
Hong Kong unveils 9 ‘hotspot projects' featuring brands, 4 peaks to draw tourists

Deputy Chief Secretary Warner Cheuk Wing-hing, who chairs the Working Group on Developing Tourist Hotspots, unveiled the list of projects on Tuesday after six months of preparation, saying the destinations were filled with Hong Kong characteristics and featured new experiences.
'All these projects have something in common. They have Hong Kong characteristics, they are novel, feature new experiences and are highly photogenic,' he said.
The projects had incorporated tourists' different tastes and would be easy to integrate into different travel routes, which would not only allow visitors to have more fun but also bring about greater economic benefits to the city, Cheuk said.
'In addition to creating new attractions, we should integrate and enrich existing tourism resources, transforming them into highly appealing hotspots that visitors will genuinely regret missing,' he said.

At least four brands – food seasoning company Lee Kum Kee, bakery giant Kee Wah, vinegar maker Pat Chun and probiotic drink company Yakult – confirmed that they would organise tours with travel agencies starting from the third quarter this year.

As China turns away from Canadian canola, Australia emerges as an alternative supplier
Canada's status as the dominant supplier of canola to China appears to be under threat as shipments plunge amid a tit-for-tat tariff battle between the two nations. And Australia is already emerging as an alternative source of the staple vegetable oil, analysts and industry insiders say. China's imports of canola from Canada fell by 55 per cent year on year to 173,250 tonnes in July – the lowest level recorded since July 2023 – Chinese customs data showed. The value of those shipments was down 49 per cent year on year at US$102.06 million. The plummet in Chinese demand follows Beijing's decision to impose steep tariffs on Canadian agricultural products in March – including a 100 per cent levy on canola – in response to Ottawa placing high duties on Chinese electric vehicles. Canada was previously China's top source of imported canola, supplying all of China's imports of the crop in 2023 and 2024, according to official data. But China now appears to be exploring alternatives. Official figures have not yet been released for last month's canola trade between China and Australia, but sources in the Australian grain industry told the Post that China was already making purchases. 'China is buying canola from Australia, as a trial shipment, in the vicinity of 50,000 tonnes,' an industry source said on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the topic.

Hong Kong's stock rally still has room to run on ‘reasonable' valuations, Templeton says
Hong Kong stocks remain favourable, as attractive valuations and easing tariff uncertainty have enhanced the predictability of corporate earnings on the city's stock market, according to US fund manager Franklin Templeton. Advertisement The firm, which manages US$1.5 trillion of assets worldwide, was 'constructive' on Hong Kong and mainland China's stock markets, as the valuations remained reasonable and Beijing had introduced supportive policies, said Ferdinand Cheuk, portfolio manager at Templeton Global Equity Group, on Wednesday in a briefing. While the city's benchmark Hang Seng Index had surged more than 25 per cent so far this year, outperforming major indices globally, the momentum could be maintained through stock selection and positioning in certain sectors, he said. The average price-to-earnings ratio among Hong Kong stocks stood at around 10.8 times, slightly above the 10-year average of 10.4 times, Cheuk said. By comparison, the constituents of the Standard & Poor's 500 index traded at an average of 25 times, while Nasdaq stocks averaged 35 times, according to Bloomberg's data.
