‘Noticed cases of love jihad': Now Goa CM wants a law against ‘forced' conversions
Responding to a calling attention motion on the first day of the Goa Legislative Assembly's Monsoon Session, Sawant said, 'Forced conversions are not allowed under the anti-conversion law in Uttar Pradesh. Several states have passed such laws. I feel we too need a law so that forced conversions do not take place. There was denial about 'love jihad'. We have noticed cases of 'love-jihad' in the state. Pointing to the recent arrest of one S B Krishna, alias Ayesha, from Goa by Uttar Pradesh Police in an alleged illegal conversion racket, BJP MLA Premendra Shet and AAP MLA Cruz Silva had moved a calling attention motion, claiming an 'international network' had been operating in Goa 'funded by international operators'. They questioned the steps taken by the government to neutralise the 'transnational network'.
Uttar Pradesh Police on Saturday claimed to have busted a network allegedly indulging in illegal religious conversions with the arrest of 10 people from six states in connection with its probe into the abduction of two sisters from Agra in March this year. Police said the accused would allegedly lure young women, particularly minors, across states through deceitful means for religious conversion and were receiving funds from Canada and other countries to run their operations. As per UP police, preliminary investigations suggest the group's link with organisations like PFI, SDPI and some extremist groups in Pakistan.
Calling on the Congress to support the government, Sawant said, 'Recently, some targeted cases are occurring. You may say they are adults…they are in love, but when there are (specific) cases of targeting, then we will have to pay attention.'
Vijai Sardesai, Goa Forward Party (GFP) president, intervened, stating that the 'narrative' of 'love jihad' had been imported from the national discourse and was irrelevant to Goa's ground reality. 'If there are forced conversions, show us the data. Where is the report? Do not confuse Goans with borrowed narratives. This is about crime, not religion,' Sardesai said.
Independent MLA Aleixo Lourenco, also interjected, asking the Chief Minister to clarify. 'There are no conversions happening in Goa, especially from the Catholic side,' he said.
Sawant responded by saying, 'Goa's harmony has never been disturbed and it should never be. I made it clear that this is against those who are attempting to do forced conversions. Inter-religious marriages are happening in Goa. That is their willingness…their wish. But forced conversions…by giving money…should not happen.'
AAP MLA Cruz Silva demanded a thorough investigation into the case, urging the law enforcement agencies to investigate how many such accused are residing in the state. 'Goa is an international tourist destination. Tourists from across the country and abroad visit Goa. Recently, a grand Exposition of Saint Francis Xavier was held in Old Goa, attended by lakhs of people. However, during the same period, (this accused)…was also staying in Old Goa and was allegedly linked to ISIS. Now that the Uttar Pradesh police have arrested her, everything has come to light. But how is it that the Goa Police and the Crime Branch had no information about her?' Silva asked.

Delhi CM tables FY24 finance report in assembly; shows 55 pc drop in revenue surplus
New Delhi, Aug 4 (PTI) The revenue surplus of the Delhi government under AAP rule in 2023-24 declined by 55 per cent as compared to the preceding fiscal, said a CAG report tabled in the Monsoon session of the assembly by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday. Gupta tabled the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports on 'Finance Accounts and Appropriation Accounts of the Delhi for the year 2023-24. The report pointed that although the revenue receipts of the government dropped, the gross state domestic product (GSDP) at current prices grew at an average pace of 8.79 per cent during the last five years from ₹ 7.93 lakh crore in 2019-20 to ₹ 11.08 lakh crore in 2023-24. There was 9.17 per cent growth in GSDP in 2023-24 from the previous year 2022-23. Also, the budget outlay of Delhi increased at an average growth rate of 7.14 per cent from ₹ 64,180.68 crore in 2019-20 to ₹ 81,918.23 crore in 2023-24, said the report. It further said the revenue surplus of Delhi government in 2023-24 decreased from ₹ 14,457 crore to ₹ 6,462 crore, registering a fall of 55.30 per cent over 2022-23. The fiscal deficit, however, went down from ₹ 4,566 crore in 2022-23 to ₹ 3,934 crore in 2023-24, it said. The report of the CAG on the finances of the Delhi government for the year 2023-24, provided an overview of its finances, budgetary management and quality of accounts, financial reporting practices. The report noted a receipt-expenditure mismatch indicating rising fiscal stress. The report further showed that the Delhi government's revenue expenditure between 2019-20 and 2023-24 increased from ₹ 39,637 crore (5 per cent of GSDP) to ₹ 50,336 crore (4.54 per cent of GSDP). It consistently made up a significant portion ranging from 81 per cent (2021-22) to 83 per cent (2023-24) of the total expenditure during this period, growing at an average annual rate of 6.51 per cent, added the report.

