Forgotten England striker sends Thomas Tuchel selection headache after becoming Champions League winner
IVAN TONEY handed Thomas Tuchel a new selection headache by adding 'Champions League winner' to his CV.
England striker Toney helped Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Ahli defeat Kawasaki Frontale 2-0 to lift Asia's elite club trophy.

Tuchel picked Tottenham 's Dominic Solanke ahead of Toney for his first Three Lions squad two months ago.
This was Toney's first major trophy win — and was Al-Ahli's debut Champions League final success after near misses in 1986 and 2012.
Toney, 29, left Brentford in a £40million switch last summer having played three games for Gareth Southgate at Euro 2024.
And he was not the only ex-Prem star to pick up medals as Al-Ahli triumphed in Jeddah.
Former Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez and ex- Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino had both won Uefa's Champions League with their former clubs.
Whil Edouard Mendy helped Chelsea prevail in the competition four years ago.
Firmino set up both goals, teeing up fellow Brazilian Galeno for a 35th-minute opener and crossing for Franck Kessie seven minutes later.
Toney — who has bagged 26 goals in 39 Al-Ahli appearances — might have netted early on but was denied by keeper Louis Yamaguchi.

Firmino, who left Anfield in 2023, said: 'This title win shows we have a monster mentality.
"We believed we could be champions and we've done it.'

Viktor Gyokeres had looked to have ruled out a move to Manchester United after their Champions League failure - putting Arsenal in pole position - but the Sporting Lisbon star may have had a change of heart Victor Gyokeres looks to have changed his tune and is now open to a move to Manchester United - despite them not having Champions League football - which was believed to have been a determining factor. The Swede has long been expected to leave Sporting Lisbon and Arsenal had been seen as his most likely destination if he did head to the Premier League. No formal talks have been held between those in Manchester and Sporting bosses, but the Red Devils' pursuit of a new striker is well documented. The Portuguese side want around £60million for Gyökeres - which is a £25m reduction on his £85m release clause. Gyokeres has a verbal agreement in place with Sporting allowing him to leave for less after he chose to stay in Lisbon last summer. Arsenal, like United, are in the market for a new frontman after opting against signing a new No 9 for several windows. Mirror Football understands that Arsenal are prioritising Benjamin Sesko, though. Arsenal's sporting director Andrea Berta has been negotiating with representatives of both players and their respective clubs simultaneously as the Gunners seek the best deal. However, the decision among the club's hierarchy is to push forward with their swoop for the RB Leipzig forward, rather than Gyokeres. That would leave the Swede, who scored more than 50 times in all competitions, looking for a new buyer. Several of Europe's top clubs are not looking to add a striker which means, even for a player of his quality, options may be limited. Amorim was the man who signed Gyokeres after he impressed in the Championship with Coventry City, later helping him become one of Europe's most prolific strikers. The United boss has just missed out on Liam Delap, who chose to join Chelsea, leaving him to review other options. Matheus Cunha has already been signed for £62.5m. The 27-year-old has just helped Sporting claim the domestic double and has remained tight-lipped on his future. He said: 'Let us see. It's hard for me to say, because yeah it is football and you never know what's going to happen in the summer. So for me to say anything else than that is impossible.' Gyokeres was asked specifically about the possibility of joining Arsenal and added: 'I don't know, I just focus on this. I've tried to focus on the last games because it's so important and I don't want to think about anything else. So yeah, if anything is true, let's see in the summer.'

Mikel Arteta adds Aston Villa star to Arsenal's new four-man transfer shortlist
Morgan Rogers starred for Aston Villa as they reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League, attracting the attention of Arsenal who are set for a busy summer transfer window Morgan Rogers has emerged as a target for Arsenal following a stunning season with Aston Villa. The midfielder fired in 14 goals and registered 15 assists in all competitions, including scoring a hat-trick against Celtic in the Champions League. His peformances for Villa earned him a place in the England squad, making his debut in the defeat to Greece last November, as well as a nomination for the Premier League's Young Player of the Year award. His displays in the Midlands have caught the eye of Gunners boss Mikel Arteta. After a third successive runners-up finish in the Premier League, Arteta is desperate to finally take his side over the line and win their first title since 2004. A striker has long been assumed to be the top target, with Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko both heavily linked with a move to the Emirates. Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi is also closing in on joining the Gunners. Despite the Spaniard arriving in a £51million deal, it appears Arteta is keen to further boost his midfield options. Jorginho has already departed on a free transfer, while negotiations with Thomas Partey over a new deal are ongoing. Even while those talks continue, Arteta is bidding to strengthen in that area of the pitch. According to The Times, Rogers has been added to a shortlist of four players Arsenal will look to target. Arteta is keen to bring in a left winger, a forward, a centre-back and a midfielder in addition to Zubimendi this summer. Rogers' versatility makes him an attractive player to the Gunners boss. The 22-year-old has featured in attacking midfield, at striker and out wide for Villa. But it would take a bumper offer to prise him away from Villa, with his contract having another five years to run. Feyenoord's Igor Paixão is also on the list and would be a cheaper alternative to Rogers. Bayern Munich 's Leroy Sané and Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams complete Arteta's shortlist. The Gunners are said to have held talks with the representatives of Williams and Sané. The latter is out of contract at Bayern Munich though would likely demand an expensive wage package. Williams meanwhile has a £42million release clause, but is expected to demand a salary of more than £250,000 a week. Rogers has previously made it clear he is happy with life at Villa, having won the club's Young Player of the Year award. 'Never a moment's rest,' he said in March as he hailed boss Unai Emery. 'When you probably least expect it is where he'll catch you out, telling you about yourself. For me personally, I wouldn't change it. "It's what you need sometimes, when you've had a few good games, sometimes you might not be as at it, that 1 per cent. He will make sure that 1 per cent is nipped in the bud straight away. He always drags the best out of you."

