Farooq Abdullah Claims 'Militancy' Won't End In J&K Until India, Pakistan Mend Ties; BJP Reacts
Farooq Abdullah says militancy in J&K won't end until India-Pakistan relations improve. He questions the Centre's claims of peace. BJP blames Pakistan for terrorism.
National Conference Leader Farooq Abdullah on Monday claimed that militancy in Jammu and Kashmir would not end until the relations between India and Pakistan improve.
While speaking to reporters, the NC veteran openly challenged those who believe that militancy and terrorism have ended in the valley.
'Militancy will not end. Those who believe that militancy will end, I challenge them at this moment. Militancy will not end until our relations with our neighbours improve," he said as quoted by news agency IANS.

He further spoke about the Centre's efforts to ensure peace in the valley, saying that there is a need to find a way out of the conflict.
'I don't see the peace coming. I think we are living in a fool's paradise to think that peace will come overnight. We have a strong neighbour, whether it is China or Pakistan. Somehow, we have to find a way out. War is not a way out. Finally, you have to use a pen and discuss things. How does it hurt us?" he said as quoted by news agency ANI.
He also questioned the central government over its claims that terrorist camps have been uprooted in the region, asking how the Kulgam encounter was happening if that was the case.
'I have never said that militancy is over. Those people who were saying that Article 370 is responsible for militancy, they were in-charge here for so many years. Before the Pahalgam terror attack occurred, the central government had announced that it had uprooted terrorist camps. Even in the present war they had with the neighbour, they said that they had knocked the terrorists out, so how is Kulgam encounter happening?" Abdullah added.
He further lambasted the Centre, asking about the timeline to reinstate the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir.
BJP Reacts
The BJP reacted to the former Chief Minister's remarks, saying that this is the same person who once claimed that Article 370 can never be removed and it would be reimposed with the help of China.
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla took a dig at Abdullah, saying why do the leaders of the INDIA bloc become apologists for terrorists.
He said that the cause of terrorism is Pakistan. "
The cause of terrorism is Pakistan and the ideology on which it is based. Islamabad considers everyone in the world, and especially India, as its enemy. This thought is the root of terrorism," he added.
India-Pakistan Ties
The diplomatic ties between India and Pakistan were downgraded after Lashkar-linked terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists in Pahalgam on Tuesday, April 22, killing at least 26 people, including foreign tourists, and injuring many others. The Resistance Front (TRF), a Lashkar offshoot, claimed responsibility for the attack.
India responded with Operation Sindoor on May 7, bombing nine terrorist camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in pre-dawn strikes that killed at least 100 militants. The operation sparked four days of cross-border fighting involving fighter jets, missiles and artillery.

India would not have got Independence without Bengal: Mamata
KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said India would not have got Independence if Bengal was not there, as personalities such as Rabindranath Tagore and Subhas Chandra Bose, who contributed significantly to shaping the nation's destiny, were born here. Speaking at a function marking the 12th anniversary of the 'Kanyashree' scheme, Banerjee said Bengal is the beacon of hope that stands for unity amid diversity. "If Bengal was not there, India would not have got Independence. Bengal's soil has produced eminent people like Rabindranath Tagore, Nazrul Islam and Subhas Chandra Bose. The national anthem, the national song and the 'Jai Hind' slogan are all creations of Bengalis," she said. Banerjee's statement assumed significance as the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has been leading a campaign centred around Bengali 'asmita' (pride), alleging "language terror" on migrant workers from West Bengal in BJP-ruled states.

Late ex-President Zail Singh's grandson rejoins Congress; 2 academics inducted
Inderjeet Singh, the late former President Giani Zail Singh's grandson, returned to the Congress while the party inducted academics Ratan Lal and Ravikant into the party on Thursday. Two academics were among those inducted into the Congress. (X) Inderjeet Singh said he rejoined the Congress after quitting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as it had become 'neat and clean' after 'a few corrupt leaders from Congress moved to the BJP.' 'The BJP uses the backward classes and does nothing for them... Now, I am happy that I am home.' Ratan Lal, who teaches at Delhi University, said he joined the BJP to defend democratic institutions. 'Prime Minister Narendra Modi claims nothing significant has taken place in the last 70 years. But what happened in the first 40 years after independence is reaping benefits for you… When the constitutional bodies are being misused, votes are being stolen, and public sector units are being destroyed, it is the responsibility of every concerned individual to join the Congress and strengthen the INDIA [Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance] bloc,' he said. Ravikant, a Lucknow University professor, emphasised the centrality of the Nehru-Gandhis to the country's democratic fabric. 'Those who disregard the Nehru-Gandhi family are either naive or wicked. The Prime Minister's politics does not function without disrespecting [Jawaharlal] Nehru. When attempts are being made to end the Constitution and the voting rights, and social hatred is being spread, an individual has begun to fight for realising the dreams of Jawaharlal Nehru, Mahatma Gandhi, and BR Ambedkar.'

‘Cannot ignore Pahalgam': SC on plea to restore Jammu and Kashmir statehood
The Supreme Court, while considering a plea for restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, on Thursday said that ground realities in the Union Territory, including incidents such as the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, cannot be ignored, Live Law reported. A bench of Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran was hearing an application seeking directions to the Union government to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. The plea argued that the delay in restoring statehood was hurting the rights of citizens, Bar and Bench reported. The Bharatiya Janata Party-led Union government had abrogated Article 370, which gave special status to the erstwhile state, in August 2019. It also bifurcated the state into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. In December 2023, the Supreme Court upheld the validity of the 2019 order abrogating Article 370 and ordered the Union government to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. During the hearing on Thursday, the petitioners argued that the court, in its 2023 judgment, had relied on the Union government's assurance that statehood would be granted after the Assembly elections. The elections held in September and October 2024 were the first in Jammu and Kashmir in a decade and the first since the abrogation of Article 370. 'You can't ignore what happened in Pahalgam,' Live Law quoted the court as having told the petitioners. The terror attack at Baisaran near Pahalgam town in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22 left 26 persons dead and 16 injured. The terrorists targeted tourists after asking their names to ascertain their religion, the police said. All but three of those killed were Hindu. Meanwhile, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Union government, opposed the plea on Thursday. 'We assured statehood after elections,' Live Law quoted Mehta as saying. 'There is a peculiar position of this part of our country. I don't know why this issue is agitated now. This particular state is not the correct state to muddy the water.'