Prayagraj: Floods displace many, but policeman welcomes Ganga with rituals at his doorstep
In an act that may seem like a mockery of the plight of thousands of people displaced by floods in Prayagraj, a video shows a sub-inspector of the Uttar Pradesh Police performing a ritualistic welcome to 'Maa Ganga' (Mother Ganga) as the floodwaters reach the doorstep of his home here. He is seen barefoot while performing the rituals. The sub-inspector can be further heard thanking the river for gracing his house after having blessed over 66 crore devotees during the 45-day Mahakumbh 2025, which was held earlier this year on the banks of the Sangam in Prayagraj. After the rituals, another video shows the sub-inspector diving into the floodwaters from the balcony of the first floor of his two-storey house, expressing his joy. The sub-inspector belongs to the Other Backward Classes Nishad community, comprising fishermen. His videos have sparked mixed reactions online with some calling it an act of reverence and others criticising it as a publicity stunt amid a natural calamity. Pappu Lal Nishad, president of Prayagraj Navik Sangh (an organisation of boatmen, said, 'Every member of the Nishad community has a special connection with Maa Ganga as the river not only sustains our livelihood but also protects us from all dangers. There is nothing wrong in what sub-inspector Chandradeep Nishad did. It is an act of showing reverence.' 'The same reverence is visible at the Bade Hanuman temple (in Prayagraj). When Ganga water enters the temple premises every year, it is not a flood for devotees, but instead considered as Maa Gange having come to bathe Lord Hanuman,' he added. A senior police official on condition of anonymity said the sub-inspector had worshipped the 'holy Ganga' which was not a crime. 'He did not do anything that would put a scar on the uniform. It was just plain puja. Belonging to the Nishad community, the connection with the river is not something unusual,' he added. The water level of the Ganga in Prayagraj's Phaphamau was recorded at 86.07 metres at 12 noon on Monday, according to the irrigation department. The Yamuna river was flowing at 86.08 metres in Naini, according to the irrigation department. The danger mark is at 84.73 metres for both the rivers.

AAP accuses BJP of framing its leaders in 'false cases' after Delhi court dismisses case against Satyendar Jain
The AAP on Sunday slammed the BJP for allegedly framing its leaders in false cases and questioned who would compensate the families for the emotional distress caused by the serious corruption allegations. In a post on X in Hindi, former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal asserted that all cases filed against his party leaders are "false".(PTI) In a major relief for AAP leader Satyendar Jain, a special court on Monday accepted the CBI's closure report filed in a 2018 case against the former Delhi PWD minister and others related to alleged corruption in hiring a creative team for the department, noting that the "investigation found no criminal activity or wrongful loss to the government." In a post on X in Hindi, former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal asserted that all cases filed against his party leaders are "false". "With time, the truth will come out in all these cases. False cases were filed against us, and we were sent to jail. Shouldn't those who filed these false cases, and those leaders who ordered these false cases, be sent to jail? We were smeared with mud day and night, our families had to endure so much pain — what about compensating for all that?" the AAP supremo said on X. While accepting the CBI's closure report, Special Judge Dig Vinay Singh said the investigating agency has not found any incriminating evidence over such a long period, and further proceedings would serve no useful purpose. "Whenever they wanted, they filed fake cases; whenever they wanted, they sent us to jail; and whenever they felt like it, they filed a 'closure report.' Is this justice?" Kejriwal questioned. Senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia also posted on X, "Three things cannot remain hidden for long: the sun, the moon, and the truth. – Gautam Buddha. No evidence found against Satyendar Jain: CBI." "The BJP put in all its might, but victory always belongs to the truth. Satyameva Jayate," Sisodia said in his post. The agency had registered the case on May 28, 2018, on a reference from the office of the Lieutenant Governor of the NCT of Delhi to investigate the allegations of irregularities in the award of a tender to a private company for hiring a creative team for PWD works. Four years later, the CBI filed a closure report in the matter, underlining that there was "no evidence of pecuniary advantage, conspiracy, or corruption". AAP's Delhi state convener Saurabh Bharadwaj said the "conspiracy" of the BJP had been exposed. "The conspiracy of BJP exposed. False cases by CBI revealed. The despicable thinking of BJP's central government and their LG - file false cases against Kejriwal's government ministers and MLAs to hinder their work, defame them in the name of corruption. Now the truth is coming to light,' he said in a post on X in Hindi. Echoing similar views, former Delhi minister Atishi said in a press conference, "Since the AAP government was formed in Delhi, the BJP has filed false cases against our leaders. In 10 years, more than 200 cases have been filed against our leaders. When these cases go to court, it comes to light that AAP leaders have done nothing wrong." Atishi said the CBI court has accepted that there was not a single penny of corruption in Jain's case and has declared him innocent.
