Viewers overjoyed as Netflix renews new show for another season despite VERY negative reviews from critics

Daily Mail6 hours ago

Netflix has officially renewed the romantic western drama Ransom Canyon for a second season.
The soapy series became a surprise hit for the streamer when it premiered in April, debuting at No. 2 on the weekly Netflix charts.
It continued to surge in the following weeks and eventually topped Variety's most-streamed TV list with over 2.6 billion minutes watched.
To put its popularity into perspective, the second most-streamed show, Paramount's Mobland, logged 530 million minutes watched.
Viewers have been overjoyed by the news of a season two, with many flocking to social media to share their excitement.
'Let's rock and roll baby!' gushed one fan, while another wrote, 'This is what dreams are made of!'
A third commented, 'The only good news on the internet today.'
'Season two better have 25 episodes!!!!! I love Lucas and Lauren so much,' wrote another.
However, not everybody was impressed with the series, which has suffered from mixed critical reviews despite its success on streaming.
'Josh Duhamel is just not a good actor... Minka Kelly honestly was the only bright spot in the whole show for me,' commented one.
'Ransom Canyon is Heartland, Virgin River and Hallmark. Terrible writing, terrible!' wrote another.
Reviewers seemed to dislike season one more than viewers, with headlines calling it 'a try-hard Western' that is a 'far cry from Yellowstone,' and 'goes down easy but leaves a weird aftertaste.'
Ransom Canyon stars Josh Duhamel, Minka Kelly, James Brolin, Eoin Macken, Lizzy Greene, Andrew Liner, Marianly Tejada, Garrett Wareing and Jack Schumacher.
USA Today gave the series one and a half stars out of four as it said, 'Peek underneath the jean jackets and cowboy hats and you'll find there's very little substance to Canyon.'
AV Club said, 'The show's ten episodes are engineered for maximum escapism and bingeability.'
Both Duhamel and Kelly have compared their western soap to food.
The Win a Date with Tad Hamilton star, called it 'comfort food,' while the Friday Night Lights actress called it 'gooey chocolate cake.'
And while many reviews compared Ransom Canyon to Yellowstone and its spin-offs, that wasn't quite on the mark.
Netflix was looking to capitalize on the success they've had with romantic dramas Virgin and Sweet Magnolias, this time with some western flair.
The series is adapted from the series of books by Jodi Thomas and created by Wednesday writer April Blair. Set in the fictional town of Ransom Canyon, Variety called it 'horny, absurd, and ridiculously entertaining' and 'a sexy, predictable, breezy viewing experience that delivers on its promises.'

Home and Away star Lynne McGranger and daughter Clancy look the mirror image of each other in loved up photos

Lynne McGranger's daughter Clancy McWaters is the spitting image of her. The Home and Away star, 72, who shares the 29-year-old with partner Paul McWaters, frequently shares photos of the yoga instructor to her Instagram. And followers are often left stunned by the similarities between them as the mother-daughter duo share the same sharp features, warm smile and bright blue eyes. Clancy is also drawn to the arts and loves expressing her creative side, as Lynne has previously said her daughter enjoys singing, dancing and acting. 'She is a triple threat, she sings, dances and acts, at the moment she seems to be leaning toward more singing and dancing,' Lynne told Sydney Confidential in 2015. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'We were surprised when Clancy announced at the age of 15 or 16 that she wanted to study drama. But we are very happy for her and support all the way.' Clancy, who currently teaches yoga in Sydney, has even found her way onto the set of Home and Away as an extra on occasion. According to Clancy's LinkedIn, she's also appeared on a number of other classic Australian shows as an extra, including Packed To The Rafters. The blonde has also starred in a number of commercials for KFC, McDonald's, Cancer Council and Tourism Australia. Lynne made the announcement of Clancy's engagement to boyfriend Luke Dickson via Instagram in October 2022. 'So happy for our beautiful daughter and her amazing fiancé on their engagement. We love you both so much,' Lynne captioned her post. Lynne has played Irene Roberts on Home and Away since 1993, after taking over the role from actress Jacquy Phillips. Irene Roberts was initially written as a recurring character but was promoted to regular cast shortly after Lynne joined. The veteran actress is one of the longest-serving stars on the Australian soap. Now, after three decades in the role, Lynne is leaving the iconic Aussie show behind. Her final scenes were filmed in March. Sources recently claimed Lynne will use her long-awaited retirement from the series to finally tie the knot with her long-term partner Paul. The couple have been together for more than 40 years. A close friend of the soap star told New Idea a walk down the aisle could be on the cards now Lynne isn't tied down by filming commitments for Home and Away. 'Lynne used to joke that she and Paul would tie the knot when their daughter Clancy go married. She thought the idea of a double wedding was hilarious,' they said. 'But Clancy got married in August 2023 and her parents stubbornly kept their de facto status.' 'All that could change now Lynne has more time on her hands. Watch this space.' While Lynne has kept her relationship out of the public eye, she revealed to New Idea back in 2014, how love blossomed between the couple. 'I invited him round to my place in 1984 [after having dinner together] and he never went home. Still hasn't,' she said at the time. Lynne added while she was still waiting for Paul to propose, she was in no rush to tie the knot. 'We always joke and say we'll do it when we want some white goods, and I'm here to tell you now, we need a new washing machine,' she joked.

