The sea is turning red! Researchers make breakthrough discovery that could help forecast dangerous algae blooms

Scientists might soon be able to forecast when the see is gonna turn red - and don't worry, it has nothing to do with the apocalypse.
For the first time, researchers identified nearly a dozen viruses associated with red tides off Florida's coast that are harmful and costly.
Also known as harmful algae blooms, red tides — the massive growth of algae that is tied to multiple organisms — are driven by wind and water currents, nutrients that run into the water, extreme weather events and unusually high temperatures.
They can kill birds, fish and other sea creatures and lead to health problems in humans, including shortness of breath and even death. Blooms can force health authorities to close beaches.
'We know that viruses play an important role in the dynamics of harmful algal blooms, but we haven't known what viruses might be associated with Karenia brevis blooms,' Jean Lim, a postdoctoral researcher at the USF College of Marine Science, said in a statement. 'Now that we've identified several viruses in red tide blooms, we can work to determine which viruses might have an influence on these events.'
Identifying the viruses can help forecast when the blooms occur and better understand what causes them to stop.
Red tide is a type of naturally occurring algae bloom that impacts the Sunshine State nearly every year: generally cropping up in the late summer or early fall, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, which was a partner of the research.
Lasting usually for between three and five months, they can result in losses estimated at millions of dollars and affect hundreds of square miles. A swath stretching more than 200 miles impacted areas from Tampa Bay to Key West last month, according to WUSF, and Argentina saw beaches turn a shocking crimson at around the same time.
Karenia brevis is the organism that causes red tide.
During red tide events, the researchers collected Karenia brevis bloom samples to analyze in a lab. They used a method called viral metagenomics, a process that determines the make-up of the sample's DNA, to find the viruses.
They don't yet know how the viruses they found influence red tide blooms, but researchers say that because viruses target certain organisms, specific viruses may only infect Karenia brevis.
The researchers are working to determine whether the viruses have an influence on that organism or others in red tide blooms. Finding a potential link between how blooms occur and the presence of viruses could help to predict these events in the future.
'For example, an increase in the number of viruses found in a sample might suggest that a red tide bloom is about to begin, or that it is going to end,' Lim, who is the lead author of the research published in the American Society for Microbiology's journal mSphere, explained.

What they're saying "We do high-level necropsies to determine why they died that goes to the conservation benefits and conservation action plans. So, the information we get is fed to managers and they use that to maybe make new conservation laws or to understand what's going on with the population out there," Garrett said. "Both [manatees and dolphins] live near humans. There's a human impact on them. We have issues with watercraft interactions. We have issues of entanglements from fishing gear and discarded trash. We have habitat issues. For manatees, sometimes there's seagrass that goes and dies off and manatees will starve to death, or dolphins will have issues, red tide issues also. So, those are all the things we're investigating and the cause of death determinations we get help feed into that understanding," he said. What's next The facility is growing from 2,400 square feet to 10,000 between two buildings. They'll have a bigger hold room for the animals, a conference area for trainings and meetings, bigger offices and an observation area for people training to watch the procedures. They'll also have more parking and space to store all of their equipment. The project is about $18 million, and the funding for the facility comes from the federal Gulf Environmental Benefit Fund started after the BP Oil Spill. The land is from the college. One of their main draws to the college is marine science. Having us as a state facility with marine biology right here on campus is a real benefit to them, so it's been a long-standing partnership and we're real thankful for that," Garrett said. Garrett volunteered at the lab while he attended Eckerd. "It's very exciting for me. I've spent my entire career with FWC. I'm graduating from Eckerd and starting at the lab right after I got my degree. It's real special for me. It's definitely a legacy project for me to be able to take what I got to start out with and make it better with this new facility that will hopefully last another several decades," he said. The project is currently in the permitting stage. Garrett said they hope to break ground next spring. If everything goes according to plan, he said it should take a year or two to build. Tegus are like a cross between an iguana, a snake and a lizard, and people are seeing them more often near Palm Beach County. The invasive Argentine black and white tegu has 'reproducing populations' in Hillsborough, Miami-Dade and Charlotte counties, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Scientists also discovered an 'emerging population' in St. Lucie County. Tegus in other Florida counties are likely there because they are escaped or released pets. Still, the lizards have been spotted crawling around Palm Beach County for more than a decade, said Amy Kight, executive director of Busch Wildlife Sanctuary in Jupiter Farms. She gets calls about tegu sightings around canal banks at least once a year. 'I have a feeling people see them more, but just don't know what they are looking at,' wrote Kight in a prepared statement. 'They come from all over the place. Argentine black and white tegus are not native to Florida, but to South America: Brazil, Paraguay, eastern Uruguay and northern Argentina. The omnivores are only protected by anti-cruelty laws in Florida and can be humanely killed on private property with permission from the landowner, according to FWC. They can also be captured and humanely killed without a permit or hunting license on 32 Commission-managed lands in South Florida. The lizards can reach nearly 5 feet long and live up to 20 years. They lay about 35 eggs each year. They have a dotted black-and-white pattern along their backs and tails. While they are climbers, they rarely reach more than a few feet off the ground. Tegus are also strong swimmers. They hibernate during the winter months. In South Florida, they emerge from their burrows in February, just in time for breeding in spring. Tegus can be dangerous if people try to catch them, but they are not considered aggressive. They don't typically chase people and attack them if left unprovoked, Kight said. However, they are known as egg-eaters and can disrupt Florida wildlife. They may eat American alligator eggs and gopher tortoise hatchlings. Those who find tegus should not try to catch the tegu themselves. Instead, take a picture of it and call FWC, which has a wildlife alert hotline at 888-404-FWCC (888-404-3922). FWC also encourages people to report tegu sightings to its exotic species hotline at 888-Ive-Got1 (888-483-4681). Tegus are a prohibited species in Florida and cannot be kept without a permit from FWC. People who have tegus as pets can surrender them without penalties through FWC's exotic pet amnesty program. New chief executive to helm Science Centre Board

