‘The Last of Us Part II' Can Now Rob You of Its Most Brutal Moment
Tuesday, Naughty Dog announced that it's releasing a new update to the remastered edition of The Last of Us Part II. The update will allow fans to play the game chronologically, which drastically shifts the timing and intentions of the original game. 'Those who have already played will know its story is told non-linearly, as Ellie and Abby's motivations, realizations, and emotional stakes unfold across myriad flashbacks and present-day storylines,' the announcement reads. 'While this structure is very intentional and core to how our studio wanted Part II's themes and narrative beats to impact players, we always wondered what it would be like to experience this story chronologically. And now finally, we can answer that question.'
But did the question need to be answered? And is the fact it's being answered so soon after the TV show based on the game was met with criticism for following the game a coincidence? It sure doesn't seem like it. It, in fact, feels like a way to potentially undercut the intentions of the game, which we admit were pointedly unpleasant, but in a very good way.
For those who may not know the context here, The Last of Us Part II (and the TV adaptation so far) starts with a woman named Abby killing Joel, one of the main characters in the first game. In the game, you then play primarily as Ellie, Joel's almost daughter, who goes on to hunt Abby. But, once the two finally meet again, the game flips back in time, and you're forced to play as Abby. It's an uncomfortable moment to become the villain, but as the game moves along, that conflict becomes the point. We start to see Abby as less of a villain and more of a hero.
It's what The Last of Us Part II is all about. Making the player question themselves and others. Forcing us to deal with our own empathy. It's also what the TV show is going for too, albeit in a slightly more drawn-out way since we'll have to wait two years for new episodes. A chronological version of the story might still have that in there, but it won't land in such a direct, gut-punch way.
'Through the new Chronological mode, we believe players will gain even deeper insight into Part II's narrative,' the company says. 'Players will be able to see how Ellie being gifted a guitar flows so neatly into her learning to play, for example, while the journey through Seattle will showcase the fascinating parallels between Ellie and Abby's crisscrossing journeys. You'll see just how close they come into running into each other, how their actions impact each other, and more.'
Which, honestly, as a fan of the game, sounds kind of fun. It's just a different point of view on the story. Maybe the answer here is to only make this mode available after you beat the game the original way, something that doesn't seem to be in place but is recommended. 'While we of course recommend players still new to the game to play through Part II's story as was originally developed, the team's hard work has paid off with a fascinating new way to enjoy this chapter,' Naughty Dog says.
Do you think this new mode is in any way an answer to issues with the TV show? Does it bother you it exists? Or are you excited to actually give it a shot and see what new things you can learn? Let us know below.

Epic ‘Glitter Retriever' Has Mom Questioning Everything
Epic 'Glitter Retriever' Has Mom Questioning Everything originally appeared on Parade Pets. Dogs will get into literally anything if you let them. They have no reason to be doing all of that, but they do. It's so annoying, but it's hard to be too mad at the. They're just dogs, after all. They don't know better! Recently, there was one incident that definitely warranted being a little angry. When one Golden Retriever turned into a "glitter retriever" on mom's white bedding, her mom could hardly believe her eyes. She's very sparkly and beautiful, but this would totally send me over the edge: I hope Lexis Howard was able to take a step back and take a deep breath after this. There is no glitter allowed in my house for this very reason. Wishing her the best trying to get all of this out of her bed! This girl's name is Ellie, and this was certainly not her first offense. She loves to be as bad as possible whenever she can, and she always has. She's about a year and a half old: she was a birthday gift for their 9-year-old daughter. Since getting her, there certainly hasn't been a dull moment! Wait until Lexis realizes they haven't even gotten to the terrible twos yet... Ellie is a classic Golden Retriever puppy. She loves getting into trouble. Her favorite moves are grabbing something she doesn't need to have to try and play chase with it, digging in the yard, and eating everything in sight. Bonus point if she eats it on mom's white bedding! She particularly loves to victimize the couch cushions: Some people might think that Golden Retrievers are just the perfect dog. They can do no wrong. They're just perfect little angels... Right? Wrong. Incorrect in every possible way. Golden Retrievers are the sweetest little troublemakers you'll ever meet. They love to nip and get into things they shouldn't, and they're incredibly stubborn. These dogs will throw tantrums to get what they want, just like every other dog! Ellie is no exception. In fact, she might just be the brattiest Golden of all! 