Downsizing of DEOs in taluk, dist hosps hits online services

Time of India19-05-2025
Mysuru: The downsizing of data entry operators (DEOs) in taluk and district-level hospitals by the health and family welfare department has severely affected online services over the last two weeks in Chamarajanagar district.
The health department appointed five DECs in taluk govt hospitals and ten in district hospitals under the
e-hospital initiative
of the
National Health Mission
scheme to facilitate the registration of patients, clearing discharge summary bills, and online payments. Thirteen DEOs were relieved from duty with effect from May 1, leading to disruption in inpatient registration.
Under the e-hospital initiative, the department appointed five DEOs in Gundlupet, Yelandur, and Kollegal, ten in the District Hospital, and one data entry operator in the District Leprosy Eradication Unit hospital.
However, in its recent order, the state health and family welfare department downsized its DEO staff to one for each taluk hospital, five in district hospitals from ten DEOs, and cancelled DEOs for the District Leprosy Eradication Unit.
The govt directed all these hospital managements to maintain online services with the existing one DEO and five DEOs in the district hospital on B Rachaiah Road. As the govt downsized DEOs, patients were queuing up, and heavy rush was witnessed, leading to disruptions in health services and the discharge of patients in taluk and district state-run hospitals.

"As most of the patients who are availing treatment at govt-run hospitals are poor and from rural areas, they have to line up and wait long hours to receive registration certification, make payment for lab services, and clear discharge summary bills. This also causes delays in seeking transfers to other hospitals, obtaining death certificates, birth certificates, and several other services. By downsizing its staff, the state health department must restore DEO services to ensure the smooth functioning of taluk and district hospitals," demanded Mahadeva, Chamarajanagar District Soliga Tribal Welfare Association vice-president.
Chamarajanagar district health officer Dr Chidambara S said that district health authorities downsized DEO staff in all taluk and district hospitals following an order from its higher-ups. However, the district health authorities continued to maintain online services with existing DEOs working at its hospitals without causing much disturbance to patients, he said.

PM Narendra Modi inaugurates advanced cancer treatment facilities in UP's Varanasi; robotic surgery, radiation machines & CT scanner installed under CSR

VARANASI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated two state-of-the-art linear accelerators (radiation machines), a Mantra robotic surgery unit, and a CT scan machine on Saturday for patients at the Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Cancer Centre (MPMMCC) and Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital (HBCH). The addition of these new machines is expected to significantly improve the speed, accuracy, and quality of treatment. The hospital received these medical devices recently under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. Dr Satyajit Pradhan, Director of MPMMCC and HBCH, said the advanced medical devices, provided through CSR at a total cost of Rs 73.30 crore, will elevate the treatment capacity of both hospitals to new heights. This move is expected to not only enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of cancer treatment but also act as a lifeline for underprivileged patients fighting for life with limited resources. The initiative aims to strengthen regional healthcare and set an inspiring example for cancer care in India. "We are grateful to all the donors who stood with us in this battle against cancer; this would not have been possible without their support," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Dubai villas | search ads Get Deals Undo Radiation therapy remains a crucial part of cancer treatment, with most patients requiring it at some stage. Currently, the hospital has four radiation machines, which were insufficient to meet the demand, leading to treatment delays. To address this issue, two new linear accelerators have now been installed. The Uttar Pradesh government funded one machine with ₹31.63 crore, while Power Grid Corporation of India Limited contributed Rs 26.42 crore under CSR for the other. The operation of these machines is expected to reduce waiting times and improve the quality of life for cancer patients, significantly enhancing the hospital's cancer management capabilities. The Mahamana Cancer Centre has also become the first hospital in Purvanchal to offer robotic surgery for cancer treatment. With support from the ICICI Foundation, the unit was established with ₹10 crore. This technology enables complex surgeries to be carried out with greater precision, shorter operating time, and minimal risk. The Mantra Robotic Unit, developed under the "Make in India" initiative, will be especially effective in treating cancers of the urinary system, head and neck, and abdomen. Patients are expected to recover more quickly and spend less time in hospital, easing pressure on the healthcare system. Timely and accurate diagnosis is key to successful cancer treatment. To support this, a new 128-slice CT scan machine has also been installed, funded by Kotak Mahindra Bank under CSR with ₹5.25 crore. This addition is set to speed up the diagnostic process and reduce the waiting list significantly. It will particularly benefit patients from economically weaker sections who cannot afford costly private diagnostic services. Should you keep eggs in the fridge? How improper storage could raise your risk of Salmonella

