Rickie & Jordan didn't get a sponsor invite to the Arnold Palmer Invitational. So who did?
There's been so much discussion over who didn't get an exemption into the Arnold Palmer Invitational – namely Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth – that those who did have been all but forgotten.
The Arnold Palmer Invitational is granted four sponsor invites plus a fifth is granted for a participant in the Arnold Palmer Cup, which is voted on by the competitors in the annual Ryder Cup-style team event. That went to Auburn sophomore Jackson Koivun.
The API sponsor exemption committee chose to give its four spots to Rafael Campos, ranked No. 186 in the world, who won the Bermuda Championship last season and wrote an impassioned letter to tournament organizers; Mackenzie Hughes, who narrowly missed out on the top-50 automatic qualifiers last season (No. 52) and is ranked No. 67 in the world; Min Woo Lee, an up-and-coming pro from Australia ranked 55th in the world and who represented the international team at the Presidents Cup last year and has a large social media following; and former U.S. Open champion Justin Rose, who has been a mainstay of the tournament and longtime ambassador of MasterCard, the presenting sponsor of the tournament. At No. 36 in the world, Rose had the best ranking of all the sponsor invites.
To borrow a phrase from tournament sponsor MasterCard, sponsor exemption have become priceless in the age of the $20 million limited field, playing for elevated FedEx Cup points and often no cuts. But sponsor exemptions are given at the prerogative of the tournament for a variety of different reasons. There's often no rhyme or reason, nor does there need to be. Bottom line: Fowler and Spieth had numerous chances to qualify but due to poor play, injury and newborn babies for both to care for, they didn't get the job done and were left with only one last avenue into the tournament via a sponsor exemption and didn't get the call this time. Sam Saunders, the grandson of Arnold Palmer, discussed the exemption process in great detail here last week.
Spieth shared his disappointment at being overlooked for a sponsor invite here.
The field of 72 at the signature event are competing for a purse of $20 million. There is a 36-hole cut this week to the top 50 and ties plus any player within 10 shots of the lead.

D1Baseball predicts the winner of Auburn vs. Coastal Carolina in the NCAA Super Regionals
D1Baseball predicts the winner of Auburn vs. Coastal Carolina in the NCAA Super Regionals Auburn baseball will face its toughest competition of the postseason in Coastal Carolina. Here's how D1Baseball sees this series shaking out. Auburn baseball is set to face its toughest competition this postseason when it hosts Coastal Carolina for the NCAA Super Regionals at Plainsman Park. Campus is buzzing as the Tigers are hosting an NCAA Super Regional for the first time in program history, and a record crowd is expected to witness this weekend's action as Auburn officials have added general admission viewing areas to ensure that Plainsman Park will be an electric atmosphere for the appetizer for next week's College World Series. Will the Tigers feed off their home field advantage? Or will Coastal Carolina spoil Auburn's good time? Experts at D1Baseball shared their prediction for this weekend's series, and are split down the middle on how they see this series shaking out. Out of the 11 writers that submitted predictions, six are projecting the Tigers to advance to Omaha while five are siding with the Chanticleers. Both teams will rely heavily on its pitching staffs to combat the strong sticks that will be on display this weekend. Seven of Auburn's top lineup pieces are hitting over .300 entering the series. The top three batters in Auburn's lineup: Ike Irish, Cooper McMurray, and Chris Rembert, have over 70 hits and double-digit home run totals. Coastal boasts comparable stats with six batters hitting .300 or better, with Blake Barthol and Sebastian Alexander creating the most problems for opposing pitchers. Not only does are the duo hitting above .300, but they have over 10 home runs each and have stolen over 12 bases. Alexander leads the team, as well as the Sun Belt Conference, with 27 swiped bags. Both Tigers and Chanticleers will throw their top pitchers in game one: Cameron Flukey for Coastal Carolina and Sam Dutton for Auburn. Both aces have seven wins on the year and own over 90 strikeouts. Flukey struck out nine batters in last Friday's Conway Regional opener against Fairfield over seven innings, where he allowed two runs on three hits. As for Dutton, he struck out three batters and allowed five runs on seven hits in Auburn's 8-5 win over Stetson in the winner's bracket game last Saturday. Game one between Auburn and Coastal Carolina begins at 8 p.m. CT and can be seen live on ESPN2. What anonymous coaches are saying about Auburn ahead of the NCAA Super Regionals
What anonymous coaches are saying about Auburn ahead of the NCAA Super Regionals Auburn baseball has made quite an impression this season according to several college baseball coaches. The vibes surrounding the Auburn Tigers ahead of this weekend's super regional are high. From fan support to national media, many are singing the Tigers' praises after the program made a turn from missing the postseason last year to being two wins away from its third College World Series appearance since 2019. Among those that are aboard the Auburn hype train are college coaches around the country. Select coaches, who wished to remain anonymous, shared their thoughts on the Tigers with D1Baseball ahead of this weekend's Super Regionals. One coach spoke on the team's chemistry and the pitching staff's ability to mix pitches to their advantage. 'Auburn is a connected team. Their entire team, their dugout, they are one connected unit. Pitching-wise, they throw a ton of strikes and they can mix both ahead in the count and behind in the count.' Another coach complimented the team's mix of older, mature players and young studs who are contributing at a high level early in their career. One particular Auburn infielder caught the attention of one coach, who credited him for being a hard out. 'They have the perfect mix of older and just aggressive, not scared freshmen. Just super talented. (Eric) Snow gives them good at-bats. I feel like the guy never swings and misses.' Auburn's game one starter, Sam Dutton, has become one of the SEC's top arms since transferring to Auburn last offseason. After struggling to find a place within LSU's rotation, he became Auburn's Friday night ace and has produced quality numbers on the mound: 3.84 ERA with 92 strikeouts with an OBA of .336 in 82 innings with a 7-3 record. One coach broke down what makes him a special arm and how an "early outing" in a game brought a sigh of relief. '(Samuel Dutton) is a mix artist. He's a pitcher. He's going to throw a bunch of different pitches at you in all different counts. You can't just sit on one pitch with him. It cannot happen. He threw versus us in a short stint, and literally, we weren't even close. And then they didn't put him back out there and I'm like 'thank God they took him out.' He was electric. He was phenomenal. He carved us up about as bad as anybody.' Auburn baseball will look to keep its hot streak going this weekend against Coastal Carolina in the Auburn Super Regional. First pitch of game one is set for 8 p.m. CT, with game two getting underway at 2 p.m. CT. Both games will air on ESPN2. Details for the "if necessary" game three will be revealed at a later time.
