Dubai to devise AI tools that understand Arabic

Gulf Today22-04-2025

Dubai Media Academy, the specialised training and research arm of Dubai Media Incorporated, on Tuesday announced the launch of its 'Artificial Intelligence Initiative in Arab Media.'
Unveiled during Dubai AI Week, held from April 21-25 under the patronage of Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence of the UAE, this Initiative seeks to build an integrated ecosystem of specialised AI tools and solutions that effectively support Arabic language content across Arab media platforms.
This initiative is a direct response to a series of recommendations put forth by the academy following workshops and sessions held throughout the past year.
These discussions highlighted the scarcity of AI tools capable of effectively handling the complexities and cultural depth of the Arabic language, respecting diverse dialects and cultural nuances.
Through collaborative partnerships with media outlets, technology firms, developers, universities, and research institutions, the Initiative will drive innovations to tackle challenges such as dialect representation, visual content authenticity, and limited availability of reliable Arabic training data.
Muna Busamra, Director of Dubai Media Academy, commented on the launch saying: 'The 'Artificial Intelligence Initiative in Arab Media' represents a tangible response to the real needs expressed by stakeholders in the Arab media sector.
"Through the dialogues conducted by the academy, we recognised the significant need for AI tools capable of understanding the Arabic language and considering the cultural diversity of Arab societies."
She added, "Based on Dubai Media Academy's role as a leading research and knowledge institution, we are leveraging our expertise and specialised studies to serve the efforts aimed at developing technological solutions that support Arab media and its ability to preserve the identity and cultural specificity of our Arab societies, while enhancing its presence on the global stage."
To support this launch, Dubai Media Academy also released the first edition of the white paper, "Status of Artificial Intelligence in Arab Media," which serves as a strategic roadmap outlining priorities for researchers and technology developers.
The document identifies technical requirements, offers clear guidelines, and highlights opportunities to produce original AI-driven solutions specifically designed for the Arab media landscape.
Adviser to Dubai Media Academy Asem Galal further noted, 'What distinguishes the 'Artificial Intelligence Initiative in Arab Media' is the collective enthusiasm of all active parties in the media and technology fields, and their constructive efforts to shape the future of Arab media and support it with intelligent tools capable of understanding our culture."
He pointed out that the initiative represents a qualitative leap towards shaping the future of a nation through artificial intelligence.
Throughout Dubai AI Week, the Academy will conduct targeted workshops and discussions, with further strategic projects and partnerships that will be announced successively throughout the year.

US to investigate army vehicle displaying word ‘kafir' in northeast Syria

The US-led coalition in Syria has launched a formal investigation after 'unapproved symbols or language' were observed on a US military vehicle in northeast Syria, the coalition said in a statement to Middle East Eye on Friday. On Thursday, MEE reported that a US military vehicle patrolling near the city of Hasakah last weekend displayed the word "kafir" - infidel in Arabic - on its front next to a Christian cross. The term "kafir" gained global notoriety during the Syrian war, frequently used by the Islamic State (IS) and other extremist groups to justify violence against those deemed non-believers - including Muslims who did not share their ideology. Local residents described the graffiti as "offensive" and a 'provocation', particularly as IS no longer has a presence in the region. "Markings of this nature violate U.S. Department of Defense policy," the Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR) said in a written statement. New MEE newsletter: Jerusalem Dispatch Sign up to get the latest insights and analysis on Israel-Palestine, alongside Turkey Unpacked and other MEE newsletters "CJTF-OIR has initiated a formal inquiry and will implement appropriate disciplinary measures under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. "This incident does not reflect the professionalism of our personnel or our respect for the Syrian people. While fact-finding is underway, our mission remains unchanged, enabling the enduring defeat of ISIS in Syria and Iraq." The CJTF-OIR began operations in October 2014 as the US-led coalition to defeat IS in Syria and Iraq. Earlier this week, the US special envoy to Syria announced that the United States would reduce its military presence in the country, scaling down from eight bases to three in Hasakah. Speaking to MEE, Jihan, a 34-year-old Kurdish woman, said it was hard to discern the intended message behind the markings. 'We have nothing to do with IS, we don't consider Americans to be kuffar [plural of kafir], and even less so the Christians who have always lived in Syria," she said. There are currently an estimated 2,000 American troops in Syria, with the number expected to be halved in the coming months.

Lebanon: Israeli jets bombard Beirut suburb on eve of Eid al-Adha

Israeli air strikes rocked the southern suburbs of Lebanon's capital on Thursday night, on the eve of the Eid al-Adha holiday, marking the latest major violation of the November ceasefire agreement. Lebanese news agency Ani said Beirut was hit by about 10 strikes, two of which were "very violent" and saw thousands fleeing their homes. The Israeli army said it had struck the southern suburbs targeting forces belonging to Hezbollah's "air unit". About an hour before the strikes began, Avichay Adraee, the Arabic-speaking spokesman for the Israeli army, told residents to evacuate a radius of at least 300 meters around four buildings located in the Al-Hadath, Haret Hreik, and Bourj el-Barajneh neighbourhoods. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun denounced the attacks as a "flagrant violation" of the ceasefire that ended a year of conflict last year. New MEE newsletter: Jerusalem Dispatch Sign up to get the latest insights and analysis on Israel-Palestine, alongside Turkey Unpacked and other MEE newsletters Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said on Friday there would "be no calm in Beirut, nor order or stability in Lebanon without security for the State of Israel. "The agreements must be respected, and if you don't do what is necessary, we will continue to act, and with great force," he said. Hezbollah and Israel were engaged in cross-boundary skirmishes for nearly a year after the latter began its war on Gaza in October 2023. Can the US push Lebanon to normalise with Israel? More than 3,900 Lebanese people were killed, including the Hezbollah's long-time leader Hassan Nasrallah. Following the establishment of a ceasefire on 27 November, Israel occupied five strategic points in the south of Lebanon. It has also carried out repeated air strikes in the south. According to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data project (ACLED), an American NGO which tracks violence, Israel carried out at least 330 aerial attacks between 27 November and 10 January 2025. The Lebanese army said on Friday that it had begun to coordinate with the committee responsible for supervising the ceasefire - of which Paris and Washington are members - "in order to prevent aggression". But Israel "insisted on violating this agreement and refusing to cooperate with the committee," it said. "[This] only weakens the role of the committee and that of the army," it added
