Trump Says Xi Jinping Assured Him China Will Not Invade Taiwan During His Presidency

US President Donald Trump on Friday claimed that Chinese President Xi Jinping assured him Taiwan would not face an invasion during his presidency. In an interview with Fox News, Trump said he did not expect China to take any action against Taiwan while he remained in office. "I will tell you, you know, you have a very similar thing with President Xi of China and Taiwan, but I don't believe there's any way it's going to happen as long as I'm here. We'll see," Trump remarked. According to Trump, Xi told him directly: 'I will never do it as long as you're president.' China Reacts To Trump's Remark Following Trump's remarks, the Chinese Embassy in Washington, in a statement issued Friday, called Taiwan 'the most important and sensitive issue' in U.S.-China relations. It urged the United States to adhere to the one-China principle, stressing that Washington should 'handle Taiwan-related matters with caution' and work to maintain stability in the Taiwan Strait as well as the broader U.S.-China relationship. Taiwan Detects Chinese Aircraft, Naval Vessels Near Its Territory Taiwan's Ministry of National Defence (MND) reported increased Chinese military activity near the island. By 6 a.m. local time on Saturday, the MND said it had tracked 21 Chinese military aircraft and seven naval vessels operating in the vicinity of Taiwan. According to the ministry, 13 of those aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and entered the island's northern and southwestern Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ). In a post on X, the MND stated: "21 sorties of PLA aircraft and 7 PLAN vessels operating around Taiwan were detected up until 6 a.m. (UTC+8) today. 13 out of 21 sorties crossed the median line and entered Taiwan's northern and southwestern ADIZ. We have monitored the situation and responded accordingly." Just a day earlier, on Friday, Taiwan had also reported the presence of seven Chinese aircraft and two naval vessels near its territory. China On Taiwan China considers Taiwan a part of its territory and has vowed to 'reunify' the self-ruled, democratic island, even by force if required. Taiwan, however, firmly rejects Beijing's sovereignty claims. ALSO READ: Putin's Diplomatic Win: Alaska Summit Fails To Halt Ukraine War, Sets Stage For Zelensky-Trump Talks

'China Very Patient, Xi Won't Invade Taiwan During My Presidency': Trump

US President Donald Trump on Friday said that Chinese President Xi Jinping told him that he would not invade Taiwan as long as Trump is president, per a report by Reuters. Speaking at an interview with Fox News, he said, "I will tell you, you know, you have a very similar thing with President Xi of China and Taiwan, but I don't believe there's any way it's going to happen as long as I'm here. We'll see." Trump added, "He told me, 'I will never do it as long as you're president.' President Xi told me that, and I said, 'Well, I appreciate that,' but he also said, 'But I am very patient, and China is very patient,'" Trump added. The two leaders held their first confirmed call of Trump's second presidential term in June. Trump also mentioned in April that Xi had called him but did not specify when that call took place. China considers Taiwan to be its own territory and has vowed to "reunify" with the democratic and separately governed island, by force if necessary.. However, Taiwan strongly objects to China's sovereignty claims. It is noteworthy that although the US is the primary arms supplier and international backer for Taiwan, the two countries have no formal diplomatic ties. The Chinese Embassy in Washington on Friday said that the topic of Taiwan is the "most important and sensitive issue" in China-US relations. "The US govt should adhere to the one-China principle and the three US-China joint communiqués, handle Taiwan-related issues prudently, and earnestly safeguard China-US relations and peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait," embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu said in a statement.

Trump Says Xi Jinping Assured Him China Would Not Invade Taiwan During His Presidency

Last Updated: The US President said Xi Jinping assured him China wouldn't invade Taiwan during Trump's term. US President Donald Trump said that Chinese President Xi Jinping personally assured him China would not launch an invasion of Taiwan while Trump is in office. Speaking to Fox News, Donald Trump recalled a conversation in which Xi Jinping promised restraint. The US President said, 'He told me, 'I will never do it as long as you're president.'. I appreciate that. But he also said, 'I am very patient and China is very patient.'" Donald Trump noted the assurance came during a phone call in June- the first confirmed conversation between the two leaders since Donald Trump began his second term in the White House. He had also previously mentioned another call in April, without providing details. China considers Taiwan a breakaway province and has vowed to bring it under its control, by force if necessary. Taiwan rejects Beijing's sovereignty claims and says only its people can decide their future. Responding to questions, the Chinese Embassy in Washington reiterated that Taiwan remains 'the most important and sensitive issue" in US-China relations. Embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu urged the US to adhere to the one-China principle, manage Taiwan-related matters prudently, and safeguard stability across the Taiwan Strait. Although the US is Taiwan's primary arms supplier and political backer, it does not maintain formal diplomatic relations with the island. Taiwan's government has yet to comment on Trump's remarks. However, Wang Ting-yu, a senior lawmaker from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, wrote on Facebook that while Taiwan welcomes support from allies, 'security cannot rely on the enemy's promise, nor solely on the help from friends. Strengthening our own defence capability is fundamental." view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