SINGAPORE – A long-term Ministry of Education (MOE) staff member will become chief executive of the Science Centre Board on July 1, a step up from her current role as the board's deputy CEO. In a statement on June 2, Science Centre Singapore said Ms Tham Mun See, 55, succeeds Dr Lim Tit Meng, who will step down on June 30 'to pursue other interests'. Dr Lim has helmed the Science Centre Board since 2010. Under his stewardship, the learning of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (Stem) was made accessible to all ages, the statement said. During his tenure, Science Centre Singapore rolled out a variety of initiatives, including the Centre of Research and Applied Learning in Science, which mentored students conducting science and engineering research projects. The 65-year-old also kick-started a partnership with SG Enable, making it easier for people with disabilities to access various exhibits at the Science Centre. In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, he led the Science Centre's pivot to live-streaming videos of science demonstrations, which reached about 170,000 students from more than 300 schools. The statement added that Dr Lim had overseen the development of the new Science Centre, which will be located in the Jurong Lake District, and is expected to open by the end of 2027. Expressing his appreciation, Education Minister Desmond Lee said: 'Dr Lim Tit Meng has played a key role in making Science Centre Singapore an important hub for science education in Singapore. 'Through various initiatives, he has brought Stem learning out of classrooms, and inspired students to apply scientific solutions to real-world problems.' Besides his achievements as CEO, the associate professor at the National University of Singapore's Department of Biological Sciences also held leadership roles in various scientific organisations. He was president of the Singapore Association for the Advancement of Science from 2011 to 2025, the Singapore National Academy of Science from 2019 to 2025, and the Asia Pacific Network of Science and Technology Centres from 2016 to 2024. Dr Lim also sat on the board of the US Association of Science and Technology Centres from 2013 to 2018, and expanded the scope of the Science Centre's business arm, which has secured international collaborations with Sarawak in Malaysia and Kazakhstan. His successor, Ms Tham, has held multiple leadership roles at MOE. These include executive director of the Academy of Singapore Teachers, as well as principal of Raffles Girls' School and Anderson Secondary School. On her appointment, Mr Lee said: 'I look forward to working with Ms Tham Mun See on the development of the new Science Centre, to continue to spark curiosity and nurture creativity through Stem education, and inspire future generations of scientists and innovators.'
