India-Pak engagement only on battlefield: Abhishek

Time of India28-07-2025
Kolkata: Trinamool national general secretary
Abhishek Banerjee
on Monday said India shouldn't engage with Pakistan in any form, including sports, hours before he was leaving for Delhi to attend the monsoon session of Parliament.
"India must not engage with Pakistan in any sphere. The only engagement we should have with Pakistan is on the battlefield, and the only prize worth winning is Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK)," the Diamond Harbour MP said in a social media post.
His comments come a day after the Asia Cup 2025 schedule was announced in which India and Pakistan have been placed in the same group. The rival nations are set to play each other on Sept 14.

Banerjee said calls to keep politics out of sport must stop, adding that attempts to allow sporting ties with a nation allegedly involved in proxy wars wasn't diplomacy but "a bloody betrayal".
"Let justice, not entertainment be our goal. If there is to be a match with Pakistan, let it be fought at the LoC and let PoK be the only trophy we seek," Banerjee said in his post where he also referenced the recent Pahalgam attack that claimed 26 lives.
"Anything less is an insult to our martyrs and injustice and betrayal to the victims of Pahalgam. Period!" he added.
Later, while speaking to reporters at the Kolkata airport, Banerjee said Trinamool MPs will continue to speak in Bengali in Parliament and accused BJP-governed states, such as Rajasthan, Gujarat and UP, of engaging in systematic violence and discrimination against Bengalis.
Asked for his views on illegal immigration, Banerjee said managing borders falls under the jurisdiction of the Union ministry of home affairs, BSF and CRPF.
He demanded the resignation of the Union home minister and chiefs of the BSF and IB for what he called "repeated security failures".
On the upcoming assembly polls in Bengal, Banerjee said if BJP continues on its current political path, the verdict in the polls will be even more decisive than in 2021 and 2024. "Those torturing the people of Bengal, remember — the lesson in 2026 will be even more severe," he said.

‘Ganga has come to wash your feet': Uttar Pradesh minister's remark sparks controversy

Amid the flood situation in several parts of the state, Uttar Pradesh fisheries minister Sanjay Nishad's remark during a visit to a flood-hit village in Kanpur Dehat district's Bhognipur tehsil has triggered strong public and political reactions. Sanjay Nishad is the Uttar Pradesh minister for fisheries and the founder-president of the Nishad Party. (FLE PHOTO) 'Ganga maiya comes to wash the feet of her sons. Just her darshan ensures direct passage to heaven,' Nishad was filmed telling residents when people raised concern over the floods. Sanjay Nishad is also the founder-president of the Nishad Party, an alliance partner of the BJP government in the state. He made the remark on Monday. The video has since gone viral, sparking criticism over the perceived insensitivity of the comment, especially in a region where people have lost homes, livestock and crops to the floodwaters. Locals, however, were quick to point out that Bhognipur is situated near the Yamuna river, not the Ganga. 'At the very least, a minister should know which river is flowing here,' one villager was heard saying. In another clip from the same visit, BJP district president Renuka Sachan, who accompanied the minister, purportedly told an elderly woman that it was her 'good fortune' that 'Yamuna maiya' came to give her darshan. The woman sharply replied, 'Then why don't you stay here and enjoy it every day?' Her reply too was widely shared on social media platforms. Reacting to Nishad's remark, UP Congress president Ajay Rai said, 'Mother Ganga is respected by all, including Hindus and Muslims. This statement has just made fun of the people's faith.' Much of central and eastern Uttar Pradesh has been affected by a flood-like situation due to the rising level of major rivers, including the Ganga and the Yamuna. In Bhognipur, many villages remain submerged, farmlands have been inundated and livestock swept away. Several residents have taken shelter on higher ground or temporary relief camps. In response, the state government has activated its emergency response strategy and formed 'Team 11' of ministers, assigning specific responsibilities to them. Ministers and legislators have also been asked to monitor relief efforts on the ground. Nishad's remarks have drawn sharp criticism from the Opposition parties. Samajwadi Party youth wing national president Dr Imran said: 'This government's ministers and officers have become completely insensitive. While people are suffering immensely, such careless remarks are being made instead of providing real help.' Congress Mahanagar president Sandeep Shukla said the comments were 'like rubbing salt into the wounds.' 'People are waiting for relief that hasn't reached them, and instead the minister is giving sermons. Rather than holding those responsible accountable, he is offering mythology in place of action,' Shukla said. Nishad later told a news agency that the remark was made in a lighter vein. 'I was on a visit to a flood-hit area of Nishads where while interacting with them I said that for seeking salvation, people from far away places come to take the holy dip in Ganga and here Ganga 'maiya' was right at their doorstep,' the minister said. 'We Nishads worship rivers, our source of life and livelihoods. So the remark has its own context,' the minister said. Earlier, videos of an Uttar Pradesh police sub-inspector worshipping the Ganga waters at his doorstep in Prayagraj and swimming in the flood waters had gone viral.

Brinda Karat voices concern against Chhattisgarh's approval for mining in Hasdeo region

In a letter to Union Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav, senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Brinda Karat has opposed a recent Chhattisgarh government's approval of diversion of a large forested land in the Hasdeo region of the State for mining purposes. In her letter, the former MP and Special Invitee, CPI(M) Central Committee, wrote there was no public interest involved in the project and it would only lead to exploitation of mineral resources for private gain. A recommendation letter dated June 26, in which the Forest department has approved the proposal for diversion of forest land for non-forestry purpose — coal excavation work in the Kete Extension Coal Block Open Mine Project of the Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam or RNUVL, surfaced online on August 4. In the letter uploaded on government's PARIVESH website, Forest department official from Surguja district Abhishek Jogawat has based the recommendation on a survey done by him. The approval has also faced criticism from the Opposition Congress and environmentalists in the State. Demanding its cancellation, they have accused the ruling BJP of sacrificing the interests of the people of State as well as ecological concerns for the benefit of their capitalist friends, specifically the Adani conglomerate that is the mine developer and operator for RVUNL. Echoing similar concerns, Ms. Karat in her August 6 letter sought Mr. Yadav's intervention to 'reverse the destructive decision of the Chhattisgarh Forest department to give the green signal for the operationalisation of the Kente Extension Coal Project which requires the destruction of 1,742 hectares of dense forest land.' The approval follows the so-called inspection of the site by the Surguja District Forest Officer in June this year, she added. Ms. Karat further wrote that these projects were being taken up ignoring the opinions of the gram sabhas involved and the provisions of the Constitution and legal frameworks that made consent of the gram sabhas mandatory. 'Open cast mining affects a very large geographical area beyond the actual project. So even though human habitation in this specific area is negligible, many villages outside the area will be deeply affected. Earlier, more than 1,500 written objections from local communities were given to the government. But these have been ignored,' she wrote.
