An All-Black Boys Gymnastics Team Is Fighting To Keep Its Program Alive

Yahoo2 days ago
Ashepacks up his floor mats and gymnastics equipment, James Jones is stressed.
Since 2019, Jones has been inviting Black boys in Georgia's Clayton County to join his James Jones Gymnastics Academy, an operation he primarily runs solo.
Now, the gymnastics coach is searching for answers as the lease for his current Metro Atlanta gym expires this week. Some of the boys he currently trains have outgrown the current space, a former office within a shopping plaza.
'The ceiling is only 13 feet high. And so when we first came here, the boys were small. These boys are teenagers, and most of them are almost 6 feet,' Jones, who also works as an attorney, says as he packs up his things. 'They're literally kicking the ceiling.'
Stringent zoning restrictions are preventing him from moving elsewhere within the county, he explains.
'For a year, I've been trying my best to relocate us to another location in Clayton County because this is one of the cheaper counties for commercial real estate,' Jones, who operates the all-Black boys gymnastics club, says. 'There are so many warehouses and buildings that are vacant and empty, but we can't move to any. And at this point, I'm constructively being forced to close down because I can't relocate the gym anywhere else.'
Despite only having been in action for nearly six years, the gymnastics team has become a pillar of its community. Around 600 boys and teens have trained through his academy for free or reduced rates, he says. The Clayton County Board of Commissioners honored Jones and his gymnastics team with a proclamation during its July meeting, celebrating the team's recent victory at the Louisiana State Championships.
'We really want to keep this program going for the community,' Kecia Blackmon, whose child participates in the academy, told WSB-TV. 'It means a lot to us. It means a lot to the community. So please help us if you can.'
Jones works with low-income families, which means parents aren't able to take their children to other areas of Georgia to participate in gymnastics programs due to the cost of travel and traffic. 'If you go to the city of Sandy Springs, if you go to Cartersville, if you go to Roswell, they have fully funded gymnastics programs that are paid for by their citizens through Parks and Rec programs,' he says, mentioning cities in nearby counties.
Jones put out a call for assistance on social media. Donations started to pour in, and even celebrities like actor Viola Davis and Olympic gymnast Jordan Chiles are sharing the effort. Chiles sent a donation of $1,000 to the program.
But Jones says finances aren't necessarily the issue — though donations are appreciated due to the high costs associated with gymnastics.
'This isn't an issue about money. It is an issue about zoning. A gym supporter posted an old fundraising campaign from a competition that took place a couple of months back. And people started donating there,' Jones explains. 'That just became the new fundraiser to try to get us into a new location.'
A Clayton County spokesperson said Tuesday the properties James proposed did not meet their zoning requirements. Warehouses, which are preferable locations due to space and size, are largely in areas zoned for heavy industrial use, meaning they are designated for manufacturing or disposing of junk, for example — not sports activity.
'The County is committed to working with Coach James or any applicant to find solutions in line with the County's zoning policies,' the spokesperson said in a statement.
Since his initial post on social media, however, the gymnastics coach says he is feeling hopeful. Jones is currently in talks with local leaders and is heartened by the outpouring of support.
He is still on the hunt for a property that will accommodate his team. Jones hopes the support will encourage more parents to consider putting their young Black boys in gymnastics.
'I think that there is a huge misconception amongst parents that their sons would not like gymnastics,' he says. 'I think that a lot of parents stifle the interest of their sons because they don't even give them a chance to develop an interest in the sport.'
'If Black boys see other Black boys doing gymnastics, or boys in general, if it piques their interest, they will want to do it. They will want to join in as well.'

Falcons sign defensive back, release offensive tackle from 90-man roster

The Atlanta Falcons made another change to their 90-man roster on Saturday, signing defensive back Grayland Arnold and releasing offensive lineman Kilian Zierer in a corresponding move. Head coach Raheem Morris said the team was looking to add secondary depth, and Arnold should be able to provide it. The 27-year-old has appeared in 26 games with one start since entering the league in 2020. Arnold has mostly contributed on special teams throughout his NFL career. Prior to missing the 2024 season due to injury, he spent three seasons with the Houston Texans. Arnold played on 79 percent of the team's special teams snaps in 2022 and 60 percent in 2023. Over his four NFL seasons, the veteran defensive back has recorded 33 tackles (20 solo) and one forced fumble. Falcons rookie continues to turn heads in training camp

Despite having limited resources, the Atlanta Falcons went into the offseason committed to improving their pass rush. The team scraped together $10 million to sign veteran edge rusher Leonard Floyd in free agency before adding two of the highest-rated edge rushers in the 2025 NFL draft. The Falcons were praised by draft analysts for landing projected top-10 pick Jalon Walker with the 15th overall selection but earned mixed reviews for their decision to trade up for Tennessee edge rusher James Pearce Jr. later in the first round (pick No. 26). Thus far in training camp, Pearce has quieted those doubters. The rookie has been disruptive as a pass rusher, and has helped the defense raise its intensity in practice. Team reporter Will McFadden said Pearce continued to shine in his latest camp former Volunteers standout was McFadden's most notable player from Friday's practice: It's getting hard to keep the rookie out of this spot, because he makes it difficult to look away when he's out there on the field. Regardless of who he's up against, Pearce is giving each rep the energy it deserves and he's making a lot of plays. He had what would very likely have been a sack on game day, and he batted down yet another pass at the line of scrimmage. This is a defense that wants to attack, and Pearce, at this point in camp, is often the tip of the spear. -- Will McFadden, The Falcons have been happy to see Pearce thrive, even if it results in the occasional training camp brawl. Unfortunately, two of the team's other rookies have been dealing with minor injuries. First-round pick Jalon Walker is dealing with a hamstring injury and has been limited to individual drills in practice. Head coach Raheem Morris said it was not a long-term injury for Walker. Third-round pick Xavier Watts was limited to individual drills on Friday. Watts has received some reps with the first-team defense, so hopefully he can get back out there next week. On Saturday, the Falcons signed veteran defensive back Grayland Arnold and released offensive tackle Kilian Zierer in a corresponding move. Florida QB DJ Lagway practices for first time in camp while recovering from calf injury

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida quarterback DJ Lagway practiced Saturday for the first time since camp opened, a sign of progress for the highly touted and oft-injured sophomore. Lagway is dealing with a strained calf and was expected to take limited practice reps. He wore a sleeve on his left leg, the same one that caused him to miss a game and a half last season. He strained a hamstring against rival Georgia and missed the following week's game at Texas. Coach Billy Napier has offered no timetable on his star player's return. It's the latest injury issue for Lagway, who missed spring practice with a shoulder injury after undergoing sports hernia surgery. The Gators opened training camp Wednesday. Napier, unlike in previous years, closed viewing periods to media for the first three days. Lagway, who went 6-1 in seven starts as a freshman in 2024, is widely considered a Heisman Trophy contender heading into this season. But he's barely been on the field at a time when he could be making significant strides. He was limited during spring practice because of the right shoulder injury that could eventually need surgery. He resumed throwing in late April and said earlier this month at Southeastern Conference media days he would fully participate in camp. But then he strained a calf muscle while running with the team last week. Lagway completed 60% of his passes for 1,915 yards, with 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 2024. He took over the starting role after Graham Mertz tore a knee ligament at Tennessee in October. Behind Lagway are journeyman Harrison Bailey and sophomore Aidan Warner. Bailey played at Tennessee, UNLV and Louisville before transferring to Florida earlier this year. Warner subbed for Lagway last year and was mostly ineffective.
