The Forest Department has brought kumki Chinnathambi from Kozhikamuthi elephant camp of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR) to Vellingiri Andavar temple at Poondi in Coimbatore district to guard people from wild elephants that often enter the temple premises.
The department has already stationed another kumki Narasimhan, also from Kozhikamuthi camp, at Poondi for about a week. Chinnathambi was brought on Wednesday night as an additional layer of security, anticipating heavy inflow of people for Chithra Pournami.
According to the department, a large number of people are expected to visit the temple at Poondi in the downhill and trek Vellingiri hills for Chithra Pournami. As the temple is situated in the midst of reserve forest areas of the Boluvampatti forest range, movement of wild elephants could be expected anytime.
Narasimhan was brought to Poondi last week for the safety of devotees, following recurring incidents of a tusker entering the temple premises in search of food.
'Chinnathambi was brought to Poondi as an additional safety measure. Presence of kumkis will deter wild elephants from approaching the area. The kumkis can also be used to drive out wild elephants, if any, enter the temple compound,' said Boluvampatti forest range officer T. Suseendranath.

MP CM to address an event on ‘Tiger Day' tomorrow

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav will inaugurate the state-level programme on the occasion of International Tiger Day at Kushabhau Thakre Convention Centre in Bhopal on July 29. He will visit the exhibition showcasing activities related to wildlife conservation and felicitate forest personnel for their outstanding work in the field of wildlife conservation. Yadav will inaugurate vehicles related to wildlife translocation, rescue operations, and dog squads on this occasion. According to the 2022 tiger census, India had an estimated 3,682 tigers, with Madhya Pradesh alone accounting for 785, the highest in the country, which is why it retained the tag of 'Tiger State'. Besides, having won the title of "Tiger State," Madhya Pradesh has achieved the top rank in the effective management of national parks and protected areas. For instance, Satpura Tiger Reserve (STR) has been included in UNESCO's tentative list of World Heritage Sites. According to the central government's evaluation report on tiger reserve management effectiveness, Pench Tiger Reserve ranked the highest nationwide. Bandhavgarh, Kanha, Sanjay and Satpura Reserves were also rated as the best-managed reserves. These parks are known for their unique management plans and innovative conservation methods. "The state's tiger corridors are well-connected to both northern and southern Indian tiger reserves. National parks have played a crucial role in tiger conservation through effective management and strategic relocation of villages from forest areas, freeing vast regions from biological pressure," said the Forest Department. Due to rich wildlife, Madhya Pradesh has emerged as a major attraction in wildlife tourism. The number of both domestic and international tourists visiting the tiger reserves has been consistently increasing. According to a report by the Wildlife Institute of India, Kanha Tiger Reserve has been declared the best tiger habitat in the country. The reserve boasts the highest population of herbivores in India, including chital, sambar, gaur, wild boar, barking deer, nilgai, and hog deer - providing an abundant food source for tigers.

Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini KALESAR (YAMUNANAGAR): Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini reaffirmed the state's strong commitment to environmental preservation, declaring that Van Mahotsav is a symbol of our gratitude toward nature, our responsibilities as citizens, and our resolve to ensure a healthier future for the coming generations. Speaking as the chief guest at the state-level Van Mahotsav organized by the Forest Department at Kalesar, the chief minister emphasized that while rapid modernization is transforming our lives, we must not forget our roots in nature. 'When we plant a tree, we are sowing the seeds of life and hope,' he said. Before attending the event, the chief minister offered prayers at the historic Kaleshwar Mahadev Temple, praying for peace and prosperity in the state. He also inaugurated a newly built Forest Department rest house and participated in a tree plantation drive at the event site. Massive plantation targets across Haryana Chief minister Saini shared that Haryana has set an ambitious target of planting 2.10 crore saplings this year. Developing Kalesar and Kalka as a tourism hub Highlighting the ecological and touristic importance of the Kalesar region, the CM announced that the government is working to develop the entire stretch from Kalka to Kalesar into a tourism hub. He praised Kalesar not just for its natural beauty, but also as a hotspot for trekking and nature tourism. Protection of forests and wildlife To protect forests and wildlife, the government has intensified its actions against illegal tree felling and poaching. The Forest Department has been instructed to act more proactively, especially in wildlife-rich areas like Kalesar National Park, where strict surveillance and patrols have significantly reduced illegal hunting. As a result, elephant herds were sighted thrice last year in the area, including at Bansantor, where they've been successfully rehabilitated. The state has also developed dams in the Shivalik region to conserve water and ensure drinking water for wild animals, which also contributes to replenishing groundwater levels. Honouring trees with 'Pran Vayu Devta' scheme Taking a unique step toward green conservation, the state has launched the 'Pran Vayu Devta Pension Scheme' to support trees older than 75 years. Under the scheme, ₹3,000 annual pension per tree is provided for their care. So far, ₹1 crore has been disbursed to protectors of 3,800 such trees. Since October 2014, the state has already planted over 18 crore saplings, and their growth is being tracked using drone-based geo-tagging and mapping over a 5-year period to monitor forest expansion. Promoting environmental awareness On this occasion, the chief minister also released two important publications: 'Haryana Forest News' and 'Pran Vayu Devta', aimed at spreading awareness about forest conservation, the importance of tree species, and efforts being undertaken by the Forest Department. Speaking at the event, environment and forest minister Rao Narbir Singh emphasized the long-term impact of the 'One Tree in Mother's Name' campaign. MLA Ghanshyam Dass Arora also encouraged citizens to care for the saplings for at least a year to ensure their survival and environmental benefit. The CM was warmly welcomed at the event by additional chief secretary Anand Mohan Sharan and other dignitaries. Among those present were Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Vineet Kumar Garg, former Cabinet Minister Kanwar Pal, CM's OSD Bharat Bhushan Bharti, DC Parth Gupta, SP Kamaldeep Goyal, BJP leaders, former MLAs, and local representatives. The Van Mahotsav served as a powerful reminder that sustainable development must walk hand-in-hand with nature, and Haryana is setting an example for the rest of the nation to follow.

Rains lead to closure of tourist spots in Nilgiris; Avalanche dam sluice gates opened

Despite rains easing off across the Nilgiris, many tourist spots operated by the Forest Department, including Doddabetta Peak, Pine Forest and the Eighth Mile Tree Park were closed to the public for the fourth consecutive day on Sunday (July 27, 2025). The Avalanche dam had also almost reached almost full-capacity, leading officials from TANGEDCO to decide on releasing water through the dam's sluice gates. The Forest Department announced the tourist spots were closed owing to concerns over public safety due to heavy winds. The Nilgiris district administration stated an average of 50.46 mm of rain were recorded across the district between Saturday evening and Sunday morning (July 26 and 27, 2025), with intense rains in Naduvattam, Parsons Valley, Porthimund, Avalanche, Upper Bhavani and moderate to heavy rain in parts of Gudalur and Pandalur. Nilgiris Collector helps unearth hidden milestone in Nilgiris' history The heavy rains had led to trees becoming uprooted along the Udhagamandalam to Gudalur Road, while boulders had also become dislodged and blocked the route to Melkowhatty. The National and State Highways Departments both mobilised men to immediately clear the blockages to traffic and traffic flow was restored soon afterwards. Power outages were also reported across many places in Udhagamandalam, Gudalur and Manjoor towns owing to the rains accompanied by heavy winds. Nilgiris district a hotspot for negative human-gaur interactions in Tamil Nadu: study On Sunday (July 27, 2025), the Nilgiris district administration urged residents in Emerald, Nehru Nagar and other areas downstream of the Avalanche dam to not venture close to rivers and streams fed by the dam waters. The sluice gates of the dam were opened on Sunday morning at around 9.30 a.m. Last weekend, the Pykara Dam had also reached full capacity and its sluice gates were opened. The TANGEDCO officials stated that they continued to monitor the capacities of other dams in the district, including Upper Bhavani to ensure the dam's safety.
