After Kushinagar sackings, UP begins scrutiny of 69k asst teacher recruitment
Following the dismissal of 20 assistant teachers in Kushinagar for using fake academic documents, the Uttar Pradesh education department has initiated a state-wide verification of appointments made under the 2018 Assistant Teacher Recruitment Examination (ATRE), officials said on Saturday. The dismissal, formalised through a government order issued on May 21, flagged discrepancies in the academic records of the teachers.
'We have written a letter to all 75 basic shiksha adhikaris (BSAs) of the state,' said Kanchan Verma, director general, school education, on Saturday. 'Kushinagar responded swiftly, resulting in cancellation of 20 appointments. Other districts have now been asked to begin verification.'
Verma said the eligibility criteria clearly required candidates to pass the qualifying exam in a single attempt. 'The teachers whose appointments were cancelled had cleared some papers through compartment exams or in second attempts, which makes them ineligible.'
'The appointments in question were part of the 69,000 assistant teacher recruitment drive notified on December 1, 2018,' BSA Kushinagar said. During a recent document check in Kushinagar, irregularities in academic records were found in multiple cases. Further examination confirmed that 20 candidates had submitted forged documents, said officials.
A department-level investigation has been launched, and similar checks are now underway in other districts. 'The process of document verification is on, and action will be taken wherever discrepancies are found,' Verma said.
Referring to previous court observations, she said the submission of fake documents cannot be treated as a clerical mistake and will invite strict departmental action.
Officials said the verification across districts will take time as thousands of appointments under the 2018 drive need to be reviewed.

Gurgaon: A chemist and a lab operator have been arrested for allegedly selling medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) kits illegally. Two separate FIRs were lodged against the accused at Sector 10 and Sector 9A police stations, police said on Friday. The pharmacy was sealed and medical officials have initiated proceedings to cancel its licence. District drugs control officer Suresh Verma said the department received information about illegal sales of MTP kits – also called abortion kits – from Juneja Chemist, located near Civil Hospital. A pregnant woman, who was deployed as a decoy customer, visited the pharmacy, where the chemist provided her with the kit in exchange for Rs 1,000. "The chemist was arrested from the spot. An FIR was registered against him," Verma said. During the operation, enforcement team discovered that another MTP kit was also being sold at a nearby pathology lab. A second decoy customer was sent to the lab, where she was able to purchase the kit for just Rs 100. The team then raided the facility and arrested the operator. Kolkata police tighten passport checks to crack down on illegal immigrants and ID fraud; address checks mandatory KOLKATA: Breaking the syndicates dealing with illegal immigration by identifying the gang heads and double-checking all received ID documents from the source to examine their authenticity were the two reasons behind the changes introduced in passport verification, said Kolkata Police commissioner Manoj Verma on Thursday, stressing the aim was to ensure illegal immigrants could not stay on. "We have re-evaluated the passport verification system. Our primary target is to identify syndicate members and individuals involved in such illegal activities. Wherever documents are getting used, we are scrutinising and verifying them right back to their source," Verma. "The accused at times use different addresses for different cases. We are cross-checking Aadhaar addresses with other ID documents." Verma was speaking to reporters after planting saplings at the Alipore Bodyguard Lines on World Environment Day on Thursday. He urged citizens to plant at least 10 trees as a "contribution to society". Going back to passport verification, Verma pointed out that no new passport would be issued nor any old one renewed without an address visit. Even cops asking passport applicants to visit police stations would face action, Verma said. The SOP says all documents of a passport applicant will be uploaded on the portal to root out discrepancy. Lucknow: Man accused of raping 3-year-old killed in gunfight with police
A man, accused of raping a three-year-old girl, was killed in a gunfight with Lucknow police on Friday, The Indian Express reported. The man, identified as Deepak Verma, had allegedly abducted the minor while she was asleep with her parents near Alambagh metro station in Lucknow district the previous night, the newspaper reported. On Thursday, the parents filed a complaint at the Alambagh Police Station alleging that their daughter was raped, PTI reported. After a case was registered, five police teams were formed to probe the incident, the news agency quoted Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Zone) Ashish Srivastava as saying. A reward of Rs 1 lakh was also declared for any information leading to the arrest of the accused, who worked as a water vendor in the area. The accused was reportedly identified through the registration number of the vehicle he used during the alleged crime. The number was captured on a security camera at the Alambagh metro station. A police team went to his house but did not find him there, The Indian Express reported. The police, later, received information that Verma was trying to flee the district. A team reached the spot and tried to stop him, but the accused opened fire, PTI quoted Srivastava as saying. The police team fired in retaliation and Verma was injured in the exchange. He was taken to hospital where he died during treatment, Lucknow Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Mamta Rani Chaudhary told The Indian Express.
