Gifts from Modi carry Ayodhya's spiritual legacy and folk artistry abroad

Time of India07-07-2025
NEW DELHI: Picking up from where he left off during his last visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented his hosts with gifts that reflect India's deep cultural and spiritual roots, along with its handcrafted excellence.
From a 'silver replica of the Ayodhya Ram Temple' to a 'Kalash' (a sanctified vessel) containing sacred water from the River Sarayu, and from a 'silver lion mounted on a Fuchsite stone' to a 'Madhubani painting of the Sun,' Modi's gifts to the leaders of Trinidad and Tobago and Argentina this week went beyond diplomatic protocol to showcase India's rich heritage.
The replica of the Ram Temple, handcrafted by artisans from Uttar Pradesh, was presented to Trinidad and Tobago's Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar as a tribute to India's sacred architecture and the enduring legacy of Lord Ram.
The finely detailed miniature, cast entirely in pure silver, symbolises dharma, devotion, and the intricate craftsmanship that defines temple art in India.
Accompanying it was the Kalash filled with sacred water from the Sarayu, which flows through Ayodhya. In Hindu tradition, the Sarayu's waters are believed to absolve sins and bring peace and prosperity. The metal Kalash itself, often associated with abundance and sanctity, underscores India's age-old practice of invoking divine blessings through sacred rivers and ritual vessels.

Argentine President Javier Milei received a hand-etched silver lion mounted on a Fuchsite stone base – a universal emblem of courage and leadership. Crafted by Rajasthani silversmiths known for their attention to detail, the piece is anchored on Fuchsite, often called the 'stone of healing and resilience,' which adds natural elegance while reflecting India's geological wealth and artisanal mastery.
In Argentina, India's gifts also highlighted vibrant folk traditions and gemstone artistry. Vice President Victoria Eugenia Villarruel was presented with a Madhubani painting of the Sun, a vivid composition from Bihar's Mithila region. Traditionally painted on walls and floors during festivals, Madhubani art is renowned for its bold lines, natural colours, and intricate patterns that fill every inch of the canvas.
The Sun, in this context, represents life, energy, and prosperity, making the gift both decorative and deeply symbolic.

CM and oppn spar over low use of tribal welfare funds, vacant ST posts

Porvorim: The assembly on Tuesday saw a heated debate between chief minister Pramod Sawant and opposition MLAs over the alleged underutilisation of funds earmarked for tribal welfare in the state and the delay in filling up posts reserved for STs. The opposition MLAs also said the state failed to meet its promise of providing political reservation of seats in the assembly to tribals by 2025. While the CM said that 82% of funds meant for tribal welfare were utilised in Goa, the highest for any state, the opposition disputed this. 'The tribal sub-plan has not crossed 5.2% when it should be 10.2%. The roster for reserved posts in govt offices is manipulated,' said Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai. 'The state has not yet notified the tribal scheduled areas or taken any steps in this direction to this day.' He said, 'The file for the promotion of an ST police inspector to DySP is pending vigilance clearance.' Sawant said the notification of tribal scheduled areas is pending due to some technical issues and the matter will be resolved soon. St Andre MLA Viresh Borkar said that 852 vacancies for STs are yet to be filled in the PWD, general administration, and commercial taxes. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo 'Some departments don't even know tribal welfare funds exist and Rs 69 crore meant for tribal welfare are pending utilisation,' he said. 'We have recently provided training by the finance department to departments like PWD, the DDW, and the WRD to utilise funds for tribal welfare,' said Sawant. The CM said the ST reserved posts' backlog is mostly in new posts besides promotions backlog. 'We will clear all promotion posts' backlog within six months,' he said. 'Tribal reservation was introduced twice in Parliament and a ruckus by the opposition led to it not being passed. If anyone opposed the tribal bill, it is the opposition and Congress,' said Sawant. Opposition leader Yuri Alemao, said, 'Why did they not pass it without opposition as you have done in the assembly earlier?' Sawant said that he has already pressed for the demand for political reservation for STs with the central ministers and said that though the state wanted the implementation to take place in 2027, it will now be seen that it is implemented as soon as possible. Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas said that the tribal vision document of govt is a sham, with the promise of the Tribal Bhavan still pending.