🐶🐾🐾 Epic 'Glitter Retriever' Has Mom Questioning Everything first appeared on Parade Pets on Jul 27, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade Pets on Jul 27, 2025, where it first appeared. One of Nintendo's most creative Super Nintendo games is now on the Switch
Last night, Nintendo quietly added Mario Paint to the Nintendo Switch Online's catalog of Super Nintendo games. Originally released back in 1992, Mario Paint was a unique SNES title, because although it included a handful of mini games, it was first and foremost a creative tool letting players draw, paint, animate, and even compose music using the 16-bit console. What also set Mario Paint apart from other SNES games was that it didn't rely on the console's standard gamepad. It came bundled with a two-button mouse and a plastic mouse pad that made drawing and navigating the game's on-screen menus and drag-and-drop interface much easier. In 1992, creative apps like Photoshop were still in their relative infancy —- Photoshop didn't even have its useful layers feature yet — and for many kids, Mario Paint was their first exposure to using a digital creative tool (and perhaps even a mouse). Alongside Mario Paint being added to the Switch's SNES catalog, Nintendo has enabled mouse support for the Switch's SNES app, which is compatible with games like Mario's Super Picross and Nobunaga's Ambition. On the original Switch, players can connect a compatible USB mouse to play Mario Paint, while on the Switch 2 the Joy-Con 2 controller's mouse functionality can be used. The company also recently added 19 tracks from Mario Paint to the Nintendo Music mobile app, including the three sample compositions available in the game's music sequencer. Sydney Sweeney Is Facing A Backlash Over Her New American Eagle Campaign. Here's What People Are Saying
Sydney Sweeney's new collaboration with the fashion brand American Eagle has become the centre of a whole lot of debate. The Euphoria star unveiled a new campaign with the American clothing brand last week, to promote their line of denim last week. However, it didn't take long before social media clips to promote the deal sparked a wave of discomfort among many critics, largely due to some of the language that's used in the campaign. This is the story so far… What is Sydney Sweeney's new ad campaign for American Eagle all about? For American Eagle's autumn 2025 campaign, Sydney Sweeney can be seen sporting items from the brand's denim range, including a new pair of jeans inspired by her. The campaign also makes use of the slogan 'Sydney Sweeney has great jeans', a pun on the term 'great genes'. In another, she explains: 'Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair colour, personality and even eye colour.' 'My jeans are blue,' she then quips, at which point a narrator delivers the line: 'Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.' Why are some people upset about Sydney Sweeney's new ads for American Eagle? Unfortunately this repeated use of the slogan 'great jeans', a pun on 'great genes', has put some viewers in mind of the language used by white supremacists and eugenicists. By centring a blonde, white star in a campaign referencing 'genes', some critics are accusing the brand of tone-deafness at best – particularly in the current political climate – and deliberately pushing a white supremacist agenda at worst. HuffPost UK has contacted representatives for both Sydney Sweeney and American Eagle for comment. Others are pointing out that Sydney Sweeney's American Eagle campaign doesn't mention one other important aspect of the product American Eagle's new 'Sydney Jean' features a butterfly detail on its back pocket, in a nod to domestic violence awareness, a cause which the White Lotus star has championed throughout her career. In fact, an American Eagle press release confirmed that '100% of the purchase price from 'The Sydney Jean' will be donated to Crisis Text Line', a charity in the US which aims to help those affected by domestic violence. However, the ads are also being criticised for not highlighting this key part of the campaign, with some saying its accompanying slogan is even more jarring as a result. Has Sydney Sweeney or American Eagle said anything about the controversy?
