Nato walks on eggshells as Trump heads to Hague summit with allies bracing for fireworks

As Nato leaders meet in The Hague, all eyes are on US President Donald Trump. Will he support the alliance or disrupt it again? Leaders are hoping that a short, carefully planned summit, designed to please Trump, will help keep the talks on track. read more Nato members have been scrambling to bolster their defence capabilities since Russia launched its war against Ukraine in February 2022. Reuters As Nato leaders gather in The Hague, one big question looms: Will US President Donald Trump cooperate — or will he once again cause disruption, as he has done on several occasions? Nato leaders are hoping that a carefully choreographed summit, short in duration and filled with praise for Trump, will keep discussions on track when they begin on Wednesday. Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte sent a glowing message to Donald Trump on Tuesday, saying: 'You are flying into another big success.' The message was one of several that Trump eagerly shared online while crossing the Atlantic aboard Air Force One. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD In the message, Rutte even compared Nato's new defence spending plan to the recent US airstrikes on Iran's nuclear sites. 'Congratulations and thank you for your decisive action in Iran, that was truly extraordinary, and something no one else dared to do,' he wrote. The flattering tone highlighted just how eager Rutte and other Western leaders are to ensure the NATO summit runs smoothly. With Trump's commitment to the alliance often uncertain, they are doing everything they can to keep him focused and cooperative. Efforts to avoid a Trump outburst Every precaution has been taken to avoid a Trump outburst, including giving him credit for securing a major new defence spending agreement. However, even before landing in Europe, Trump raised tensions by refusing to clearly reaffirm his commitment to Nato's Article 5, the principle that an attack on one member is an attack on all. 'Depends on your definition,' he said, unsettling allies shortly before a dinner with them on Tuesday evening. NATO countries are expected to approve a plan to spend 3.5 per cent of GDP on defence, plus an additional 1.5 per cent on broader security-related areas like cybersecurity. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described the move as 'historic.' Trump targets Spain, flirts with Russia The increased defence spending is intended to keep Trump engaged with the alliance. He has long complained that European countries spend too little on their own defence, especially following Russia's war on Ukraine. Spain was the final country to back the new target, calling the 5 per cent goal 'unreasonable', a stance that angered Trump. He accused Spain of risking the success of the summit and pointed out that the US spends nearly $1 trillion on defence. Spain is only now reaching NATO's existing 2 per cent target after a €10 billion funding increase. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'We'll be discussing it soon,' Trump warned. Concerns over unity on Russia and Ukraine Rutte emphasised that the increased defence spending is vital to deter Russia, but Trump's unpredictable stance on Ukraine continues to cause concern. He has softened his position on Russia and previously clashed with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Zelensky left out of main summit session Ahead of the summit, Zelensky told Dutch MPs, 'Russia must see that Ukraine won't be left alone.' Trump and Zelensky are expected to meet privately, with officials hoping to avoid a repeat of their previous tense Oval Office meeting. Zelensky has not been invited to the main summit session, which has been shortened to just two and a half hours, reportedly to suit Trump's dislike of lengthy meetings. Support for Ukraine, but no talk of membership Rutte said NATO's support for Ukraine remains firm, but the alliance will avoid any mention of Ukraine's push for membership, after Trump ruled it out. US: Zohran Mamdani poised to win New York Democratic mayoral primary polls

Zohran Mamdani was on Wednesday poised to win the Democratic Party's primary election for the New York mayoral polls in the United States, CNN reported. His main opponent, former New York state Governor Andrew Cuomo, conceded the contest even as the counting of votes was underway. Mamdani's votes in the primary were below the 50% mark, CNN projected. This would mean that the contest will be decided by ranked-choice votes that will be announced beginning July 1. Mamdani, who is of Indian origin, campaigned for a rent freeze, making New York's buses free, energy reforms and increasing taxes on the city's wealthiest persons. The 33-year-old has been a supporter of the Palestinian cause and has called for Israel to be held to account over its war on Gaza. Since 2021, he has served as a member of the New York State Assembly for the 36th district in Queens. He is also a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. If elected in the election scheduled for November 4, Mamdani will become the first Muslim and the first person of South Asian origin to become the mayor of New York. He is the son of Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair and Mahmood Mamdani, a Ugandan academic and professor of African, colonialism and post‐colonialism studies. Mamdani's opponent Cuomo was attempting a political comeback. In 2021, he had resigned amid allegations of sexual harassment and New York state's mishandling of the Covid-19 pandemic. He had denied the allegations. 'Tonight was not our night; tonight was Assemblyman Mamdani's night,' CNN quoted Cuomo as having told his supporters on Tuesday as the votes were being counted. However, his Spokesperson Rich Azzopardi was quoted as saying that Cuomo may consider the mayoral polls in November on another party's ticket. Mamdani will face the city's current Mayor Eric Adams, who is contesting as an Independent. The Republican Party has nominated Curtis Sliwa.

Iran executes three people accused of spying for Israeli spy agency Mossad

Iran executed three men accused of spying for the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad, the state's news agency reported Wednesday. This is the latest in a series of executions carried out in recent months by Iran. (REUTERS) The three were convicted of working with Mossad, and for smuggling equipment which was used in an assassination, according to the judiciary's Mizan news agency. This is the latest in a series of executions carried out in recent months by the country. This comes a day after United States President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, with both countries seeming to agree to the understanding. Iran had also executed Mohammadamin Shayesteh – a political prisoner who was handed the death sentence for 'insulting Islamic sanctities' and 'collaborating with the enemy' – under the same charges on Monday (June 23). Shayesteh was detained in late 2023, according to Iran's Tasnim news agency, after he was accused of being the 'head of a cyber-team affiliated with Mossad'. After he was tortured, Shayesteh admitted to working with Israel, following which he was convicted for multiple offences, including Article 6 of the Iranian law on Countering Israeli Actions Against Peace and Security, according to Iran Human Rights. 300 executed for spying in two months Iran has executed 300 people accused of spying the past couple of months, according to Iran Human Rights. This includes Majid Mosayebi, who was accused of providing 'sensitive information' to Mossad and executed on Sunday (June 22). Mosayebi's sentence was handed by the Iranian Supreme Court after he went through the full process of criminal procedure, according to AFP news agency. Iran's heightened crackdown and arrests pertaining to people spying for foreign intelligence agencies, especially Israeli spy agency Mossad, comes in the wake of Israel's June 13 attacks on the country. Both the Israel and US had attacked nuclear sites in Iran, with the latter retaliating with strikes. The police in Iran's Qom province took 22 individuals, who were allegedly 'linked to" Israeli spy services, into custody, according to a report by the Fars news agency. In 2024, Iran had executed more than 900 people, according to the human right