Ironheart review – the small screen can barely contain the energy of this Black Panther spinoff

Amid the usual welter of pre-emptive criticisms, hopes, dreams, doubts and hostilities that suffuse the internet whenever a new addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe – or any other alternative world beloved of a fandom – is announced, Ironheart (the 14th TV series in the MCU and following on from the events in 2022's film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) has at last arrived. In the film, Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne, reprising the role on the small screen, which can barely contain her charisma or energy) was the genius MIT student who invented the vibranium detector that rather kicked off the whole vibranium power struggle, then the metal exoskeletal suit that aided the Wakandans in their face-off with Talokan. At the end, she returned to MIT and that is where we find her at the beginning of Ironheart, on a Tony Stark fellowship, and trying to wangle an extra year of grant money to refine the suit that could potentially transform emergency services provision. 'Help would never be too late!' Unfortunately, she has provided herself with interim funding by completing assignments for stupider students and is duly kicked out. She returns to her mother's apartment in Chicago with nothing but a battered prototype flying suit to show for her efforts, plus recurring flashbacks to the night five years ago when she lost her beloved stepfather Gary and her best and only friend Natalie in a shootout at the former's garage. What's a traumatised genius inventor to do? Well, first she scans her own brain to upgrade her suit's AI and this results in, effectively, the murdered Natalie (Lyric Ross) coming back to life and being able to accompany bestie on her new swathe of adventures. These adventures come courtesy of a gang of misfits who have assembled above a pizza parlour nearby and are bent on sticking it to The Man via one telegenic heist and/or caper per episode, accruing money and power as they go – with all of their plans facilitated by having someone in an impregnable, weaponised suit accompanying them. The group is led by the formerly petty and now much more ambitious criminal Parker 'The Hood' Robbins (Anthony Ramos), owner of a mysterious cloak (with a hood, obvs) that enables him to become invisible – and who is also the sporter of a large tattoo that attempts to disguise a torso that is covered in scales. Is he the Big Bad or is he just the instrument of a Bigger Bad, possibly linked to the unearthly sumptuary powers hanging round him? I guess we will have to wait and see. Riri signs up to help the gang with three jobs to earn money to pay for improvements to her suit. Shopping for bionic and/or black market parts brings her into contact with Joe McGillicuddy (Alden Ehrenreich), an over-nice guy who lets people walk all over him until Riri starts giving him bracing life advice. His bunkerful of illegal tech and weaponry makes him feel closer to his father, an engineer, and Joe intends to use it not for bellicose purposes but for the betterment of humanity. Older, more jaded people might buy this story from a man with a bunkerful of illegal tech and weaponry slightly less readily than Riri does, but she is young and perhaps by episode three or so she will learn. We all, in fact, must work quite hard to stay up to speed. Ironheart is a fast and furious business. Like Ms Marvel, it is clearly aimed at the younger end of the fan spectrum and the pace is relentless, as if the makers are desperate not to give the audience a second to look away. In keeping with the YA vibe, there is much weight given to loyalty and friendship rather than romance or sex (though there is a spark between Riri and Natalie's sweet brother Xavier, played by Matthew Elam); no swearing, and plenty of flashy effects and cartoonish violence involving a lot of people being thrown against a lot of walls. There is also a very repetitive emphasis on The Choices We Make and how they Define the People We Become – how long you can hang out with criminals without becoming one, how often you can do the wrong thing for the right reasons without it corrupting you, at what point ignorance becomes wilful, and so on. To say it becomes preachy would be putting things too strongly. But 'slightly tiresome' would not. At least until it's time again to throw someone at a wall. And for that you rarely have to wait too long. Ironheart is on Disney+
