is alive. Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Sign up for for breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases. 'Unless he's accounted for, there's still the potential that he could be alive and still actively fleeing from us,' he says. 'Right now, you're in a pretty leisurely time for our county that you could be outdoors and probably live decently comfortable." "We get that the probability that if he is still out there, he's going to be looking to obtain supplies, food, other resources, which right now we're not getting any reports of anything like that missing," Morrison says. "The probability of him just surviving off foraging or trapping — not likely." Morrison says he can't discount the possibility that Decker may have hitchhiked out of the area or gotten picked up by someone. 'Could be a potential,' he says. 'There are roads in the area that he could have made it to. And if someone wasn't paying attention, they might've provided a ride to him not knowing what he was associated with. Or maybe they did know, and they did provide him a ride.' The most recent search for Decker was conducted in the Blewett Pass area in the Wenatchee Mountains. There were two possible sightings of Decker — one in June and another in July — but authorities have since confirmed they were not him. Authorities have also previously said Decker may have attempted to cross into Canada because he allegedly searched "how to relocate to Canada" online, according to a U.S. Marshals Service affidavit obtained by PEOPLE. 'We're frustrated because, certainly, we'd like to have closure not only for our community, but for the family,' says Morrison. 'And with the amount of resources we put in there, I was kind of hopeful that we would've gotten something. This could be a longer, drawn-out search and we're still optimistic that we will get closure." Decker is wanted on charges of first-degree murder and kidnapping. "During a routine activity to prepare food for the leopards, which took place as part of a behind-the-scenes tour for visitors of the zoo, a leopard managed to escape from the leopard house into the inner courtyard and attacked one of the zoo employees," the Biblical Zoo said in a statement shared with The Jerusalem Post. Nuri suffered "severe injuries" and was reportedly already unconscious when emergency responders arrived on the scene. Magen David Adom (MDA) paramedic Dov Shari told The Jerusalem Post that responders "immediately attempted to stop the bleeding," noting that the injuries were on his neck. 'We gave him life-saving treatment, including CPR, before he was evacuated for further treatment," they said. Despite their attempts, Nuri was pronounced dead at Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center after "prolonged resuscitation efforts," the hospital told Ynetnews. In their statement shared with The Jerusalem Post, the zoo stressed that "at no point was there any physical danger to the visitors, who were protected behind a glass window." They noted that they were unsure of how the leopard escaped its enclosure and that they would be investigating with the help of local police. The outlet reported that the leopard was not injured in attempts to recover Nuri from the enclosure.
