'I will die happy now Newcastle have won a trophy'
Paul Atkinson, from Blyth, Northumberland, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in May 2022 and given between two and five years to live.
A lifelong Newcastle fan, his one hope was to live long enough to see his team triumph at Wembley.
"I thought when we lost there against Manchester United two years ago that was it, but we did it this time and I still feel like I'm dreaming," he said following Sunday's Carabao Cup victory.
Mr Atkinson was born in 1955, the last year Newcastle won a major trophy, and has been a season ticket holder for much of his life.
"I first started going in 1966 after England won the World Cup, I was a Byker lad so me and my cousin Kenneth would walk down.
"I've been to Wembley three times and we lost every time, the last time was against Arsenal and I swore to myself I would never go through that again."
When Newcastle reached the final of the Carabao Cup again after the disappointment of losing in 2023, Mr Atkinson was "sure they'd do it".
"I don't know why but I just thought it was our moment, and there were a few nervous moments at the end there but we got there and I'm just over the moon.
"Who knows perhaps I'll still be alive to see a new stadium."
Mr Atkinson, who worked for the charity Stella Maris as a chaplain looking after seafarers, is urging men over 50 to get checked out for prostate cancer, the most common cancer in men.
"I was waking up to go to the bathroom more often but I just didn't realise that was one of the symptoms," he said.
"People of my generation, and my father's generation, didn't talk about things like that."

Several USMNT players are yet to enter the competition, including Chris Richards (Crystal Palace), Tyler Adams (Bournemouth), and Antonee Robinson (Fulham). WHAT NEXT? The second weekend of the Championship arrives on Friday, with matches being played through Sunday, while the second round of the Carabao Cup begins in late August. When PSG named its squad for the match earlier on Tuesday, goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, who recently joined from Lille for just over 40 million euros ($46 million), was included along with backup goalies Matvei Safonov and Renato Marin. Chevalier's arrival was expected to signal Donnarumma's departure, with the 26-year-old Italy international unlikely to accept being No. 2 if coach Luis Enrique decided so. Donnarumma then posted a message in Italian, English and French on his Instagram account saying he had effectively been forced out. "Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the team's success," he wrote. "I am disappointed and disheartened." He bade farewell to fans ahead of the new season. "I hope to have the opportunity to look the fans at the Parc des Princes in the eyes one more time and say goodbye as it should be done," Donnarumma said. "I will always carry with me the memory of all the emotions, the magical nights and of you, who made me feel at home." ADVERTISEMENT Donnarumma did not name the person who no longer wants him in the squad, but in a pre-match news conference PSG coach Luis Enrique explained why he had signed Chevalier. "These are always difficult decisions to make, I know. I can only say good things about Gigio (Gianluigi). He's one of the best players in his position, without a doubt, and he's even better as a person," Luis Enrique said. "We were looking for a different type of goalkeeper. And I repeat, it's always difficult to make a decision like that." It is thought that Chevalier's superior passing from the back— which has been a noticeable shortcoming for Donnarumma — was a crucial factor in the decision. However, Donnarumma was arguably the best goalkeeper in Europe last season, playing a key role in PSG's Champions League success with inspired shot-stopping in the knockout stages. He also starred for Italy when it won the European Championship in 2021. But with one year left on his contract, Donnarumma had refused to sign a new contract and PSG was unlikely to let him leave for free at the end of the season. He has been strongly linked with a move to Premier League big-spender Manchester City, with Manchester United also reportedly interested. PSG experienced the same situation two seasons ago with Kylian Mbappe, who ended up joining Real Madrid on a free transfer after refusing to take up the option of a one-year contract extension. Donnarumma was in a similar position to Chevalier when he joined the club after helping Italy win the Euros. He replaced Keylor Navas as No. 1, even though Navas had been outstanding for PSG the previous season. Donnarumma's arrival at PSG was seen by fans as hugely unfair on Navas and a clumsy move by the club. Now the situation has come full circle for the Italy keeper, who finds himself in much the same position as Navas was. Auburn receives votes in first AP Poll of season
The Auburn Tigers may enter the 2025 season with higher expectations in-house, but the voters around the country, at least for the time being, don't see Hugh Freeze's squad as a top 25 contender. Auburn was unranked in the first AP Poll of the college football season, marking the fifth straight year the Tigers have failed to crack the top 25. Auburn was listed among the programs that received votes, but their 10 nods were well behind the likes of BYU (156), Utah (144), and opening opponent Baylor (132) in the race to receive a ranking. The Tigers were one of 24 teams to receive at least one vote in the initial poll. Hugh Freeze's team was also one of only two SEC programs (Missouri, 33) to receive votes without earning a spot in the top 25. 10 other programs in the conference were awarded a spot in the top 25, with Texas (1) leading the way in front of Georgia (5), Alabama (8), LSU (9), South Carolina (13), Florida (15), Oklahoma (18), Texas A&M (19), Ole Miss (21), and Tennessee (24). The 10 ranked SEC programs led the way among all conferences, with the BIG 10 (6) coming in a distant second. While Auburn surely is disappointed with their lack of a ranking in either the AP or Coaches Poll, the Tigers could find themselves in the top 25 with an opening night win on the road against Baylor followed by a pair of victories against Ball State and South Alabama at home.