Bhopal, Indore to become Metro Regions Under 25-Yr Plan

Bhopal: The House on Tuesday passed the Metro Area Bill seeking to declare Bhopal and Indore, along with adjoining districts, as metropolitan areas on the same lines as the National Capital Region (NCR). Initiating the debate, urban development minister Kailash Vijayvargiya said the Metropolitan Area Bill was part of a long-term strategy to address development challenges likely to emerge over the next 25 years. Notably, the NCR comprises Delhi and its adjoining areas of UP, Haryana and Rajasthan. Referring to PM Narendra Modi's vision to make India a developed nation by the year 2047, Vijayvargiya said the vision can't be achieved if the states also do their bit to contribute in realising this dream. Even as Vijayvargiya was speaking on planning for next 25 years to ensure sustainable development of both the urban and rural areas proposed to be brought under the metropolitan areas, Congress MLA Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat said long-term planning was alright but the minister should first bring out the Master Plan for Bhopal and Indore. Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar, however, said there was nothing wrong in thinking of the future even if the Master Plan of Bhopal and Indore had been delayed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo Vijayvargiya, while referring to challenges likely to be confronted in the next 25 years, said roads, water, transport, industrial & technological development, employment and even farming will have to be planned in advance and the Metropolitan Area Bill was only aimed in this direction. "The manner in which population is rising, there can be a food crisis in the coming year if the farming techniques are not upgraded," he said. Vijayvargiya further said the govt was beginning with Bhopal and Indore and other major cities like Gwalior and Jabalpur will be included in the metropolitan area plan in course of time. He said that a high-level committee headed by the CM will be formed to execute the plan for next 25 years to ensure sustainable development of the area. Congress MLA and former urban development minister Jaivardhan Singh, who spoke after the minister, said the NCR has been a roaring success in terms of development of the areas particularly Noida and Gurgaon, where a lot of investment both domestic and foreign has taken place but there have been very apparent failures as well particularly on the front of environment. While implementing the metro area plan in MP, the Congress leader said the state govt should keep both the aspects in mind. He further said another thing very apparent in the NCR region is the fact that every inch of the land in the region has been occupied, and this was a major reason for turning the region as one of the most polluted in the world. Singh said the metro area project in MP has immense potential if the state government pays attention to four areas -- industrial & technological advancement, steps to turn the area into education hub, easy transport and environment protection. Singh also referred to the inability of the BJP govt to finalise the Bhopal Master Plan since 2005, and said when the Congress was in power for a brief period, the Bhopal Master Plan was finalised and brought out but then the govt fell and the master plan also fell through.

The data, tabled in response to a question by BJP MLA Ashish Govind Sharma, revealed that these cases were registered under provisions of the Madhya Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, 2021, and Indore and Bhopal topped in such cases in the state. "How many cases of love jihad have come into cognisance in MP since 2020?" Sharma asked CM Mohan Yadav, who holds the home portfolio. "Out of these, in how many incidents have reports been registered in police stations? How many of these cases involved boys and girls under 18 years? How many cases are ongoing in courts?" Sharma asked in his written query. Responding to the questions, the CM stated that the Madhya Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, 2021, which came into force on Mar 27, 2021, empowers the state to act against coercive or deceitful religious conversions, particularly those targeting vulnerable women and girls. To strengthen enforcement, a state-level special investigation team was established by the police headquarters on May 4 to probe such incidents. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Prepare for the Surcharge Change [Read Now] Tyro Payments Learn More Undo In the total 283 cases reported in different police stations of the state, 197 cases are in courts.
