NBA: Boston Celtics Extend Joe Mazzulla's Contract After Historic Championship Run
Boston Celtics president Brad Stevens has made it clear all offseason that the franchise wanted Joe Mazzulla as head coach for the long haul. On Friday, that commitment became official as the Celtics announced Mazzulla had signed an undisclosed multi-year contract extension.
In a statement, the 37-year-old coach expressed gratitude for the support he has received throughout his career.
'I would not be here without my faith, my wife, and my children," Mazzulla said. 'We are thankful for the partnership with our ownership groups, Brad's mentorship, and the support of our staff. Most importantly, I am grateful for the players I have been able to coach the past three seasons. I look forward to competing for the Celtics and the city of Boston."
Mazzulla has enjoyed a remarkable start to his head coaching career, guiding the Celtics to the NBA Playoffs in each of his first three seasons and capturing the franchise's record 18th championship in 2023–24. That title run made him the youngest head coach to win the NBA Finals since 1969, when 35-year-old Bill Russell led Boston to glory as a player-coach.
Under Mazzulla's leadership, the Celtics have won at least 57 games each year and surpassed the 60-win mark in back-to-back seasons — a level of consistency rarely seen in today's NBA.
Mazzulla joined Boston's coaching staff in 2019 as an assistant. His rise to the top job came under unusual circumstances — he was named interim head coach before the 2022–23 season following the suspension of then-head coach Ime Udoka. In February 2023, the interim tag was lifted, and Mazzulla signed his first extension.
Stevens later revealed the coach had received at least one more extension before this latest deal.