Liverpool need to avoid Wirtz-case scenario and buck German trend
Florian Wirtz looks set to be the marquee signing of the Premier League summer but if Liverpool's intended attacking recruit is to live up to his immense potential and lofty fee he is going to be bucking a trend. Because while German football has produced multiple World Cup titles and Champions League-winning clubs and a host of elite players in every era of the game, the record of Germans in England's top flight is a sketchy one. It began with a splash with Spurs' bold signing of Jurgen Klinsmann in 1994 and continues with Liverpool's showstopping pursuit of Wirtz but the impact of German players on the Premier League barely registers on the stats sheet with, perhaps fittingly, the most successful and enduring success stories on English soil known more for their solid and dependable qualities. If you scan down the list of all-time Premier League goalscorers you'll find our first German at 155th, alongside Robbie Earle and Ayoze Perez on 45 – one shy of Jay Rodriguez. That the player in question is Ilkay Gundogan speaks more to the Manchester City man's longevity than his attacking prowess. Gundogan, incidentally, is fourth on the all-time list for appearances by a German, behind only the prosaic talents of former Stoke and Leicester defender Robert Huth, Champions League winner Dietmar Hamann and unsung Brighton midfielder Pascal Gross. Former Arsenal schemer Mesut Ozil, with 54, has the most assists of any German but is 39th on the all-time list. By contrast there are two Spaniards (David Silva and Cesc Fabregas), a Belgian (Kevin De Bruyne) and a Dutchman (Dennis Bergkamp) in the top ten, while Argentina, Egypt and France all feature in the equivalent list of top scorers. In all, 135 players have managed 50 Premier League goals and none of them are German. Liverpool will expect Wirtz to change that and trouble Ozil's assists mark to get a good return on their investment. Jurgen Klinsmann was one of the biggest names in the game when he rocked up at Spurs, perhaps the first overseas glamour signing of the new competition. He was 30 but, with 20 goals in 41 games, the 1990 World Cup winner showed he was still in his prime and lived up to the hype. Klinsmann left after a year, only to return in his mid-30s, nine goals in 15 games helping to save Spurs from relegation and pushing his overall tally to 29 – still good for tied-fifth with Uwe Rosler (another hugely successful 1990s import) on the all-time list of German goalscorers. Wirtz is not the first wunderkind to head to England. Michael Ballack was 29 when he swapped Bayern Munich for Chelsea in 2006. The commanding midfielder had played in World Cup and Champions League finals but, despite a league title and three FA Cups there was always a suspicion Ballack left his best stuff in Bavaria. Leroy Sane was only 20 when Manchester City paid Schalke £46m for his speedy wing play in 2016 but he was back in the Bundesliga by 2020, his potential never quite fully realised. The same could not be said of Mesut Ozil, a bona-fide galactico and soon-to-be World Cup winner when Arsenal teased him away from Real Madrid in 2013. A fan favourite who more than lived up to the hype, the mercurial playmaker's eight-year stay was a game of two halves, the brilliance of the early years partly overshadowed by the diminished returns and exile of his final seasons. A decade after Ballack left and seven years after signing Andre Schurrle – who won the World Cup and Premier League as a Chelsea player but never really took off – the Blues opted for two more expensive German punts. Timo Werner, 24 at the time, cost almost £50m from RB Leipzig but returned to his former club for half the price after ten goals in 56 league games. Last season, still only 29, he could not get a game on loan at Tottenham. Later in 2020 Chelsea paid Bayer Leverkusen upwards of £60m for a 21-year-old Kai Havertz who repaid their faith with a winning goal in the Champions League final and produced a small profit when sold to Arsenal three years later. A popular and key figure at the Emirates, Havertz has nevertheless failed to top his highest tally of 17 Bundesliga goals in a season in his five years in England and remains a positional enigma. While German footballers have made a significant contribution to the Premier League, there is enough evidence to suggest the brightest young signings often struggle to fulfil their potential. More Trending Whereas Spain, France, Belgium, Brazil, the Netherlands, Argentina and Portugal have produced some of the finest players to have graced these shores, Germany ranks alongside Italy as a footballing superpower that has yet to fully crack the competition. Former Germany boss Joachim Low said this week he was surprised Wirtz, who scored his seventh goal for Germany against Portugal in midweek, has chosen Liverpool for the next step in his career and warns it will be a real test. But has no doubt the 22-year-old will be a hit. 'Liverpool is a real statement because moving to the Premier League involves a lot of adaptation and that starts with the rhythm of the game,' Low told Bild. 'Nevertheless, I have no concerns that Wirtz will prevail – no matter where he would have gone. He plays with a naturalness that can't be coached. He possesses all the skills a footballer needs to be a world-class player.' Over to you, Florian.
