DEWA commissions over 900 11 kV distribution substations
The construction and associated works involved 654,456.30 man-hours, all completed under stringent quality, efficiency and safety standards. Al Tayer stressed that the achievement reflects DEWA's commitment to strengthen Dubai's infrastructure to meet growing electricity demand driven by rapid urban, population and economic growth.
"Given that investment in infrastructure is the primary driver of the economy and comprehensive development, we are committed to strengthening the pioneering model established by DEWA in building advanced and comprehensive infrastructure that contributes to achieving the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 and the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan.
"Thanks to the directives of the wise leadership and the adoption of innovation, sustainability, the latest technologies, research and sound scientific planning, the quality and competitiveness of our infrastructure have become among the best in the world, with DEWA ranked first globally in 12 KPIs within its areas of work,' said Al Tayer.
"In 2024, DEWA recorded the world's lowest electricity transmission and distribution network losses at just 2%, compared to 6%-7% in Europe and the US. DEWA also set a world record for the lowest customer minutes lost, achieving just 0.94 minutes per year, compared to an average of 15 minutes across the European Union,' added Al Tayer.
Rashid Bin Humaidan, Executive Vice President of Distribution Power at DEWA, said there were now 62 33 kV substations and 64,084 medium voltage (11 kV and 6.6 kV) substations in service.

Dubai expands water supply with one of the world's largest desalination plants
HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), inspected progress on the first phase of the sea water desalination plant project in the Hassyan complex, being implemented with a production capacity of 180 million imperial gallons per day, under the Independent Water Producer (IWP) model. The project has achieved about 78% completion and is scheduled for full completion in Q1 2027. It is part of DEWA's strategy to increase Dubai's water desalination capacity. The Hassyan plant is one of the world's largest sea water reverse osmosis (RO) projects, and DEWA's first IWP project, with investments reaching AED 3.377 billion. HE Al Tayer was accompanied during the tour by Waleed Bin Salman, Executive Vice President for Business Development and Excellence, along with a number of senior officials and engineers from DEWA. HE Al Tayer affirmed that the project embodies the vision and directives of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to provide an advanced and integrated infrastructure for energy and water that keeps pace with Dubai's rapid growth and meets the increasing demand for electricity and water services, in line with sustainable development plans. HE Al Tayer visited various sections of the project, which represents a key pillar in supporting the smart infrastructure for desalinated water and advancing the objectives of the Integrated Water Resources Management Strategy 2030. Officials from Hassyan Water Company A provided detailed presentations and briefings on the project's progress. DEWA is building desalination plants based on seawater reverse osmosis technology. By 2030, DEWA will add 240 million imperial gallons per day to its desalination capacity using seawater reverse osmosis, bringing the total desalinated water production capacity to 735 million imperial gallons per day. DEWA aims to produce 100% of desalinated water using a mix of clean energy and waste heat by 2030.

Emiratis living in Hatta to get retail spaces in Sustainable Waterfalls project free of charge for a year
Under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, the Supreme Committee for the Development of Hatta has launched 14 new investment and commercial opportunities at the Hatta Sustainable Waterfalls project. These opportunities, offered through Dubai Municipality, aim to empower local citizens, creating job opportunities, and supporting sustainable economic and social development in the region. All retail spaces at the Hatta Sustainable Waterfalls will be allocated to Emiratis residing in Hatta, free of charge, for a one-year period — providing a springboard for small businesses and productive families to grow within one of the UAE's most scenic and culturally rich destinations. The initiative supports the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, the Hatta Development Master Plan, and the objectives of the Supreme Committee for the Development of Hatta by creating investment opportunities for citizens. It also supports both the Dubai Social Agenda 33 and the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, which aim to position Dubai among the world's top three cities for tourism, while fostering inclusive economic development and environmental sustainability. Spanning a total area of 750 square metres, the new investment opportunities include: four restaurants, four retail stores and six food and beverage kiosks. The spaces will offer a variety of experiences including Emirati, Arabic, Western, and traditional cuisine, as well as local cafes, equipment rentals, and souvenir and gift shops. These projects aim to stimulate tourism, support local culture, and promote economic self-sufficiency for Hatta residents. Bader Anwahi, CEO of the Public Facilities Agency at Dubai Municipality, said, 'For the first time, investment and commercial opportunities are being introduced in the Hatta Dam area, specifically at the Sustainable Waterfalls. The initiative creates a supportive business environment that generates unique job opportunities for citizens, fosters new projects, and enables productive families and residents to expand their small businesses. The Hatta Sustainable Waterfalls is a major tourist attraction within the Hatta Dam area. It features cascading water from the upper dam of the Hatta Hydroelectric Plant flowing over a mosaic mural — the largest of its kind in the world — depicting the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum.