With summer temperatures soaring across much of the US, many people are double-checking how they store their groceries, especially foods like eggs that seem deceptively simple but are surprisingly sensitive. While your grandmother may have kept eggs on the counter, today's eggs sold in American supermarkets are washed, sanitized, and require refrigeration to stay fresh and safe. So, what's the right way to store eggs in the US? by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Join new Free to Play WWII MMO War Thunder War Thunder Play Now Food safety researchers say the fridge is your best friend, especially if you want to avoid spoilage, extend shelf life, and protect your health in peak summer heat. According to Professor Marina Elisabeth Aspholm, a food safety expert at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), the safest and most effective way to extend the life of your eggs, no matter the season, is to keep them in the refrigerator. Live Events "It is always wise to store eggs in the fridge as it extends their shelf life," Science Norway quoted Aspholm, specializes in food safety and veterinary microbiology. Why refrigeration matters more in the summer Eggs are naturally porous. This means water and gases slowly pass through their shells, a process that accelerates in warm conditions. Storing eggs in the refrigerator slows down this natural evaporation process and inhibits the growth of bacteria, especially during the heat of summer. 'Eggs stay fresh and safe much longer in the fridge,' says Aspholm. 'Often even several weeks past the 'best before' date.' What about Salmonella? Why refrigeration matters more in the US Salmonella is a key reason eggs are always found in the refrigerated section at the grocery store in the United States. Unlike in some European countries, like Norway, where hens are vaccinated and egg production is tightly regulated, the US has a higher risk of salmonella contamination. That's why all commercial eggs in the US are washed and sanitized before sale, but this also removes their natural protective coating, making them more vulnerable to bacteria and requiring constant refrigeration. To stay safe, the CDC recommends storing eggs in the fridge at 40°F (4°C) or below and cooking them thoroughly. If possible, pasteurized eggs should be used in dishes with raw or lightly cooked eggs, like homemade mayo or sunny-side-up eggs, especially for children, older adults, or those with compromised immune systems. Are backyard or farm eggs safe? If you're buying eggs from local farms, private backyard hens, or international markets, the level of oversight is often lower. These eggs can carry a higher risk of contamination, especially when hens are outdoors and exposed to wild birds or animals. 'Eggs from hens that roam freely or come from countries with less food safety control should be heat-treated before eating,' Aspholm advises. Can you freeze eggs? Yes, but with a caveat. You'll need to remove the shell first. While freezing doesn't eliminate bacteria, it can still be a viable long-term storage method. However, frozen eggs lose some of their functional properties, such as their ability to whip into fluffy foam. So, should you refrigerate eggs? Absolutely. Especially in summer. Whether you're in Norway or elsewhere, keeping eggs in the refrigerator significantly extends their shelf life and reduces bacterial growth. Even if your local store sells them at room temperature, pop them in the fridge as soon as you get home.

Cardamom: A natural spice that may help lower blood pressure

Cardamom, known for its sweet and aromatic flavour, is more than just a cooking spice. Recent studies suggest that cardamom may be helpful for people with mild (grade-one) high blood pressure. It's gaining attention as a natural supplement for heart health due to its ability to lower blood pressure, reduce inflammation, and support blood vessel health. Made from the seeds of the Elettaria cardamomum plant, this spice is used in Indian, Middle Eastern, and Scandinavian cuisines. Now, it's also being studied for its potential health benefits, especially for people with early signs of hypertension. Benefits of cardamom for blood pressure and heart health 1. Helps reduce blood pressure naturally Clinical research shows that cardamom may help lower both systolic (top number) and diastolic (bottom number) blood pressure. In one study, people with grade-one hypertension who took 3 grams of cardamom powder daily for 12 weeks saw their blood pressure drop to normal levels by the end of the study. This result suggests that cardamom could be a helpful natural remedy for mild high blood pressure, especially when combined with a healthy lifestyle. 2. Supports blood vessel function and circulation Cardamom contains natural compounds that help relax blood vessels and improve circulation. It may work in a similar way to calcium channel blockers, a type of medication used to treat high blood pressure. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If A Cat Bites Their Owner Heres What It Really Means Gloriousa Undo It also helps stimulate nitric oxide production, which improves how blood flows through the arteries and reduces pressure on the heart. 3. Acts as a natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory High blood pressure is often linked to inflammation and oxidative stress in the body. Cardamom is rich in antioxidants that protect cells from damage and support healthy blood vessels. Studies also show that cardamom may reduce markers of inflammation like CRP, IL-6, and TNF-alpha, which are often high in people with heart disease or metabolic problems. 4. May work as a mild diuretic Cardamom has been shown to have a diuretic effect, which means it may help the body get rid of extra salt and water. This can help lower blood pressure by reducing the amount of fluid the heart has to pump. How to use cardamom for lowering blood pressure Effective dose: Clinical studies used about 3 grams per day of cardamom powder, divided into two or three doses. This is roughly ½ to 1 teaspoon daily. Best forms: Freshly ground cardamom powder Whole pods chewed or steeped in tea Cardamom capsules (from trusted herbal supplement brands) Ways to add it to your diet: Stir cardamom powder into chai tea, golden milk, or smoothies Add to curries, rice dishes, or desserts Mix into oatmeal or yogurt for a warm, spiced flavour Chew a few pods after meals as a natural breath freshener Precautions and other things to know Generally safe when used in food amounts or moderate doses (3 g/day) Consult a doctor if you take blood pressure medications or blood thinners Choose high-quality sources – organic cardamom or tested supplements Not a replacement for prescribed medication, but a supportive natural option Other health benefits of cardamom Improves digestion and may reduce bloating Freshens breath naturally Fights inflammation in the body May lower cholesterol and support heart health May improve insulin sensitivity in people with blood sugar issues Cardamom's mix of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds make it a powerful heart-healthy spice with benefits beyond blood pressure.
