Djeidi Gassama to Rangers transfer was 'under value' as Ligue 1 club pounce on Sheffield Wednesday confusion
Former Sheffield Wednesday coach Chris Powell insists Rangers got Djeidi Gassama for an absolute song thanks to the Owls' financial plight.
Gassama made the move from Hillsborough to Ibrox this summer for just £2.2million. And he's already made a massive contribution which could see that fee repaid almost 20 times over.
The 21-year-old has hit key goals in both of Gers' Champions League qualifiers so far against Panathinaikos and Viktoria Plzen respectively. Only Club Brugge stand between them and the league phase of the competition, which brings £40 million in prize money.
Wednesday are i the grip of a financial crisis with fans desperate for owner Dejphon Chansiri to sell up and relieve the pressure.
Players are being sold to pay the wages and as a result, Powell reckons Gassama went for much, much less than he would have under normal circumstances.
'They've sold a couple of players, under value," he told the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast."Definitely a young boy has gone to Rangers, Gassama, exceptional player, sold to pay the wages. Another player went.
"There's the young goalkeeper, Pierce Charles (also linked with Rangers), I think he is another asset who might go. They've had money from the Premier League, their share. So they've been able to just settle a few debts. But if it's not sold and he's not funding it, how do you carry on?"
As for Charles, the Telegraph claims Rangers and West Ham walked away from a deal.
The Ibrox club reportedly launched a £1million bid along with the Hammers, but bafflingly neither received a response so have moved on.
And that could leave the path clear for Strasbourg, who are interested in doing a deal for the Northern Ireland international.
Meanwhile, Robbie Fraser has opened up on his Ibrox exit.
The defender has joined Neil Lennon's Dunfermline on a three-year deal after spending 16 years with Rangers.
But he admitted a taste of first team football out on loan at Livingston made him want it every week rather than filling out Russell Martin's squad.
He said: 'It's not easy leaving somewhere you've been for so long. Being there that long, it was my home for 16 years. That's a long, long time but I'm at a stage in my career where I've come out of that younger phase. I want to come out and get games, I want to show that I'm more than capable of holding my own.
'Getting that little taster for six months, it's made me real enthusiastic to come out and show who I am and what I can be. I'm at a great place now. Great club, great people in it. Glad to meet some of them so far and I can't wait to get on with the boys now and train on the pitch.'

Premier League champion to be named in Northern Ireland squad for World Cup qualifiers after injury layoff
Liverpool's Conor Bradley is set to be named in Northern Ireland's squad for September's vital World Cup qualifiers away to Luxembourg and Germany despite missing his club's opening Premier League game of the 2025/26 season against Bournemouth due to injury. Northern Ireland boss Michael O'Neill will announce his panel for the September double-header on Thursday and, at this stage, it is understood the plan is that Bradley will be on the list.

Man arrested after Bournemouth footballer reported racist abuse at match
AFC Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo reported being racially abused by a spectator during the opening match against Liverpool. Match referee Anthony Taylor stopped play in the 29th minute on Friday and a man, 47, was ejected from Anfield stadium. A 47-year-old man from Liverpool was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence and has been taken into custody to be interviewed, Merseyside Police said. Semenyo scored twice in the second half to help bring Bournemouth back from two goals down at Anfield before Liverpool went on to eventually win the contest 4-2. Semenyo continued: 'Scoring those two goals felt like speaking the only language that truly matters on the pitch. An anti-discrimination message was read out to the Anfield crowd, and it is understood that police officers went into the referee's room at half-time. The incident came two days after Tottenham Hotspur player Mathys Tel received racist abuse online after missing a penalty in his side's Uefa Super Cup win against Paris Saint-Germain. Liverpool captain van Dijk labelled the reported abuse aimed at Semenyo as a 'disgrace'. He agreed it was symptomatic of a wider problem not restricted to football, but said greater attempts had to be made to change the mindset. Campaigns such as taking the knee and Kick It Out have not been able to eradicate the issue, he added. Van Dijk said: 'What else can we do? Because this is the very odd one (case) that has managed to say something that is obviously a disgrace. 'The only thing we can do is deal with it by dealing with him personally and try to educate the next generation. That is the only way to try and kick it out, in my opinion. 'I can't believe it. These things shouldn't happen but unfortunately it does and it is an absolute disgrace in my eyes. 'First and foremost these things should never happen in the world, not only football. I am happy to say I don't see it happening up until today actually. 'But in general racism is not of this world in my opinion, but if we are to be realistic, unfortunately, it still exists and that is the painful side of it. 'We have to deal with it in the here and now.' 'We take incidents like this very seriously, and in cases like this we will be proactively seeking football banning orders, with the club, against those responsible.' He added: 'There is no place for racism and it is vital that anyone who witnesses such an offence reports it to stewards, or the police, immediately so we can take the necessary action like we did this evening. 'As with all matches, we work very closely with both Liverpool and Everton FC to ensure the safety of the public and the players.' A spokesperson for Liverpool Football Club said it is aware of the allegation of racist abuse and that 'we condemn racism and discrimination in all forms, it has no place in society, or football'. The Football Association said it was 'concerned' about the allegation of racism towards Semenyo and that it would ensure 'appropriate action' would be taken. West Yorkshire Police said a Luton Town supporter was arrested at the match against Bradford City at Valley Parade after an officer saw him making racist gestures at a home player shortly before half time. 'The 51-year-old man was removed from the ground and arrested on suspicion of behaving in a threatening, abusive or disorderly manner likely to cause harassment alarm or distress,' the force said.
